"2011 해인아트프로젝트 개최를 위한 국제학술회의"는 2011년 9월 천년고찰 해인사에서 개최 예정인 동시대 미술제 "해인아트프로젝트"를 앞두고 프로젝트의 방향성을 모색하고자 합니다. 해인아트프로젝트는 해인사의 역사와 자연, 불교 정신과 문화적 가치를 드러내는 동시대 미술 프로젝트로 기획되었고, 2011년을 시작으로 향후 지속적으로 이어질 것입니다. 12월 16일과 17일 해인사에서 열리는 학술회의에서는 "2011 해인아트프로젝트"의 예술총감독 김선정을 비롯해 국제 미술계에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 이콘 갤러리 디렉터 조나단 와킨스, 모리 미술관 수석 큐레이터 마미 카타오카, 그리고 르 콩소르시움 국제기획 디렉터와 디렉터인 김승덕과 프랭크 고트로와 같은 국제적 큐레이터들을 초청해 동시대 미술의 다양한 장소 특정적 프로젝트와 미술가들의 작업 사례들을 살펴봅니다. 나아가 해인사라는 사찰 공간에서 구현될 수 있는 미술 프로젝트의 성격과 형식, 그 확장적 개념에 대한 새로운 아이디어들을 심도 깊게 나누고자 합니다. 이어서 18일 아트선재센터에서는 건축가이자 한국 고건축 연구가인 김봉렬 교수를 모시고 해인사 건축 공간의 예술적 가치와 보존 필요성을 조명합니다. 이번 학술회의가 향후 해인아트프로젝트가 지향할 장기적인 비전과 함께 해인사 공간과 미술 작품이 어떠한 방식으로 서로 개입하고 조응할 수 있을지에 대한 가능성을 제안하는 첫 단초가 될 것입니다.

■ 발제자 소개 김선정(Sunjung Kim) / 2011 해인아트프로젝트 예술 총감독, 서울, 한국 서울을 중심으로 활동하는 독립 큐레이터로 1990년대부터 한국의 동시대 예술을 세계 무대에 알리고 국제적인 전시를 기획, 동시대 예술의 흐름을 한국에 소개하여 왔다. 2005년에는 베니스비엔날레의 커미셔너로 한국관 전시 기획, 2006년부터 2010년까지 동시대예술축제 "플랫폼 Platform"의 총감독으로 활동하였다. 2009년에는 로스엔젤레스 카운티미술관(LACMA)과 휴스턴미술관(MFAH)에서 "당신의 밝은 미래: 12인의 한국현대미술전"을 기획하였으며 2010년 미디어 시티 서울 2010 "트러스트"전 총감독을 역임하였다. 현재 한국예술종합학교 미술원 교수 겸 2011 해인아트프로젝트 총감독으로 활동 중이다. 김승덕(Seungduk Kim) / 르 콩소르시움 국제기획 디렉터, 디종, 프랑스 메리 마운틴 맨해튼 대학교에서 미술사를 전공, 뉴욕 종합대학에서 프랑스 문화사 석사, 헌터 대학에서 미술사 석사학위를 받았다. 1998년 파리1대학에서 미술사 전공으로 DEA, 박사학위 과정을 수료했다. 유럽에 거주하며 삼성문화재단(현 삼성미술관 리움) 자문 큐레이터를 지냈으며, 파리 퐁피두 센터 어소시에이티드 객원 큐레이터를 지냈다. 2000년부터 현재까지 프랑스 아트센터 르콘소시움에서 국제 전시기획 디렉터로 활동하며, 프랭크 고트로와 함께 발렌시아 비엔날레 커미셔너, 야오이 쿠사마 순회전 등 공동 큐레이터이자 비평가로 활동 중이다. 프랭크 고트로(Franck Gautherot) / 르 콩소르시움 디렉터, 디종, 프랑스 유연성 있는 구조의 틀에 박히지 않은 현대미술 아트센터로서 70년 말부터 작가들과 직접 새로운 프로젝트 개발에 주력을 한 실험관/라보라토리 개념의 장으로 알려져 있는 르 콘소르시움을 1977년 설립하였다. 르 콘소시움은 수많은 개인 및 단체전을 진행하였고 이중 대표적인 것으로는 "제 7회 리옹 비엔날레, 2001년 베니스 비엔날레 프랑스관 "피에르 위그," 1998년 파리 퐁피두 센터의 "르 콘소르시움.콜" 전이 있으며, APAP 2007에 김승덕과 함께 공동 큐레이터로 참여했었다. 마미 카타오카 (Mami Kataoka) / 모리 미술관 수석 큐레이터, 도쿄, 일본 동경 모리 미술관의 수석 큐레이터이자 2007년부터 런던 헤이워드 갤러리의 국제 협력 큐레이터로 활동 중이다. 모리 미술관에서 진행한 대표적인 전시로는 "오자와 츠요시: 예스와 노로 응답!"(2004), "예술은 정신을 위한 것이다: UBS 컬렉션"(2008), "아이 웨이웨이: 무엇에 따라서?"(2009), "자연의 감각: 일본 자연의 지각"(2010) 등이 있다. 헤이워드 갤러리에서는 "외국어로 웃기"(2008), "우지노와 로테이터스"(2009)전을 진행 하였다. 2009년 "플랫폼 인 기무사," 2009년과2010년에는 Sh컨템포러리 아트페어 "발견: 동시대 발견하기"전에 참여하였다. 조나단 와킨스(Jonathan Watkins) / 이콘 갤러리 디렉터, 버밍햄, 영국 1999년부터 영국 버밍햄에 이콘 갤러리 디렉터로 활동하고 있다. 1995년부터 1997년까지 런던 서펜타인 갤러리의 큐레이터로 활동하였고, 1998년 시드니 비엔날레에 예술총감독을 역임하고, 2006년 상하이 비엔날레, 2007년 샤르자 비엔날레, 팔레스테인 비엔날레의 큐레이토리얼 팀에서 활동하였다. 2010년 현재 후앙 두와 함께 다큐멘트 II 공동 큐레이터로 활동 중이다. 일본 작가 온 카와라의 모노그래프를 집필하기도 했다. 김봉렬(Bong-ryol Kim) / 한국종합예술학교 건축과 교수, 서울, 한국 한국예술종합학교 건축과 교수이자 서울시 문화재위원이다. 서울대 건축학과를 졸업하고 동대학원에서 공학박사를 취득했으며, 영국 AA 건축대학원을 수료하였다. 고건축 분야의 해박한 지식을 토대로 『김봉렬의 한국건축 이야기 1,2,3』, 『불교건축』, 『서원건축』, 『한국의 건축』, 『법주사』, 『화엄사』 등을 집필하였고, 프랑크푸르트 한국정원, 현대중공업 울산영빈관, 아모레퍼시픽 추모관 등의 건축물을 설계하였다.

