아포리아 Aporia

황량한 공간에 버려진 말들 ● 텍스트에 대한 나의 관심은 영국유학에서 비롯되었다. 타국에서 이방인으로서의 생활을 경험하면서 '언어가 갖는 한계성'에 대해 고민하게 되었고, 이러한 고민은 나의 이전 작업 「접경(Bordering North Korea)」시리즈에 반영되었다. 「접경(Bordering North Korea)」에서 나는 북한의 접경지대를 촬영한 풍경사진에 북한의 선전문구('We are happy', 'Our country is the paradise of the people' 등)를 직접 삽입함으로써 북한체제의 비극을 역설적으로 보여주고자 했다.

「접경」시리즈를 진행하면서 사진과 텍스트의 접목에 대해 더욱 고민하게 되었고, '이미지로서의 언어'에 대해 깊이 매료되었다. 이번에 전시할 「Aporia」시리즈는 롤랑 바르트의 책 『사랑의 단상(A Lover's Discourse)』을 모티브로 한 것이다. 이 책에서 롤랑 바르트는 사랑에 빠진 이가 겪는 딜레마에 대해 얘기한다. 만약 당신이 사랑에 빠진다면 상대는 수수께끼의 존재가 되며, 당신은 끊임없이 이유를 찾고 해석하는 일을 반복하게 된다. 사랑의 감정을 표현하고자 하는 당신의 욕망은 거짓과 갈등, 막다른 길을 야기하고, 당신은 끝없이 이 진부한 표현들을 소비하면서 결국 사랑하는 대상이 아니라 '사랑을 사랑'하게 된다. '너'와 '나' 사이 어디에도 안착하지 못하고 허공 속에 되풀이되는 사랑의 언어들이, 아이러니하게도 현대인의 고독과 비애를 드러내고 있다는 생각이 들었다. 나는 도시 속 화려하게 빛을 발하는 네온사인들을 보며 그 이면의 공허함과 쓸쓸함을 상상하기 시작했다.

나는 인터넷이나 TV, 영화에서 흔하게 접할 수 있는 사랑과 애증의 표현들을 수집하기 시작했다. 누구나 한번쯤은 들어봤을, 한번쯤은 읊조려봤을 이 진부한 표현들은 미디어에 의해 확산되고, 순환되며, 우리의 실제 삶 속에서도 절대적인 힘을 발휘하게 된다. (가령, 구글에 'I love you with all my heart'를 검색하면 약 2백만 개의 결과가 나온다) 이 흔하고 상투적인 말들을 이름 모를 황량한 공간에 데려간다면 어떤 일이 벌어질까? 나는 네온으로 텍스트를 제작하여 풍경에 직접 설치하기 시작했다. 진부한 사랑의 문구들이 황량한 공간을 만나, 통렬한 아름다움으로 빛나는 순간을 경험할 수 있었다.

아포리아(Aporia)는 그리스어로 '막다른 곳에 다다름'이라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 적막하고 황량한 공간에서 희미하게 퍼지는 사랑의 외침들이야말로 어떤 논리와 철학으로도 해결할 수 없는 '사랑'이라는 막다른 길을 가리키고 있는 것이다. 이번 전시에서는 10여 점의 사진 이미지와 더불어 비디오, 네온 설치 작업이 관객들을 만날 계획이다. 네온과 풍경, 텍스트가 만나는 이 전시를 통해, 관객들이 자신만의 사랑의 단상에 잠기는, 짧고 강렬한 여행을 경험하게 되기를 기대한다. ■ 이정

Abandoned words in deserted places ● My experience of studying in UK has turned me on to text. In those days, I realized the 'limit of language' while living as a stranger in a foreign country, and this was reflected in my previous work series of Bordering North Korea. There, I inserted some phrases of North Korean propaganda (for example, 'We are happy', 'Our country is the paradise of the people,' etc) in the landscape photos taken of the borderland area in order to paradoxically show the tragic reality of the regime. ● As I was working on the series of Bordering North Korea, I got more and more interested in incorporating text into photo and completely grabbed by the concept of 'language as an image.' The new exhibition of 'Aporia' series took the motif from A Lover's Discourse by Roland Barthes. In his essay, Roland Barthes tells a dilemma experienced by people who fall in love. If you fall in love, your beloved one becomes a sort of a mystery, so you will ceaselessly try to figure out the reasons for your mysterious feelings for him or her and interpret them. The desire to express your love produces lies and conflicts and leads to a dead end that is a love, and as you endlessly consume the trite words of love, the object of your affection will eventually become the love itself instead of lovee. The sweet nothings being reiterated in the air, unable to reach anyone between you and me, seem to reveal the solitude and sorrow of modern people ironically. ● I began imagining the emptiness and lonesomeness behind the glowing neon signs in the city. And I started collecting the expressions of love and hatred that can be commonly learned from the Internet, TV or movies. Such clichés that everyone might hear or say at least once are spreading and circulating via media, and they exercise absolute power in our real life. (For instance, if you type the phrase 'I love you with all my heart' in search engines like Google, it will show about 2 million results.) What would happen if you take those common plain languages into the unknown deserted places? I made texts with neon and placed them in the landscape photos. These hackneyed phrases meet the deserted places, ushering you into a beautifully sparkling moment. ● Aporia means 'coming to a dead end' in Greek. The cry for love faintly spreading across the desolate places indicates the dead end of 'love' that can't be solved neither with any logics and philosophy. This exhibition will present video works and neon installations along with ten photo images. I expect viewers to have a short but impressive trip of day-dreaming their own love stories through this exhibition displaying a nice combination of neon, landscape and texts. ■ LEEJUNG
