Once a New York based artist, Younghui Kim has led a new media platform of wearable art combining physical computing and soft textile. She is currently researching and teaching interactive media art in Seoul. 뉴욕에서 활동해오던 작가 김영희는 피지컬컴퓨팅과 부드러운 섬유를 접목한 웨어러블컴퓨팅이라는 새로운 예술영역을 개척한 작가로 현재 대학에서 후학양성과 함께 작품활동을 해오고 있다. ● 본 전시 「보따리」에서 작가는 우리가 묶고 풀기를 반복하는 '보따리'처럼 평범하게 느껴지는 일상의 사물에 대한 인상을 그녀만의 시각으로 이야기를 하고 있다. 이러한 여러 작품들 중 「머니홀릭」이란 작품은 돈지갑에 테크놀로지를 결합한 작품으로 예술 테크놀로지라는 영역을 잘 표현한 작품이다

김영희_Bottari_보따리_피지컬컴퓨팅, 사운드 설치

Each 「Bottari (Package)」 contains its own story. Bottari is a Korean traditional package that is wrapped with a simple square fabric; depending on its content, it can be a luggage for a long journey, a gift for a loved one, or a storage for precious memory. 「Bottari」 is a physical computing sound installation composed with twenty to thirty Bottaries that are whispering out random poetic words in different voices with red lights but, they complete a sentences together when voices are in synch coincidentally. 보따리는 보자기라는 아주 단순한 네모의 천으로 싸여 있지만 무엇을 싸느냐에 따라 여행길 짐이 될 수도, 주고 받는 선물이 될 수도, 소중한 추억의 보관상자가 될 수도 있다. 이렇게 모든 보따리는 내용물이 있으며 또한 이야기를 담고 있다. 「Bottari」는 사운드 설치로 수십개의 보따리들이 담고있는 각자의 단어들은 붉은 빛과 함께 여러 목소리로 내뱉으면서 우연처럼 서로의 문장을 완성시킨다.

'It's never satisfied with money you fill' Our wallet is a moneyholic that needs to be refill all the time. '채워도 채워도 만족되지 않는다.' 우리들의 지갑은 끊임없이 채워야 하는 「머니홀릭」이다.

「Moneyholic」 wallet is required to be used constantly. Depending on frequency of its uses, different sentences will appear to demand to be used to use and refill money more often. Advertising copy like sentences will appear on the small LCD screen on the wallet. 머니홀릭 지갑은 계속 사용해 주어야 한다. 얼마나 자주 지갑을 여느냐에 따라 문구의 내용이 바뀐다. 소비지향 문화속에서의 광고문구같은 글이 작은 LCD 스크린에 흐른다.

Flowers are not to be cut or touched. They are to be appreciated by just looking. Blooming flowers of blue lights fade out when they are touched. 활짝 핀 푸른 빛의 꽃들은 가까이 다가가면 그 빛이 바랜다.

김영희_당신의 비너스_웨어러블, 비데오 프로젝션

A Perfect look and perfect figure transforms into endless desire in a society where Lookism is rampant. 「Your Venus」 is a simple dress that is partially made of a projectable screen textile. On the surface of the dress, the visual images that express different desires of perfect beautiful body in different time and societies; such as Greek venus torso, bobby doll, corset torso, and more will be projected. 외모지상주의의 사회속에서의 완벽한 모습이란 끝없는 욕망으로 변하는 것이다. 「당신의 비너스」는 스크린프로젝트용 특수자재를 응용하여 제작된 심플한 드레스이다. 드레스표면에는 시대와 문화에 따른 완변한 외모에 대한 인간의 추구를 표현한 영상물이 프로젝션된다. 그리스시대의 비너스 흉상, 코르셋으로 쪼여진 허리, 바비인형의 몸매등과 같은 이미지들이 영상물로 드레스위에 프로젝션된다.

김영희_Performance Wearable Art Body Graffiti version 2.0 Swing Boots

「바디 그래피티」는 댄스나 움직임으로 표현하기 위해 제작된 키네틱 웨어러블 디스플레이 이다. 바디 그래피티(Body Graffiti)는 POV(Persistence of Vision.시각잔상효과) 기술을 이용하여 움직임에 의해 순간적으로 프로그래밍된 글과 그림을 허공에 그래피티로 표현하는 퍼포먼스 웨어러블 테크놀로지 작품이다. 바디그래피티 버전1은 비보이그룹「라스트포원」 댄서들에게 입혀 공연을 하였다. 좀더 업그레이드 된 바디 그래피티 버전2는 여성용 부츠로, 그네를 타는 것을 전제로 디자인, 제작 되었다. 메시지는 프로그래밍으로 바꿔질 수 있으며 두 버전 모두 공공장소에서의 퍼블릭공연 아트를 위해 제작되었다. ■ 김영희