In 2011, South Gyeongsang Province and Hapcheon County will host a commemorative festival to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of the Tripitaka Koreana – the world's most complete collection of Buddhist teachings engraved on 81,258 wood printing blocks. Hosted at the renowned one thousand two hundred year old Haein Temple located on Mount Gaya, the festival will be accompanied by a long-term contemporary art project to be launched in September 2011. The Haein Art Project will invite artists to create work that engages with the temple's buildings, natural surroundings, as well as its history and cultural heritage. To initiate this process artistic director Sunjung Kim will gather leading professionals - Jonathan Watkins, Mami Kataoka, Seungduk Kim, Franck Gautherot - for a three-day workshop at Haeinsa and Artsonje Center this December. In addition to exchanging their expertise on site-specific and public art projects, these professionals will also address the specificities of Haeinsa. In particular, for his presentation at Artsonje on December 18th, Professor of Architecture at Korea National University of Arts Bong-ryol Kim will highlight the architecture of the site and how this could in itself be perceived as an art project. The findings resulting from this gathering will establish the groundwork for developing the short and long term goals and the conceptual framework of the Haein Art Project.

Speakers Sunjung Kim (Artistic Director, 2011 Haein Art Project, Seoul) Sunjung Kim is a Seoul-based independent curator. She has played a pivotal role in the inter-change between Korean contemporary art and the international art field since the 1990s. As chief curator of Artsonje Center (1993-2004), she curated exceptional Korean artists' exhibitions and also created new forms of exhibitions with international artists. In 2003, Kim was awarded the Légion d'Honneur Chevalier from the French Embassy in Korea. She was the commissioner of the Korean Pavilion at Venice Biennale 2005. From 2006 she initiated an annual contemporary art festival, Platform Seoul, and curated Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists From Korea at LACMA, LA. Kim was the Artistic Director of the 6th Seoul International Media Art Biennale in 2010. Jonathan Watkins (Director, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham) Jonathan Watkins has been Director of the Ikon Gallery since 1999. Since then, he has also been guest curator at the Castello di Rivoli, the Venice Biennale, the Hayward Gallery and Tate. Previously he worked as Curator of the Serpentine Gallery (1995-1997) and Director of Chisenhale Gallery (1990-1995). In 1998 he was Artistic Director of the Biennale of Sydney and has been on the curatorial team of the Shanghai Biennale (2006), Sharjah Biennial (2007) and Palestinian Biennial (2007). Mami Kataoka (Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo) Mami Kataoka is Chief curator at the Mori Art Museum, having curated numerous contemporary art exhibitions there since 2003. In 2007, Kataoka joined the curatorial team at the Hayward Gallery as their first international curator and is currently International Associate Curator there. Recent exhibitions curated by Kataoka include Laughing in a Foreign Language (2008) at the Hayward Gallery, Platform in Kimusa in Seoul (2009), and Sensing Nature: Perception of Nature in Japan (2010) at the Mori Art Museum. Seungduk Kim (International Exhibition Director of Le Consortium, Dijon) Seungduk Kim has been active as a writer and curator for many years. She had been working for the Samsung Foundation of Art and Culture as Consultative Curator based in Europe. She was also invited as Associated Curator in Collection Dept. at the National Museum of Modern Art, George Pompidou Center. Since 2000, she has been collaborating with Le Consortium as Associated Curator/International Project Director and has co-curated with Franck Gautherot for various international projects. Her recent projects are Lynda Benglis Traveling solo show, Flower Power and Yayoi Kusama, traveling exhibition. Franck Gautherot (Director of Le Consortium, Dijon) Le Consortium was founded by Xavier Douroux and Franck Gautherot 1977 Dijon, France and Eric Troncy joined as co-director in 1995. Le Consortium has been recognized as a non-conventional art center for contemporary art with a flexible structure. Among hundreds of exhibitions, Le Consortium realized the '7th Lyon Biennal', (Lyon 2003), Pierre Huyghe (The French Pavillon, Venice Bienial, Venice, 2001), Le Consortium.coll (the Centre Pompidou, Paris 1998). Franck Gautherot and Seungduk Kim participated in APAP 2007 as co-curators. Bong-ryol Kim (Architecture Professor, Korea National University of Arts, Seoul) Bong-ryol Kim is currently an architecture professor at Korea National University of Arts and is a Board Member of Cultural Heritage. He is an expert in ancient architecture and has written numerous books such as Buddhist Architecture, Architecture of Confucian Schools and Story in Korean Architecture 1, 2, 3. He also designed the Koreanishe Garten im Frankfurt am Main, Guest house of Hyundai Industrial Co., and the Memorial Pavilion for Amore-pacific Co.
