『먼지같은 사랑』이라 이름지어진 정원희의 첫 전시는 의식의 상상된 공간을 통해 인간의 고독과 번뇌,깨우침 을 그리고 있다. 이러한 작업들에서 작가는 작은 알갱이와도 같은 크기의 인물들을 지속적으로 그리고 있으며 그것은 외면상 무한한 범위와 불분명한 공간을 둔 세상을 극적으로 보여준다. ● 동양 종교와 철학에 영향을 받아 작가는 자기 이해와 진리를 표현하고자 특유의 경향과 독특한 색상을 지속적으로 보여준다. 많은 그의 동시대 한국현대 작가들처럼,작가는 궁극적으로 자연과 인간의 관계를 말하고 있는것이다.

그의 회화 작업 중 한 세트로 아무것도 그리지 않은듯한 백색의 긴 직사각형의 캔버스가 있는데 그 표면에 다가가서 관찰할 때에야 아주 작은 두 인물이 캔버스의 끝자락에 나타나 비어있는듯한 배경은 순간 명백하고 광활한 빛의 세계로 변화한다. 이 놀라운 크기의 대조를 통해 작가는 보는이에게 지속적으로 우리인간이 얼마나 작은 존재인가를 환기시킨다.

두 판으로 이루어져 보여질 그의 최신작 중 하나는 월식의 부드럽고 빛나는 빛을 암시하며 창백하고 가늘게 표현된 별의 중앙을 향해 활강하는 연인을 그리고 있다. 표면상 평면적이지만 본질적으로 무한한 이 회화연작이 가진 빛과 깊이감은 어쩌면 그 별로 들어가는 몽상가의 환상들로 보일것이다.

I intend to depict love and life through my artwork. It is my belief that in such effort I would reach the realm of truth. ■ JUNGWONHEE

In his first solo exhibition entitled『A Love like Dust』, Won-hee Jung paints an imagined space of consciousness, in an exploration of human solitude, burden, and illumination. In these works, the artist depicts a series of speck-sized figures, shown soaring through a range of ostensibly infinite,spacially ambiguous worlds. ● Influenced by Eastern theology and mysticism, Jung renders the individual's enduring path towards self-knowledge and truth by means of a simplistic palette. ● Like many of his Korean contemporaries, Jung's work ultimately speaks to that of nature and the human condition. ● In one set of Jung's paintings, an oblong frame displays what seems to be an untouched surface of white. Upon closer inspection, two miniscule figures emerge from the furthest ends of the canvas. The once blank panel is suddenly transformed into a tangible and vast world of light. This astonishing contrast of scale throughout Jung's works continuously remind the viewer of our own diminutive proportions. ● One of Jung's most recent works includes a two-panel display that reveals the soft and incandescent light of a lunar eclipse, while the latter portrays a full pale moon, in which a couple is shown soaring towards the center. Superficially flat yet intrinsically boundless, this set of paintings capture a light and depth, perhaps only known to the illusions of the dreamers within them. ● Like particles of dust, suddenly visible through the light, Jung's unapologetically romantic travelers journey together yet alone, endlessly searching through space. ■ Michiko Mull
