In-Between Distances

스페이스 이노(Space Inno)의 초대전인 주하영의 프로젝트 "In-Between Distances"는 "Home(홈)"이라는 것의 의미가 세대와 지형을 넘나들며 어떻게 변화하고, 발전할 수 있는지를 모색한 것이다. 한 동안 한곳에 정착하지 못하고, 빈번하게 이동을 하며 살았던 그녀에게 "Home(홈)"의 의미는 영국의 학자인 알리슨 블런트(Alison Blunt)가 제시한 것처럼, 어딘가에 속하는 공간이면서 소외된 공간, 친밀하지만 폭력적이고, 간절히 원하지만 두려움이 있는 막연한 "거리"의 공간인지도 모르겠다.

주하영의 작업은 "유랑"을 통해 인간의 삶과 감정, 사람들의 행동양식, 즉, 인간의 신체와 정체성의 관계가 어떻게 변화할 수 있는지에 초점을 맞춘 것이다. 이번 작업은 우연히 방문한 제주도의 한라산에서 촬영한 것으로 예측할 수 없음에 대한 불확실성을 그녀의 심리적, 혹은 사회 문화적 "거리"와 "관계"에 중점을 두고 비디오, 사진, 드로잉 등 혼합매체를 통한 작업으로 보여진다. 이번 전시를 통해 작가는 지정학적 위치나 환경, 혹은 인간의 물리적 이동뿐 아니라 정신적 이동 속에서, 어떠한 곳도 진정한 "홈(Home)"이 될 수는 없는 현실을 보여준다. 단지, 애착(Emotional Attachment)이 가는 감성과 정신의 공간이 있음을 그녀의 시각언어를 통해서 함의할 뿐이다. ■ 주하영

This solo exhibition "In-Between Distances" by Hayoung Joo focuses on the relationship between the body and identity, and is concerned with the process of exploring notions of home in different societies and cultures. The primary motive of In-Between Distances is to show the beginning of the travelling body taking shape, by employing notions of change and control. ● The project In-Between Distances was filmed on Mt. Hala, located in the centre of Jeju Island, Korea. During the journey, the weather changed dramatically and heavy fog hindered sight and it plays in an ambiguous space with the contrast between vagueness and precision. As Alison Blunt suggests, the meaning of home, the idea of home, evokes a sense of place and displacement, belonging and alienation, and of inclusion and exclusion that is closely tied not only to a sense of self but also to a desire for intimacy.( Alison Blunt, Domicile and Diaspora: Anglo-Indian Women and the Spatial Politics of Home (MA, Oxford and Victoria: Blackwell Publishing: 2005), pp. 5-6.) ● However, the notion of home creates a new identity and new displacement through the relationship between distances and differences within travels across borders, cultures and nations. ● In-Between Distances represents the reflection of social, cultural and artistic processes which signify the creation of a newly identified home. Searching for a new notion of home is the main purpose of In-Between Distances which represents the multiple identities of a woman, a Korean and a traveller. ■ JOOHAYOUNG
