실 [shi:l]

우리는 살아가면서 수많은 관계들을 맺고 산다. 사람이 태어나면서부터 맺어가는 수많은 인연의 끈들과 그 안의 관계들, 때로는 엉키고 풀리는 보이지 않는 관계들은 비단, 인간관계 사이에서만은 아니다. 사람과 사물, 꿈과 현실등도 이 보이지 않는 끈을 가지며 나는 그것이 가진 '힘'과 '혼'에 관해 관심을 가져왔다. 나는 그 관계들의 매개체로 실을 통해 엮고 새로운 형태를 만들고 풀어가는 역할을 하면서 동시에 새로운 아우라를 창조한다.

때로는 이러한 관계들은 감정적으로 연결되어 있으며 동물이나 사물과의 관계에서도 예외는 아니다. 어떤 특별한 물건에 담긴 이야기나 회상, 각별한 애정을 가져본 경험이 있거나 동물을 가족처럼 대해본 경험이 있다면 이러한 관계들을 쉽게 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 특히 어린아이들은 우리 주변의 모든 것들이 살아있다고 믿는다. 주변의 사물과 이야기하고 사람과 같이 숨 쉬고 있다고 생각하며, 모든 사물들이 서로 관계되어 있다고 믿는다. 이러한 생각은 비단 아이들에게만 국한되어있지는 않다. 한 예로 오늘날에는 미신이라고 여겨 잊혀졌지만 정한수를 떠놓고 자식들을 위해 빌고, 돌 하나도 쉽게 보지 않았던 우리의 조상들은 주변 모든 것들에 혼이 있다고 믿었다.

나는 이러한 모든 것이 살아있다고 믿는 감성적인 연결고리들을 샤머니즘에 근거한 애니미즘에서 찾았고, 이를 여러 가지 형태로 표현하고 있다. 많은 관계들 속, 보이지 않는 끈들은 실이나 머리카락을 주로 사용하여 표현하고 있고, 사회적 개인적인 연결고리들은 접합된 오브제 형태로 표현했다. 특히 샴쌍둥이와 같이 여러 개의 다리 혹은 머리를 가진 인형들은 인간들이 가진 연결고리의 불완전성을 표현하는 동시에 과거 샤머니즘에서 보여준 초자연적 힘을 가진 존재이기도 하다. ■ 박혜원

People live in relationships that are made up of many ties. These ties snare and entangle them. New ties are continually being formed from the moment that we are born. This applies not just to relationships between people, but also between people and objects, people and animals and dreams and reality. I am interested in these invisible ties and the power that they possess. ● Eastern philosophy gives a great deal of importance to the idea of relationships or connections, be it between a person and an object, an individual to other individuals, or groups of people towards other groups. Sometimes people treat an object that has special memories for them as if it were a human being. When we were children everything was animistic to us; each object seemed to breathe and 'talk.' Everything seemed interconnected with invisible ties. ● In our modern era we have forgotten many of the old traditions of our ancestors. These are now regarded as superstitions. Our ancestors believed that every object had a soul, and that it was important to take care of even something as small as a pebble. I remember that my grandmother, early each morning, would put clean water into a small bowl and pray to it. ● My methods and proposals aim to keep this spirit alive. My artistic practice is, in some ways, quite closely related to animism, which is, in turn, related to the idea of a living soul present in everything around us. I believe that people have invisible ties with many different elements, and when I make my work the physical act of knitting, knotting, and rolling the thread mimics these ideas about human life and relationships. In my artistic practice I act as an artist shaman as I use my spiritual energy to point towards another world. ● The intertwined forms and shapes in my work reflect these relationships. Thread or hair is used to represent the ties; it refers to individual and personal ties; family, gender and society. In Eastern philosophy conjoined shapes are seen to possess amazing powers, and most symbols of spiritual guardians are sexually ambiguous figures. For this reason I have made my models trans-gender. The little figures are to be seen as artistic mediators - possessing spiritual energy and generating their own aura. ■ PARKHYEWON
