The Strangers

벡터스페이스의 기획전인 파이퍼 메이비스의 "The Strangers"는 서울이라는 상상의 공간을 토대로 시작되었다. 파이퍼 메이비스는 미국 로스 앤젤레스 출신이며, 현재 프랑스 파리에 거주하고 있다. 세계 여러도시를 여행한 작가이지만, 서울 방문은 이번이 처음이다. 벡터스페이스는 이러한 작가에게 서울을 소재로 전시를 해줄 것을 요청했고, 지극히 개인적인 경험 속에 기억과 그리움을 토대로 작품을 진행해온 작가에게, 가본적도 없고, 느껴보지도 못한 장소를 작품으로 풀어나가야 하는 것은 큰 도전이 아닐 수 없었다. ● 작가는 서울에 대한 기억이 있는 낯선 한국사람들의 이야기들을 수집하기 시작했다. 현재 서울에 거주하지는 않지만, 그 낯선 이들의 기억을 통해, 특히 그들의 유년시절 기억을 통해, 작가는 그녀에게 낯선 도시인 서울을 개인적인 공간으로 구체화 하려하였다. 그리고 상상의 도시인 서울을 작가가 미국 초등학교 미술시간에 자주 만들었던 Shoebox Peephole Diorama (구두상자를 이용한 밀폐된 상자에 조그만 구멍을 내어 장면을 볼 수 있도록 한것) 를 통해 표현하였다. 낯선 사람들의 이야기들과 작가의 주관적인 상상의 필터 (Filter), 우리가 흔히 사진과 편지 등의 기억을 보관하는 구두상자들, 그리고 유년시절의 공예재료를 통해, 작가의 서울로의 여행은 그녀의 실제적인 도착보다 그 이전에 먼저 시작된 것이다. ■ 수니 마코소브

This solo exhibition by Piper Mavis began when she was invited to Seoul to work on a project about Seoul as an imagined space. Piper, originally from Los Angeles, and now living in Paris, is familiar with many cities around the world, but she has never had a chance to visit Seoul. How does one begin work on a project in response to a city one has never been to? This was even more challenging as her previous work tended to be quite personal, with themes of memories and nostalgia. ● The artist decided to collect personal stories of a few Korean people she encountered who used to live in Seoul and had memories of the city. Through these people's stories and childhood memories, she created a personalized tour of Seoul's landmarks and attempted to become acquainted with the foreign city. She then created the imagined city by way of a shoebox peephole diorama – which she often had to create in grade school in America. With these stories shared by strangers, through the subjective filter of the artist's imagination, in a series of shoeboxes (an item often used by people to store old photographs and letters) and craft materials, the artist's journey to Seoul began a long time before her physical arrival. ■ Sunee Markosov
