Encounter

작품은 나의 호기심이나 의문점의 연구에 대한 결과물이다. ● 멍하니 보게 된 광경 혹은 우연히 읽게 되는 문구들 또는 스치듯 들려오는 말같이 사소한 것들은 때로 그것들과 전혀 상관없는 해석으로 내게 스며들어 다시 다른 생각을 시작하게끔 하는 다소 엉뚱한 시작점들이기도 한다. 얼마전 도로 주행중 정면에 맞닥드려 한동안 나와 마주하고 있던 달리는 차와 그 안에 있던 나의 그림자처럼... 수년간 나의 의문을 불러일으키고 생각을 곱씹게 했던 것은 사람들의 시각에 관한 것이었다. 시각의 차이에서 오는 다른 사람과의 생각의 갭(gap)은 나를 불편하게 만들었었고, 이전에는 크게 다가오지 않았던 그 불편함은 타인의 다른 생각과 관점에 대한 호기심으로 바뀌게 되었다. 나에게 필요하기 이전에는 존재하되 그 존재를 깨닫지 못하고, 내 것과 충돌하기 전엔 다른 것을 인지하지 않는 '나'의 프로그램화된 사고의 방식들을 흔들어 줄 수 있는 작업에 관심을 가지고 있다. 작업을 마주 하게 되는 '나'들에게, 익숙해져 버린 것과는 다른 것들에 대한 생각을 경험할 수 있는 기회를 주고 싶다. 가치 있는 하나만을 보고 있을 때 그것을 위해 버려졌던 것이 더 가치 있는 것일 수 있다는 것을 '나'는 너무 자주 잊게 되는 것 같다.

나와 다른 것들을 돌아볼 수 있는 폭넓은 시각을 경험하기 위해 내가 가진 주관적 시각의 틀을 깨뜨리는 방법으로 하나의 이미지 조각내기, 의미 변형하기, 드러나지 않는 것 드러내기 혹은 반대로 감추기 등의 요소들을 작업에 이용한다. 작업에서 관객에게 주어지는 약간의 낯설음- 이미지 조각내기, 본래의 의미 변형하기, 보이지 않는 것을 드러내거나 보이는 것 감추기-이 관객에게 하나의 시각 외의 다른 것에 대한 호기심을 가져다주길 바란다. ■ 오정선 ·

My works are the results of my curiosity or queries. ● A landscape from a vacant look, phrase that was read coincidentally or conversation which just glanced off my ear infiltrates me with totally different meanings. Those extravagant tipping points make me to ponder again of different thoughts and meanings. For many years, I have been questioning and deliberately thinking of people's vision. Difference in views resulted as a gap of thoughts. This had been irritating me ever since. This irritation, which did not bothered me before had changed into the curiosity ofthe others different thoughts and perspectives. Until I find the need, the existed being is not recognized. Not until the being collide with my being, I do not acknowledge. The being which shakes "My"programmed way of thinking is the subject of my works. The "I"s who confronts with the work, I would like to give them the experience which could result into the different wonders regarding the familiar matters. "I"s tend to discard the rest when concentrated into the valuable matter without knowing that discarded thoughts might be with more values. ● To look back at the different beings and experience the wide point of views, I insist to break through my subjective frame of optical views. Methods such as fragmenting the images, altering the meanings, revealing the unseen or in opposite, hiding the revealed objects are used to express my ideas to the work. I expect that the subtle strangeness that the audience experience – fragmented images, altered meanings, revealed unseen and hided objects – will arouse their curiosities and queries for the multiple optical views. ■ OHJUNGSUN
