Home and Belongings "Home is Women"

프로젝트 형식으로 이어지는『Home and Belonging』는 한국에서 첫 번째 전시를 열고 대부분 작가들의 본거지였던 영국으로 그리고 점차 다른 나라로 이어지며 특히 작가들의 집을 대상으로 이 어지는 형태이다. 이 프로젝트는 기존의 전시장을 탈피한 집이라는 새로운 전시 공간을 통해 집에 대한 현대인들의 담론과 글로벌한 공공성을 작가들의 다양한 장르와 형식으로 진행된다.

현대인들은 대부분 고향을 떠나보고 고향이 아닌 곳에서 머물며, 집은 현대사회에 원형과 다른 모습으로 변해간다. 참여작가 모두 고향을 떠나 새로운 집을 접해봤고 타국생활을 해본 작가들이 가지는 집에 관한 심도 있는 이야기들을 각기 다른 공간- 거실, 방 , 욕실, 주방 등 서로 분리되면서도 집이라는 연계된 공간을 통해 보여준다. 집은 새로운 전시의 장과 형식이며 한국에 새로운 미술 형식의 소개와 다양한 복잡장르를 한데 어울러, 예술은 일상적인 생활과 함께 호흡한다는 걸 보여준다. 또한 이 전시의 관객은 모두 "초대된 자"로 개인의 집이 가족이나 일부 초대된 자들이 머무는 아주 사적인 공간이 아닌 공개된 공간으로 모든 관객은 '초대된 자'로 전시에 초대한다.

이번 전시는 Home and Belongings 의 첫번째 프로젝트로 '집은 여자'라는 소주제로 프랑스작가 -루이즈 부르주아의 작품「Women House」제목에서 그 주제를 착안하여 여성의 시작으로 재구성한 집을 여성작자들이 구성한다. ● 다양한 전공(사진, 미디어, 회화, 디자인, 건축 등)으로 구성된 작가들은 전시 참여 작가의 역할뿐 아니라 프로젝트 내에서 각자의 역할이 있으며 각기 방으로 구성되어 이루어진 집처럼 각자의 역할들을 통해 집이 그려지는 방식으로 한 명의 기획자가 전시의 이미지를 모두 그려내는 기존의 기획전이나 단체전과 형식이 다르다. ● 이 전시는 2011 년 3월 8일부터 14일까지 서울 노원구의 낡은 복층 주택에서 이루어진다. 1970년대 말 한 남자가 자신의 애첩을 위해 지은 집으로 근래에 보기 드문 독특한 형태로 4가구가 살았으며 4가구에 모두 전시가 되며 전시가 끝나면 이 집은 허물어지며 다음 전시는 런던으로 이동한다. ■ 박혜원

The project of Home and Belongings is the first time an art exhibition happens in an ordinary town house in Korea. House as a platform for art exhibitions has been a trend widely practiced in Britain and other European countries in recent years as a result of closure of many art galleries due to recession and other economic factors. The house can be a space where the traditional approach to art exhibition and viewing can be addressed radically since it challenges and contrasts the white cube of a gallery space. Galleries conventionally provide a space for contemplation of art in a sterile environment conversely a domestic setting can disturb and juxtapose the art work(s) with its own dictum offering a new way to view art. ● The Home and Belongings project will occur as a two part international exhibition in Seoul and London respectively. The first part of the project, to be shown in Seoul, is titled Home and Belonging I, House is Women and consists entirely of female artists who have experienced life (or part of) away from their home for various reasons such as studying abroad. The second part of the exhibition titled Home and belonging II, will be held in a house in London as a kind of a cultural exchange. The symbolism of dislocation and uprooting to a new house/country is a metaphor for displacement of art from a gallery to a domestic setting a move away form its natural habitat. This exhibition can open a new chapter in the way art is exhibited in South Korea allowing young and contemporary artists to exhibit and the allowing the art to be more accessible creating a new phase in Korean Art exhibition. ● Historically space itself has been divided between the sexes, the house often seen as the female space and the public space often regarded as the male. The concept of this project is to have an art exhibition within a functioning house where the viewer can wander at leisure, where the boundary between what is household collection and what is art is dissolved. Where the viewer can ponder not only on the taste and identity of the anonymous house owner but also on the context of the art. ● House has numerous meanings but at its roots it is the space universal to most of us where through a collective narrative our identities are carved. The house as a private space transforming into an "open house" allowing and inviting the viewer to trespass its mysterious realm becomes a utopian gesture. ● This exhibition as an amalgamation of international female artists all with their own stories addresses what home and belonging means. It will be distributed throughout the house with each room becoming a space for an art exhibition- the living room as a space for displaying paintings on the walls and a video art on TV, video projections in the bathroom and installations in the kitchen, each space linked together by other installations of video, photography, drawings etc. incorporating multiple mediums. ● This project start in Nowon-Ku, Seoul, Korea in an old split-level unique townhouse with the view to move to an ordinary house in London where the participants of the project reside. ■ Hyewon Park_Sohelia Sokanvari
