그릴 수 없는 것들의 그림, 힙합을 그리다. ● 내 그림의 모티브는 한국힙합이며, 나는 그것을 한국화로 구현하고 있다. 그냥 힙합으로 통칭하지 않고 굳이 '한국힙합'이라고 구체적으로 명시한 이유는 그것이 서양의 힙합과는 다르게 다가오기 때문이다. 외국힙합은 비트나 전체적인 음악적 느낌은 좋지만 가사를 통해 전달되는 메시지를 완전하게 이해할 수 없어서 답답하다. 그러나 우리말과 글로 쓴 랩(가사)은 그들이 음악을 통해 말하고자 하는 것이 무엇인지 명확하게 알 수 있으며, 음악적 표현 속에도 알게 모르게 우리의 정서가 담겨있다. 그래서 나는 한국힙합에 담긴 정서를 느낀다. 이것이 내가 한국힙합에 집착하는 이유 중 하나이다. 아름다운 한글로 쓴 가사와 진실된 목소리로 뱉어내는 랩퍼들의 소리, 그리고 음악 전체를 에워싸고 있는 정서가 나로 하여금 그것을 그리게 한다. 가사나 메시지, 리듬과 음률 같은 음악 자체의 구성요소를 모두 그림으로 표현 할 수는 없다. 그러나 그들의 음악을 전체화된 하나의 공감으로 느낄 때, 그것은 이미지로 전환될 수 있다. 한국힙합에서 보고 듣고 느끼는 것 모두가 내 그림에서 하나의 이미지로 승화된 것이다.

내 작품에서 가장 중요한 요소는 색이다. 음악으로부터 전달된 메시지와 공감은 특정한 형태(形態)가 아닌 '색조(色調)'로 환원되고 있으며, 화면 전체에 퍼져있는 색들은 서로 어울림과 비틀림이 한데 어우러지면서 드러나는 전체적인 형상이 그것이다. 미술에서 형이 사물의 윤곽을 드러낸다면 색은 사물이나 상태로부터 불러일으키고 감정을 드러낸다. 내 그림에서도 색은 힙합으로부터 느낀 모든 공감각적 경험들을 대신한다. 그래서 화면 속에서 색은 어우러짐과 비틀어짐을 통해 지속적으로 쌓여 간다. 때로는 깊게, 때로는 탁하게, 때로는 밝게, 그리고 더러는 음울함까지도 담고 있다.

이와 더불어 두텁게 바른 호분에서 생성되는 마티에르는 힙합 가사의 자유로운 표현을 대신한다. 정해진 대로 구속된 것이 아닌 그때그때 느낌대로 바른 붓질은 어찌 보면 프리스타일 랩과 비슷하다고 할 수 있다. 그림에서 여러 겹으로 쌓인 밑색들은 랩이 들어가기 전의 곡과 같으며, 그 곡 위에 랩퍼들이 랩을 읊듯 나는 밑색 위에 이미지를 표현한다. ■ 박성민

Drawing hip hop, the picture of things cannot be drawn ● The motive of my picture is Korean hip hop and I am realizing it as Korean painting. The reason I have specifically indicated as 'Korean hip hop' rather than comprehensively named just hip hop is that it comes differently with hip hop of the West. Though foreign hip hop has a great beat as well as overall musical sense, it tends to be suffocating because the message delivering through lyrics cannot be understood perfectly. However, rap (lyrics) written by Korean can be clearly understood what was to deliver through the music and it somewhat contains our emotions. Therefore, I feel the emotion comprised in Korean hip hop and this is one of the reasons why I attach for Korean hip hop. Lyrics written by beautiful Korean, rapper's sound spitting out with true voice, and emotions surrounding the music encourage me to draw. Such components of music as lyrics, message, rhythm, and tune cannot be expressed in picture; however, it can be converted to image if their music is felt with one sense. The whole I see, listen, feel from Korean hip hop is sublimated as an image in my picture. ● Color is the most important element from my piece. Message delivered from music is restored to 'color tone' rather than a particular shape and the colors spread on the whole screen appear by matching and twisting. If the shape shows contours of object in art, color leads from object or status and presents emotions. The color also supplements sympathized experiences felt from hip hop in my picture. Therefore, color is constantly piled up through matching and twisting. It sometimes comprises deeply, darkly, brightly, and also gloominess. Matiere which is produced from thickly applied whiting supplements the free expression of hip hop lyrics. The drawing with free spirit other than restrict can be seemed similar with freestyle rap. The foundation colors built with several layers is same as the melody before starting the rap and image is expressed above the foundation color like the rappers chants rap. ■ Park Sungmin
