ILLUSION

작가 바스켄 막디키안(Vasken Mardikian,1975~)은 벨기에 앤트워프에서 태어나 네덜란드 마스트리트 음악학교와 예일대학교 미술대학을 졸업하였다. 벨기에 출신으로는 최초로 예일대 특별상을 수상하였으며, 지금까지 총 3회의 개인전을 가진바 있다. Green Hall갤러리, Augustin Dufrasne갤러리, Jack the Pelican갤러리, Envoy갤러리 등의 여러 기획전에 초대되었으며, 현재 뉴욕과 한국을 오가며 활발하게 활동 중이다. 국내에서는 2007년 광주시립미술관의 『HAVEN.EARTH.HUMAN』전에 처음으로 작품을 선보였으며 이번 전시는 국내에서의 첫 번째 개인전이다. ■ 갤러리 포월스

회화에서 나는 사진이나 텔레비전 또는 프린트와 같은 다른 매체가 지닌 특유한 질감과 시각효과를 재생하고자 한다. 포토리얼리즘과는 반대의 접근방식으로, 이미지보다는 재료자체에 중점을 둔다. 때문에 나의 작품은 매체에 관한 '하이퍼리얼리즘'의 한 형태이라고 볼 수 있다. 화면의 추상적인 이미지를 통해 나는 확대, 흐릿함, 픽셀화하기, 색의 세츄레이션(saturation; 색의 포화, 선명함) 등의 시각적 효과를 탐구한다. ● 텔레비전 이미지와 디지털화 과정으로 대변되는 사회에서, 그리고 모든 것이 가장이고 조작이자 허상이고 거짓인 세상에서 나는 손으로 그린 그림처럼 보이지 않는 그림, 바로 ""가짜 오리지널"" 이미지를 창조하는 데 관심을 가져왔다. ● 나는 회화를 통해 사진과 같은 타 매체나 디지털 프린트와 같이 착각될 수 있는 이미지를 만든다. 미세(micro) 화면의 세상으로, 즉 테크놀로지의 산물처럼 보이지만 실제로는 그러한 착각을 일으키는, 조작된 비디오 영상의 이미지를 가장한 회화 속으로 우리는 들어간다. ● 이 모든 것은 전통적인 과정, 즉 평면 위에 물감을 얹는행위를 취한다. 나의 작품은 이러한 과정, 즉 그림을 그리는 행위에 관한 것이다. 왜냐하면 ""모든 것에도 불구하고 그리고자 하는"" 욕망을 여전히 입증하기 때문이다. ■ 바스켄 막디키안

In my paintings, I try to reproduce the textures and visual effects specific to other media, such as photography, television and print. In contrast to photo-realist approaches, I attempt to focus on the medium rather than on the image itself, so my work could be considered as a form of ""hyper-realism"" of the medium. Through these abstract images, I explore visual effects like magnification, fuzziness, pixelization and color saturation. ● Within a society marked by television imagery and digital processes, in a world whereeverything is simulation, manipulation, illusion or fake I have been interested in creating paintings which don't look at all like handmade paintings, but like ""fake original"" images. ● Through painting, I recreate another medium like photography and the illusion of a digital print. We get inside of a micro-pictorial world and inside the painting which is a simulation of a manipulated video projection image, something that looks technological, but is a simple illusion. ● It takes a traditional process, the act of putting paint on a surface. My work is about this process, the action ofpainting because it is still proof of the desire to ""paint in spite of everything."" ■ Vasken MARDIKIAN
