스틸 모바일 Still Mobile

스틸 모바일은 휴대폰 스크린의 무한 회귀를 다룬다. 스크린 속의 스크린들, 스크린을 횡단하는 스크린들 등, 도시 공간은 이와 같은 일련의 휴대폰 이용행위들을 통해 변형된다. 스틸 모바일은 휴대폰 사용자가 그러한 행위들에 대한 경험을 이야기하면서 연기시키는, 그 매개의 순간을 포착한다. 휴대폰을 통한 공존은 뒤이어 또 다른 휴대폰의 형태로 등장하는 감시의 유령에 의해 메아리치게 되는데, 이 정체 모를 휴대폰은 모바일적 순간을 포착할 때까지 기다린 후 그 순간을 무한 회귀의 바다로 이동시킨다. ● 스틸 모바일은 휴대폰으로 공공 장소에서 사진을 찍는 사람들의 이미지를 찍은, 일련의 휴대폰 사진 이미지들로 구성된다. 이는 매개된 친밀성의 형태에 관한 나의 관심을 확장시킨 것으로, 공공 장소에서 발생하는 다양한 유형의 촉각적 실천 행위들을 탐구한 것이다. 전 세계의 다양한 기념물들로부터 익숙하고 진부한 일상 생활에 이르기까지, 휴대폰 이용자들이 사진을 찍고 자신이 찍은 이미지를 옆의 다른 사람들과 공유하는 모습은 흔히 발견된다. 다양한 의례들을 대체하면서 재현하는 – 예를 들어 콘서트장에서 촛불이나 라이터 대신 휴대폰을 드는 것과 같은 - 휴대폰 스크린들의 바다는 이미지와 순간들 그리고 기억을 기록하는 것이자 편집하는 것이고 또 공유하는 것이다. 스틸 모바일은 오늘날 일상이 된 경쟁적인 스크린 문화를 축약해서 보여주고 있는 이와 같은 모바일적 순간들에 초점을 맞춘다. ● 실내 골프장과 유사한 공간 속에 설치된 스틸 모바일은 – 물리적으로 그리고 기술적으로 – 유동적인(mobile) 상황과 부동적인(immobile) 상황을 오가는 일종의 게임을 보여준다. 실내 골프장이라는 모순적인 개념처럼(사실 골프란 스포츠는 본래 야외에서 플레이 되어야 하는 것이므로), 이 공간은 실내와 야외가 뒤섞여있다. 휴대폰은 - 골프와 마찬가지로 - 이용자의 라이프스타일을 상징화해서 보여주는데, 이는 단순히 휴대폰과 연관된 문화적 인공물들을 통해서만이 아니라 일과 여가가 뒤섞이면서 이루어지는 여가활동의 일종으로서 나타난다. (중략) ● 무한 회귀하듯 휴대폰이 휴대폰 안에 또 다시 포착되는 것은 사진과 시각 문화 전반의 상태를 설명해준다. 스틸 모바일은 프레임 바깥에서 보여지는 공간을 기록하면서 시각으로부터 촉각으로, 고정에서 이동으로, 패키지화된 것으로부터 참여적인 것으로 스크린의 속성이 변화하고 있음을 설명하고자 한다. ■ 라리사 효스

Still Mobile presents the infinite regress of mobile screens. Screens within screens, screens across screens, urban spaces are being transformed through a series of mobile phone exercises. Still Mobile takes a snapshot of the mediated moment when the mobile phone user decides to narrate and defer the experience. One's mobile co-presence is further echoed by a survellient spectre in the form of another, an unknown watching mobile phone…waiting until it sees a mobile moment and then renders it into a sea of infinite regress. ● Still Mobile consists of a series of mobile phone images of people in public taking pictures via their mobile phone. This series extends my interest in mediated forms of intimacy by exploring the types of haptic exercises that are happening in public spaces. From the world's various monuments, to the so-called banality of the familiar and everyday, a mobile phone user can be found photographing and sharing their images with co-present others. Replacing and yet re-enacting so many rituals—such as substituting the candle/lighter held up at the concert—seas of mobile screens can be seen documenting, editing and sharing images, moments and memories. Still Mobile focuses on these mobile moments, as abstractions within the competing screen culture that is contemporary everyday life. ● Framed within a quasi-entertainment indoor golf course, Still Mobilereflects upon the game of being mobile—physically and technologically—whilst also being simultaneously immobile. Like the oxymoronic notion of the indoor golf course (after all, isn't golf supposed to be played outside?), inside and outside are infused. The mobile phone, like golf, symbolises the user's lifestyle — not only through the associated cultural artefacts butalso as a type of leisure activity in a period marked by fusions between work and leisure.(...) ● Like an infinite regress a mobile phone is captured inside a mobile phone, operating as a commentary on the state of both photography and visual culture in general. Still Mobiledocuments the space often deemed outside the frame to comment on the changing nature of the screen from visual to haptic, from still to mobile, packaged to participatory. ■ Larissa Hjorth
