너와 나 / You & Me

이번 전시는 심아빈의 세 번째 개인전으로 회화, 영상, 설치 작품들을 선보인다. 작가는 삶과 현실을 바라보는 자신의 관점을 솔직하면서도 냉소적으로 표현하여 관람객에게 유희와 공감을 불러일으켜 왔다. 심아빈 작품의 핵심은 작품 안에서건 작품과 관람객 사이에서건 그 사이에 관계를 맺어주어 '존재'에 대한 새로운 해석을 하는 것이다. ● 이번 전시에서는 사람들 간의 관계성을 도식화한 작품들이 소개된다. 전시작 대부분은 여러 개의 캔버스들이 모여 하나의 완성된 작품을 이룬다. 이것은 마치 그림책처럼 장면들이 하나하나의 캔버스에 그려져 있는 것 같다. 작품에는 '너'를 상징하는 세모와 '나'를 상징하는 동그라미가 반복적으로 등장한다. 두 개체는 서로 다른 모양을 하고 분리되어 있으면서도 하나의 선으로 연결되어 있고 마치 저울추와 같은 모습으로 서로를 의지하고 있다. 작품 속에서 세모와 동그라미는 보는 관점에 따라 상대가 확대되어 보이거나 축소되어 보이지만, 최종적으로 그 둘은 하나의 선으로 연결되어 있는 대등한 관계임을 드러내며 결말을 낸다. 다른 작품에서는 세모와 동그라미가 결합되어 있는 원뿔을 가지고 '너'가 없다면 '나'는 존재할 수 없음을 역설한다.

심아빈 작품의 간결함과 단순함 속에는 미묘한 긴장감이 맴돈다. 이는 사람들의 관계 안에 시간의 개념을 넣어 일종의 삼각관계를 구현한 'You, Me & Time(너, 나 그리고 시간)'이라는 작품에서 확인할 수 있다. 시간은 마치 새총의 고무줄에 묶인 듯, 혹은 줄다리기를 하는 듯이 팽팽히 사람들의 관계에 묶여 은근한 긴장감을 유발하며 관계의 촉매제 역할을 한다. 사람들의 관계 속에서 유동적이면서 지배적인 시간의 성향이 표현되어 있다.

심아빈의 작품은 미니멀하여 다소 차가워 보이지만 한 편으로는 감성적이기도 하다. 세모가 '너'이고 동그라미가 '나'라는 사실을 인지한다면 누구나 자신과 그 누군가를 각 사물에 대입해 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그렇다면 자연스레 감정이 이입될 것이며 더 이상 세모와 동그라미는 단순한 도형이 아닌 각자의 의미가 부여된 가치 있는 것으로 변화할 것이다. 이처럼 그의 작품은 생각을 전환시켜 새로운 시각으로 '너와 나'를 바라볼 수 있게끔 관람객들을 유도한다. 이는 사람간의 소통에 대한 새로운 방법이 끊임없이 요구되는 이 시대에 그에 대한 적절한 모색이 될 수 있다. 이번 전시에는 상당 부분 다른 사람들과 관계를 맺고 살아가는 인간상을 단순화하여 그 근본을 찾고자 하는 작가의 고찰이 반영되어 있다.

심아빈(1976년 생)은 계원디자인예술대학 영상디자인학과를 졸업한 후, 스코틀랜드 던컨 오브 조단스톤 컬리지 오브 아트 & 디자인에서 타임 베이스드 아트와 일렉트로닉 이매징을 전공해 학사와 석사 학위를 받았다. 2003년 로워 포에 갤러리(스코틀랜드) 그리고 2006년 갤러리 팩토리(한국)에서 개인전을 가졌다. 주요 해외 단체전으로는 2003년 영국 피터버러 미술관과 2004년 던디 컨템포러리 아트에서의 전시가 있고, 비디오 작품 상영 전시로는 백업 인터내셔널 필름 페스티벌(독일), 히로시마 애니메이션 페스티벌(일본) 그리고 허드슨 벨리 컨템포러리 아트 센터(미국)에서 있었다. 2005년에는 일본 삿포로 초대 입주작가 프로그램에 참여하기도 했다. 작가는 현재 서울에 거주하며 작품 활동을 하고 있다. ■ 지와이엠프로젝트

GYM project presents 『You & Me』, a solo exhibition of Ah-Bin Shim that features her new paintings, video and installation works. Shim has expressed her own perspective of a life and a reality through her work in which her ingenuousness and a sarcastic stance manifest, and it arouses sympathy and amusement. Her work consists in creating relationships in order to define a human being and a life in her own translation. ● In this exhibition, Shim presents works picture a people's relationship. Most of the works are made up of a serial of canvas as if each features a scene of a story. A triangle and a circle appear repetitively in the work and each symbolizes 'you' and 'me'. Two different entities are apart but they are connected to each other by a line. This looks two of them depend on one another in making a balance as a scale. One of the works, a series of canvas shows various viewpoints that show once a triangle is exaggeratedly bigger than a circle and vice versa. And in the last two canvases of the series show other viewpoints from the top and the bottom, the two entities seen equal in their relationship. In another work, a sequence of paintings show that a circle becomes a triangle and it regenerated into a circle and it conveys that 'you' and 'me' is the same one. ● Shim delivers a simple message through a concise style of work in which viewers can feel a subtle tension. For instance, the work titled 'You, Me & Time', the artist used an elastic band and a slingshot type of an object to visualize a tension of a relationship between people and time. In the work, time is tied to a slingshot with an elastic band looking as if it plays at a tug of war. This work mirrors the artist's thought that time is fluid but also dominant in people's relationships. ● Shim's work is seen as a Minimal Art and it looks a little cold. But on the other hand her work is sentimental. When viewers become aware of that the triangle is 'you' and the circle is 'me' in the work, they substitute themselves to the each entity while a personal emotion is arousing naturally. Consequently, the triangle and the circle are not just a figure but they transform into things that keep a special quality. Like this, Shim's work induces viewers to a unique perspective of seeing ourselves. This exhibition renders the consideration of the artist for human beings through her works that are simply and determinedly expressed. ● Ah-Bin Shim(b. 1976) studied Film & Video at Kaywon School of Art & Design in Korea and obtained her BFA(in Time Based Art) and MSc(in Electronic Imaging) at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Scotland. She held her first solo exhibition at Lower Foyer Gallery in 2003(Scotland), followed by Gallery Factory in 2006(Korea). She participated in group shows at Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery and Dundee Contemporary Arts. In addition, her video works were screened at Backup International Film Festival in Weimar, Hiroshima Animation Festival in Hiroshima and Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in New York. In 2005, she was a guest artist at the Sapporo artists in residency in Japan. She currently lives and works in Seoul, Korea. ■ GYMproject
