The Precious Message ● 작가 김은옥은 자신의 오리지널리티를 찾아가는 과정을 지금까지의 작업에서 보여주어 왔는데 이 과정에서 한국적이고 여성적인 상징물로서 보자기라는 모티브를 발견하고 이 보자기에 담긴 상징적 요소 위에 작가 자신의 내면적인 것들을 담아내면서 이를 소통도구로 삼아 자신의 작업 담론을 드러내고자 하는 일관된 조형작업을 해왔다.

보자기는 본래 물건을 전달하거나 보관하기 위한 실용적인 도구였다. 그러나 보자기는 단순한 도구에 그치지 않고 종교적 염원과 바램을 위한 주술적 도구이자 예절과 격식을 갖추기 위한 의례용 도구 이기도 했다. 보자기에는 그 천 위에 '福'이나'壽'와 같은 글을 넣어 행복과 장수를 비는 주술적인 소망을 담기도 하고 십장생, 용, 봉황 등과 같은 품위와 격 그리고 멋을 위한 소재로 여러 가지 색채와 문양으로 넣기도 하였다. 그러므로 보자기 그 자체가 기호와 상징 그리고 색채와 장식으로 구성된 예술품이자 주술적 도구이며 예를 갖춘 특별한 커뮤니케이션의 도구이기도 하였던 것이다.

작가 김은옥은 이 도구를 다시 자신의 조형적 언어를 전달하는 매개체의 하나로 선택하여 관객과의 대화를 시도 하고자 한다. 보자기에는 여러 가지 종류가 있지만 한국의 전통문양이 새겨진 보자기를 보면 한국인의 핏줄을 타고 내려오는 그 어떤 전통적인 것들을 환기시키는 듯한 상징들을 읽을 수 있게 되기도 하고 다른 한편 어머니가 자식에게 전해주었던 보자기처럼 장식적이지 않은 보자기에서도 글이나 말로는 전달할 수 없는 그 어떤 무언의 메시지가 담겨 있는 듯 한 느낌을 받게 되기도 한다. 그런 의미에서 보자기는 하나의 사물이 아니라 언어와는 다른 차원의 이미지적 소통 도구이며 예(禮) 와 혼(魂) 그리고 정(情)과 같은 말로 표현하기 힘든 지극히 한국적인 메시지를 전달할 수 있는 특별한 매개적 이미지로 보여진다.

그러므로 김은옥의 작업에서 보여지는 화려하게 장식되거나 정성스럽게 매듭지어 감싸져 있는 보자기에는 보자기라는 도구에 싸여 있음으로 인해 사물들이 감추어져 그 보자기 속의 사물이 무엇인지는 알 수 없지만 "The Precious Message"라는 작품 명제에서 말하듯 포장된 도구의 특별한 장식성으로 인해 이미 소중한 메시지들이며 특별한 전언일 것으로 읽혀지게 만들고 있다.

그리고 작가는 자신이 표현하는 보자기에 담겨있는 메시지에 대한 의미를 부각시키기 위해 극사실적인 표현으로 보자기 자체가 갖고 있는 문양에 시선을 가져가게 하기도 하고 여타 장신구와의 컴퍼지션을 조절하고 작품 속의 사물에 대한 시선을 다양한 위치로 변화시키는 것을 통해 작가의 시각 방식을 제시하면서 관조적 거리 두기를 하거나 혹은 다른 시선으로 이 전통적인 사물에 대해 바라볼 수 있도록 관점을 제시하기도 한다. 이것은 그의 작업에서 배경공간을 화려하게 빛나게 하거나 어두운 공간 속에 두어 보자기에 주목시키고 그 이미지 읽기의 문맥을 바뀌도록 하여 보자기 자체 이미지가 담고 있는 네러티브 뿐만 아니라 그 이면에 담겨있는 메시지와도 마주치도록 유도한 시각적 장치를 만들어 내는 방식과도 유사하다.

작가는 이러한 시각적 장치들을 통하여 극사실적 묘사로 인해 보자기가 그려진 화폭의 표면에만 머무를 수 있는 시선들이 보자기 이미지 이면에 감추어진 의미의 세계에까지 확장되도록 하고자 하는 것이며 이미지 너머 사유의 영역까지를 작업 속에 담아내고자 하는 것이다. 이것은 사물의 재현에서 오는 감성적인 부분으로부터 시작하여 사색의 공간까지 관객의 시선을 이끌어내고자 하는 조형적 전략으로 일상언어로는 커뮤니케이션 할 수 없는 곳에서 언어가 아닌 다른 채널을 통해 보자기라는 이미지를 기호적인 구조로 만들어 내고 바로 이지점에서 작가의 내적인 시각을 담아 메시지를 전달하고 소통 하고자 하는 것이다. ■ 이승훈

The Precious Message ● The artist, Kim Eun-Ok shows the process to find its originality on her artwork. Pursuing that, she discovers the motif of a cloth-wrapper which contains her inner world as the symbolic element of the work. She has been consistently worked to reveal the discourse of her artwork regarding the cloth-wrapper as the medium of communication. ● A cloth-wrapper was essentially the practical tool to deliver or keep objects. Sometimes, it uses not only the ceremonial medium for taking manners and rules, but also a conjuring instrument for religious faith and wish, not just a simple tool. ● With signifying the meaning as conjuring wish praying for blessing and longevity, it was printed the words of 'Bok' or 'Soo' on the cloth, and expressed various colors and patterns as the elements of dignity, ranks, and styles symbolized for ten longevities, a dragon, and a phoenix. Therefore, a cloth-wrapper itself is an artwork and a conjuring instrument consisting of signs, symbols, colors, and decorations. Above all, it evokes the special means to communication with ceremony. The artist, Kim Eun-Ok tries to talk to the viewers by choosing this medium for delivering her formative language. Even though there are various kinds of cloth-wrapper, it reminds of the symbol of traditional Korean cloth-wrapper printed traditional patterns. On the other hand, it appeals the silent ineffable message by writing or words, as like a plain common cloth-wrapper which mother passes on to her children. ● In this context, a cloth-wrapper is not an object but the means of communication in different dimension beyond language. Specially, it is the peculiar medium which delivers as Korean as the message beyond words through manners, spirit, and sentiments. ● Accordingly, in Kim Eun-ok's artwork, even though it hides the things inside the cloth-wrapper by wrapping of the cloth-wrapper in splendid decoration or earnestly made a knot, it suggests "The Precious Message" as the title of artwork, which is significant to be wrapped the inner message in the artist's sincere mind. ● And the artist draws the eyes on the pattern of the cloth-wrapper in hyper realistic expression, to emphasize the hidden meaning of her cloth-wrapper. Also she suggests the different viewpoint looking at a traditional object with the distance for observation. It is the artist's own viewpoint by controlling the composition with other ornaments, and trying to distribute the viewpoints of objects in her artwork. ● It tries to focus on the cloth-wrapper by arranging the background whether it is splendid or dark on the space, similar to the way making the visual installment to meet with not only its narrative but also the hidden message by shifting the contextual reading. ● In this visual installment, the artist would expand the sight staring at the surface of the cloth-wrapper in hyper realistic way, to put the hidden meaning on the other side of the cloth-wrapper, and to contain the contemplation beyond the images. ● Starting from the sensitive part for representing objects, it captures the viewers' eyes on the space of contemplation as the formative strategy of her artwork. At the point of that, she would create the image of cloth-wrapper as the signal structure, through not words but the channel in different dimension.
