RHIZOSPHERE: Directions in Motion

올해 4회를 맞이하는 4482 [sasapari] 전이 「Rhizosphere: Directions in Motion (리조스피어)」 (기획: 박계연) 이란 전시명 아래, 2011년 2월 24일 (목)부터 28일 (월)까지 런던 템즈 강변 문화의 중심지인, 사우스뱅크에 위치한 바지하우스에서 주영 한국 문화원의 후원으로 개최된다.

리좀(Rhizome)은 위계질서나 서열없이 어느 방향으로도 접속하여 뻗어나갈 수 있는 땅속줄기이다. 들뢰즈와 가타리는 1980년에 발표된 저서 『천 개의 고원 (A Thousand Plateaus)』에서 통일되거나 위계화되지 않은 다양성, 접속성 그리고 창조의 무한한 가능성으로 리좀 개념을 제기하였다. 해마다 다른 구성원들이 자발적으로 모여 다양한 주제, 소재, 표현 방식, 매체로 구성된 작품들을 전시하는 4482 전시는 리좀과 닮아 있다. 우리는 '서로 다른 개체들이 접속하여 생성되는 새로운 사고와 사유의 선들이 증식하는 토양'과 같은 본 전시를 '리조스피어(Rhizo + Sphere)'라 칭한다.

전례없이 활발한 활동을 보이는 영국 내 한국 작가들은 이곳 런던을 거쳐가는 나그네 (Passer-by)로써 또, 글로벌시대 아트 씬(Scene)의 구성원으로써 각자가 추구하는 예술적 목적을 실현 중이다. 한국과 영국이라는 두 나라를 경험한 작가들은 그들 고유의 내부 철학과 신념, 사회, 경제 등의 외부 현상을 바탕으로 독자적으로 다양한 작품세계를 구축하고 있다. 런던이라는 지점 그리고 현시점을 공유하는 작가들이 만들어내는 본 전시에서는 4482라는 테두리 안에서 서로 다른 기준으로 포섭되고 접속되며 분기되는 회화를 비롯한 조각, 사진, 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 200여 점의 다양한 작품을 볼 수 있다.

전시를 기획한 박계연 큐레이터는, "본 전시를 통해, 작가들이 런던에서 받은 영감을 작품으로 보여줄 뿐만 아니라, 뿌리내린 토양의 성질을 바꾸는 리좀과 같이 그들이 한데 뭉쳐 창조해내는 새로운 가능성으로 런던 미술계에 영향력을 보여주기를 기대한다"고 밝혔다. 2007년부터 시작된 4482전은, 꾸준히 증가하는 영국 내 한국 작가들의 작품을 적극적으로 선보이고, 그들의 활동을 기록∙조명한다. 4482는 국제전화에 쓰이는 영국과 한국의 국가코드를 조합해 만든 타이틀이다. 참여작가들은 한국인의 감수성과 예술적 재능이 영국이라는 새로운 문화적 토양에서 접목되어 탄생된 작품들을 선보인다. 2010년부터는 [sasapari]라는 우리말 발음을 사용해, 4482 전시 타이틀을 고유 명사화 시킴으로써 세계인들의 한국 현대 미술에 대한 관심을 증대시키고, 나아가 국가를 대표하는 문화브랜드로의 성장을 기대하고 있다. ■ 박계연

The 4th 4482 [sasapari] exhibition is the annual showcase for Korean contemporary artists living and working in London. This year, entitled 「Rhizosphere: Directions in Motion」(curated by Gyeyeon Park), it presents the latest work from 60 artists at the Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, a cavernous 4-storey building located in London’s South Bank cultural quarter by the River Thames. ● A 'Rhizome' is a subterranean stem spreading out in any direction. It is a system of connections with no hierarchy and no order. With its features of connectivity, heterogeneity and multiplicity, the concept of rhizome was explored by Deleuze and Guattari in their book, A Thousand Plateaus. 4482 is a continually evolving voluntary group of artists and the works cover a wide variety of themes, ways of expression and mediums. 'Rhizo + Sphere' refers to both the space and time of the exhibition. ● Many of the works reflect both the artists' internal (philosophy and faith) and external (social and environmental) influences intertwined. In this group exhibition, seemingly disparate artworks are linked by themes or materials and these connections suggest an endless network of possibilities and ideas. ● The artists are each on a long personal journey, but for a short period, they share time and space together which may affect their individual future directions. Curator Gyeyeon Park who has organised the exhibition since 2010, states that "these artworks are not only inspired by being made in London, but as rhizome transforms the soil, by its very existence, this exhibition alters London." ● 4482 has continued since 2007 to highlight an increasing number of South Korean artists in London and document their artistic activities. All participants created their works within a new cultural base in Britain with Korean emotion and artistic talent. It aims to represent the cross-cultural dialogue in which the artists are inevitably engaged. This meaning is connected to the name of this artist group, 4482, that is the combination of international dialing codes of the two countries. Through calling 4482 as [sasapari] which is the pronunciation of 4482 in Korean fashion, the interest for Korean art can be increased on an international level with the hope that this name will be developed into a representative cultural brand of Korea.
