성소 - 축적된 시간이 생성하는 숭고 ● "종교적 인간에게는 공간이 균질하지 않다. 종교적 인간은 공간 내부의 단절과 균열을 경험한다. 공간의 어떤 부분은 다른 부분과 질적인 차이를 보인다. 거기에는 어떤 성스러운 공간, 그러므로 힘이 있고 의미가 깊은 공간이 있고, 다른 한편에는 성스럽지 않은, 따라서 일정한 구조와 일관성이 없는 무형태의 공간이 있는 것이다." - M.엘리아데, 「聖과 俗」가운데 ● 작품 「성소 - 축적된 시간이 생성하는 숭고」는 일상적 공간 가운데 숭고미를 발현하는 공간을 탐색하고 표현하는 작업이다. M. 엘리아데의 주장과 같이 실존적 차원에서 우주의 공간들은 각기 다른 의미를 가지고 한 개인에게 다가온다. 즉 어떠한 공간들은 무의미하고 일상적인 공간임에 반해 어떠한 공간들은 한 개인에게 있어서 자신에게 말을 걸어오는 특별한 공간으로 작용하는 것이다. 작품 「축적된 시간이 생성하는 숭고」는 이처럼 나에게 말을 걸어오는 공간들을 발견하고 이러한 공간들을 사진매체를 통해 담아내고 드러내는 작업이다. 처음 내게 다가온 문제의식은 "나에게 특별한 공간으로 다가오는 대상은 구체적으로 나에게 어떠한 감성을 환기시키는가? 그리고 이러한 감성을 발생시키는 대상이 가지고 특질은 무엇인가?"였다. 나는 이처럼 실존적이고 시각적 무의식 차원의 반응을 야기하는 원인이 무엇인지 사진을 통해 그 실체를 규명하고 파악하고자 하였다.

이와 같은 문제의식을 가지고 "내게 말을 걸어오는 공간"들에 대한 탐색을 계속하면서 나는 나름의 잠정적 결론을 확보할 수 있었다. 즉 내게 특별한 감성을 불러일으키는 공간, 나의 시각적 무의식을 자극시키는 공간들이 환기시키는 구체적인 감성이 바로 숭고함이었으며 이러한 숭고함의 분위기를 발생시키는 원인은 다름 아닌 공간이 담지하고 있는 시간성에 있다는 것이 그 결론이다. ● 유한한 존재인 인간은 시간이 축적된 대상과 조우하게 될 때 자신의 유한성에 대해 자각하게 되며 무한성에 대한 인식의 과정으로 나아가게 된다. 이에 시간을 축적된 공간은 인간에게 자기 존재의 유한성을 깨닫게 하고 자신을 초월하는 존재에 대한 깨달음과 경외심, 즉 숭고함의 감성을 불러일으키게 되는 것이다. 나는 이러한 결론 아래 축적된 시간이 생성하는 숭고미를 표현하기 위한 적합한 시각적 대상을 탐색하였고, 담쟁이 넝쿨을 그 피사체로 선택하였다. 담쟁이 넝쿨은 시간의 축적과 함께 상승의 이미지를 형성한다. 담쟁이 넝쿨은 겹겹이 쌓여가는 시간을 딛고 상승하여 초월로 향하는 형상을 드러냄으로 숭고의 감성을 드러내기에 적합한 피사체로 작용하는 것이다. ● 작품「성소-축적된 시간이 생성하는 숭고」는 이처럼 시간의 담지자로서의 담쟁이 넝쿨이 시각적으로 구현해내는 숭고의 감성을 빛의 그림으로 그려내려 했던 나의 순례의 기록이라 고백할 수 있을 것이다. ■ 신용준

The Sublime by The Time ● "For religious man, space is not homogeneous; he experiences interruptions, breaks in it; some parts of' space are qualitatively different from others…There is, then, a sacred space, and hence a strong, significant space; there are other spaces that are not sacred and so are without structure or consistency, amorphous...("Mircea Eliade: The Sacred & The Profane) ● This work, The Sublime by The Time aims to explore and present the place revealing out the sublime among those very routine places. In existential realm, every single place in our universe comes to each individual's mind with very different meaning-as M. Eliade said above. It means, while some places are routine without any meaning, but the others have impact as a special place to someone with a 'calling'. Likewise, this work collection The Sublime by The Time delivers the discoveries and representations of those places calling me through the frame of photography. The very first fundamental motive of this work is, "What specific emotion is brought by those subjects coming to me special? And which feature and essence of those subjects draws out the emotion?". Thus I tried to pursue the true nature of those emotion and set the purpose of this work to light the reason of those existential, visually unconscious response. ● All the way of following this fundamental motive, continuing to inspect 'those places calling me', I has arrived into a provisional answer for questions. That is, the specific emotion brought by those places coming with special emotion is the sublime by the accumulated time which those places embodied within. ● As the mortal, human realize his own mortality when he encounters the time-accumulated subject then he goes into further realization of immortality through this experience. In here, the time-accumulated place impacts on human mind to realize his own mortality. Then it brings the emotions of awareness, awe-the sublime from the transcendent. Settled onto this conclusion, I inspected the appropriate visual subjects to represent sublime created from the accumulated time then picked out the ivy. The ivy, along to accumulation of time, its climbing stems shape the image of the ascension. It symbolizes the sublime by representing shape of climbing toward and seeking the transcendent very aptly. ● In this work, Sanctum-The Sublime by The Time, the ivy revealed out visually the emotion of sublime by its embodying of the time. And that is the sublime I encountered and tried to draw into picture of light. Thus, this exhibition, Sanctum-The Sublime by The Time is the confession of my pilgrimage to seek the answer through photography so far as. ■ SHINYONGJUN
