Art Lecture 2011 at Artsonje

티파니 코리아의 후원으로 2009년부터 시작된 Art Lecture at Artsonje는 동시대미술 분야에서 세계적으로 주목받는 활동을 펼치고 있는 전문가의 강연 프로그램입니다. 본 강연은 현대사회에서 예술이 생성하는 다양한 시각과 담론을 제시함으로써 잠재적인 창의력을 자극하고 예술에 대한 이해와 관심을 증대시키고자 마련되었습니다.

4th Art Lecture at Artsonje "창조자로서의 큐레이터 The Curator as Creator" ● 2011년 4월 1일 아트선재센터에서는 Art Lecture at Artsonje의 네 번째 프로그램으로 캘리포니아 예술대학 와티스 현대미술연구소(Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts at the California College of the Arts)의 디렉터이자 2011년 이스탄불 비엔날레(Istanbul Biennale)의 공동 큐레이터인 옌스 호프만(Jens Hoffmann)의 강연을 국내에서 처음으로 개최합니다. ● 옌스 호프만은 베를린 연극예술대학 에른스트 부쉬(Ernst Busch School for Performing Arts)에서 무대연출(Stage Directing), 극작술(Dramaturgy)과 문화사회학(Cultural Sociology)을 수학하고, 암스테르담 예술학교 다스아츠(DasArts Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten)에서 석사학위를 받았습니다. 현재 와티스 현대미술연구소의 디렉터로 재직하고 있으며, 1990년대 후반 이후 30회 이상의 전시를 기획하고 100개 이상의 미술과 큐레이팅 실무에 관한 글을 발표하는 등 기획자뿐 아니라 저술가와 교육자로서도 활발히 활동 중입니다. ● 호프만은 런던 현대미술연구소(Institute of Contemporary Arts, London)의 디렉터를 비롯하여 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관(Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York), 프랑크푸르트 포르티쿠스(Portikus, Frankfurt), 헬싱키의 KIASMA-현대미술관(KIASMA-Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki), 함부르크 쿤스트페어라인(Hamgurger Kunstverein), 더블린 휴즈레인미술관(Hugh Lane Museum, Dublin), 쾰른 쿤스트페어라인(Kunstverein Cologne), 베를린 쿤스트-베르크(Kunst-Werke, Berlin), 뉴욕 DIA미술센터(DIA Center for the Arts, New York), 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트-팔라스트(Kunst-Palast, Düsseldorf) 등 유럽과 미국의 주요 미술기관에서 활동하였습니다. ● 최근 2011년 제 12회 이스탄불 비엔날레와 함께 제 3회 카나리아 군도 비엔날레(The Canary Islands Biennale)의 공동 큐레이터로 임명되었으며, 2009년 제 2회 산 후안 트리엔날레(San Juan Triennale), 2008년 제 10회 리옹 비엔날레(Lyon Biennale), 2002년 프랑크푸르트 마니페스타 4(Manifesta 4), 1998년 제 1회 베를린 비엔날레(Berlin Biennale), 그리고 1997년 카셀 도큐멘타 X(Documenta X, Kassel) 등 세계 주요 비엔날레에서 활동한 바 있습니다. ● 본 강연은 그의 최근 전시인 와티스 현대미술연구소의 전시 3부작 '문학의 눈을 통해 보는 미국사' 중 마지막 전시인 『허클베리 핀 Huckleberry Finn(2010)』에 기반합니다. 이 시리즈는 상징적 의미를 지닌 미국 소설의 제목인 『오즈의 마법사 The Wizard of OZ(2008)』와 『모비-딕 Moby-Dick(2009)』 등으로 구성되었습니다. 여기에서 큐레이터는 미술사나 문학사에 대해 다루는 것이 아니라 저자이면서 스토리텔러로서 책의 내러티브를 전시로 치환하고 관람객을 독자로 변환시킵니다. 원작 속의 관람객/독자/여행자는 현대미술 작품에 대한 새로운 경험을 통해 역사 속 미국을 새로운 시선으로 바라보게 됩니다. ● 옌스 호프만의 이번 강연은 인류학적 시각에서 인간사를 바라보는 동시대미술의 새로운 역할을 제안하는 창조자로서 큐레이터의 잠재적 향로를 모색해 보는 자리가 될 것입니다. ■ 아트선재센터

*2011년 10월 7일 (금), 제 5회 프로그램으로 이숙경(Dr.Sook-Kyoung Lee)의 강연 "Making Waves: A Curator's Tale"이 예정되어 있습니다. 현재, 이숙경은 테이트 리버풀의 전시와 디스플레이 큐레이터이며 테이트 컬렉션의 아시아-태평양 소장품 구입위원회 큐레이터로 활동하고 있습니다.

This program invites international specialists in various fields of contemporary art to present their perspectives on the practices and discourses generated by art and the diverse points of view that exist today. By establishing a platform for discussion, the Art Lecture at Artsonje hopes to stimulate the potential for creativity and deepen public understanding and interest in art.

4th Art Lecture at Artsonje "The Curator as Creator" ● For the Art Lecture at Artsonje to be held on April 1, 2011, Jens Hoffmann, Director of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts at the California College of the Arts and co-curator of the 2011 Istanbul Biennale, will give his first lecture in Korea. ● Jens Hoffmann was trained as a theater director and studied Stage Directing, Dramaturgy, and Cultural Socioloby at the Ernst Busch School for Performing Arts in Berlin. He holds an MA in Theater from DasArts School for Advanced Research in Theater and Dance Studies at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Amsterdam. In addition to his curatorial practice, Hoffmann lectures and has written more than 100 essays on art and curatorial practice. ● Hoffmann was Director of Exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and has worked for institutions such as Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Portikus, Frankfurt; KIASMA-Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Hugh Lane Museum, Dublin; Kunstverein Cologne; Hamburger Kunstverein; Kunst-Werke, Berlin; DIA Center for the Arts, New York; Museum Kunst-Palast, Düsseldorf, and others. He is currently the Director of the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts at the California College of the Arts(CCA) in San Francisco. ● Hoffmann has also been recently appointed as the co-curator of the 12th Istanbul Biennale and the 3rd Biennale of the Canary Islands. He has curated more than three-dozen exhibitions since the late 1990s: he was co-curator of the 2nd San Juan Triennale(2009), curator of the 10th Lyon Biennale(2008), guest curator for Manifesta 4, Frankfurt(2002), and assistant curator for the 1st Berlin Biennale(1998). In 1997, he organized the theater program Theater Outlines for Documenta X, Kassel. ● Hoffmann's lecture will revolve around his recent exhibitions at the Wattis Institute based on iconic American novels of which Huckleberry Finn(2010) was the final installment in a trilogy looking at American history through the lens of literature. The series began in 2008 with The Wizard of Oz, an exploration of L. Frank Baum's book, and continued in 2009 with Moby Dick, inspired by Herman Melville's famous novel. What connects these books, in addition to their crucial place in the American literary canon and the larger public consciousness, are a number of elements that have a particular relationship to the making of exhibitions. These three exhibitions were not specifically about the history of art or the history of literature, but rather used art and literature as devices to look at human history in an almost anthropological fashion. The curator is not only the author but also a kind of storyteller, translating the narrative of a book into the narrative of an exhibition and turning the viewer into a reader. The arrangement of all of these elements was done with the intention of grounding the viewer/reader/traveler in the original story and periodically reintroducing the book between experiences of looking at the new artworks by contemporary artists. ● Hoffman's upcoming lecture at Artsonje will be an occasion to explore the potential of the curator as creator of new roles that contemporary art can play in human history. ■ Artsonje Center
