큐브의 진화 ● 안희정의 작업에서 큐브는 역설적이고 반어적 의미를 표출하는 하나의 장치로 기능한다. 큐브는 산업화된 도시의 대표적인 표상인 아파트 혹은 우리의 일상에 너무 깊이 침투해있는 컴퓨터의 픽셀과 같은 규격화된 사각형의 형태라는 의미를 은유적으로 담고 있다. 사각형으로 된 단자를 상기하는 큐브는 우리들의 삶을 분리시키고 개인을 고립시키는 기능을 하는 단위이다. 작가는 이런 큐브를 반복적인 구조의 한 요소로 사용한다. 그러나 큐브라는 단어가 주는 딱딱한 인상과는 별도로 말랑말랑한 솜으로 채워진 천으로 된 네모난 상자 형태로 된 안희정의 큐브의 작업은 큐브가 갖는 일상적인 의미를 역전시킨다. 또한 큐브의 면들에 나타난 다양한 형태의 창이나 문을 보여주는 동일한 반복적인 사진 이미지를 통해 작가는 다양한 인간적 자취의 흔적들을 보여준다. 규격화되고 일상화된 삶의 양태 속에서 그 공간을 생동감 있게 변모시키는 것은 거기서 살아있는 인간의 호흡일 것이다. 이처럼 큐브는 그 이면에 관조적 정취가 내포되어 한편으로는 세계에 존재하는 규격화된 양태를 표상하지만 다른 한편으로는 이러한 정형화되고 고립된 연약한 인간의 삶으로 인한 현대인들의 고립감을 말랑말랑한 재질의 큐브로 그리고 이것들을 여러 개로 묶어 설치작업으로 보여줌으로써 현대인의 삶에서의 소통의 문제를 작가가 고민하고 있음을 드러낸다.

안희정에게 중요한 작업의 화두는 소통이다. 이전의 사각형의 건물을 사진으로 담아내던 작업에 비해 현재의 작업은 사진적 대상을 더욱 간결화하고 사진적 평면이 갖는 한계를 설치를 통해 극복하려고 노력하는 한편, 천에 인화한 사진 이미지를 입방체인 큐브 형태로 제작하는 작업을 통해 또 하나의 물성을 제공함으로써 관객들이 고정된 시선의 응시에 머물기 보다는 전시 공간의 여기저기를 돌아다니며 만져보기도 하는 과정을 통해 작업을 직접 체험할 수 있도록 한다. 안희정의 작품에서 무엇보다 중요한 요소는 이러한 큐브가 만들어내는 새로운 공간이다. 메를로 퐁티(Merleau-Ponty)는 몸에 관한 논의에서 인간이 자신의 감각성을 표출할 수 있는 가장 근원적 장치가 몸틀이며 이는 지각의 문제와 밀접하게 연관됨을 지적했는데 몸은 존재하는 모든 것들이 근본적으로 보이는 것이면서 동시에 스스로의 존재를 가질 수 있도록 하는 근본 매체인 것이다. 존재하는 모든 사물은 감각성(sensibilité)을 존재론적 조건으로 삼지 않고는 사물로 존재할 수 없다는 의미로, 그는 사물성을 중심으로 감각을 사물화했다.

안희정의 작업은 사물 자체의 독특한 은유를 제거하며 사진도 조각도 아닌 3차원적 물체로, 이 둘을 통합하는 새로운 매체를 창출하며, 관객의 현장성을 통해 작품의 현전성(présence)의 효과를 감지하게 한다. 천으로 된 이 큐브는 아이들이 쌓아올리는 블록 같은 형태와도 유사한 측면이 있으나 일상적인 문맥을 상실하고 추상화되면서 이것은 독특한 오브제가 된다. 그리하여 관객들이 자신의 지각과 감수성에 의해 그녀의 작품을 자유롭게 감상할 수 있게 한다. 사진적 설치라는 형태로 작업을 제시하는 것은 안희정의 방식으로 예술을 논하는 방식이다. 2차원의 평면으로서의 사진과 3차원의 입체로서의 큐브 사이의 하나의 세계는 다소 유동적이고 모호하지만, 현실의 반영 혹은 흔적으로서 사고된 사진은 추상의 다른 영역으로, 다시 말해 도시 공간에 잠재적으로 존재하고 있는 내밀하고 모호한 영역으로 나아가게 한다. 지표화된 현실과 작가의 독특한 작업을 통해 재창조된 변형된 현실 사이의 간극이 "뀌프로꼬(Quiproquo)"의 공간을 만들어 내며 작가는 자신이 바라보는 세상과 설치된 큐브 형태 속에서 관객이 바라볼 또 다른 세상 사이의 새로운 지각의 공간을 통해 부유하는 의미를 여러 개를 연결한 큐브 형태를 통해 거대한 소통 속에 융해해 내고자 한다. 안희정은 신세대 작가로, 사물의 일상성을 역전시키는 인식의 통로를 통해 소통의 의미를 상기시키려는 미적 실험 정신에 기초한 그녀의 착상은 기발하고 재밌다. ■ 손영실

An Evolution of the Cube ● In the works of Miss An, Hee Jeong, the cube serves as an apparatus that expresses paradoxical and ironical meanings. The cube metaphorically contains the meaning of the standardized rectangles found in apartment buildings in our industrialized cities and pixels of our computer monitors. The cube, which reminds us of rectangular boxes, is a unit that separates our lives and isolates individuals. The artist uses the cube as an element for frequently found structures. But aside from the rigid impression emanating from the cube, the cube of Miss An, Hee Jeong, which is filled with soft cotton, reverses its regular meaning. ● In addition, through the repeated photo images of various windows or doors depicted on the surfaces of the cube the artist shows a variety of traces left by humans. It would be the humans' breathing that transforms the space in a lively manner in our standardized and routine lives. The cube represents the way the world is standardized in one sense; on the other hand, it also shows the isolated human life standardized and weakened by modern society. Under this context, the artist is exposing her struggle to have channels of communication open in our lives by putting bundles of cubes on display. ● The major theme of the artist's works is communication. Whereas her previous works tried to express rectangular building in photos, her current works simplify photo subjects and try to overcome the limitations of the photo's 2-dimensional trait by displaying photos in a space. She turned images on cloth into the form of 3-dimensional cubes, thereby creating tangible objects. The audience does not just look at the works, but they stroll about touching them. What is the most important about her works is the new space created by the cubes. ● In his discussion on the body, Merleau-Ponty pointed out that it is the body of humans that they use to express their sensibility and that it is closely related to the matter of perception. In that sense, the body is the very essence of every existence and at the same time it is the fundamental medium that can have its own existence. He put sensibility into physical objects in the sense that everything that exists can not stand on its own unless it has sensibilité as its precondition. ● The works of Miss An, Hee Jeong get rid of unique metaphors hidden in objects and depict 3-dimensional objects which are neither photos nor sculptures. She creates a new medium where these two are integrated and makes audience feel the présence of her works by having people present at the scene. The cubes made of cloth are in a way similar to those built up by kids, but they get abstract losing their everyday meaning and turning into unique objets. In that way, audience is able to appreciate her works of art according its own perception and sensibility. Presenting her works in the form of photographic display is one method she adopts to show her art. ● The world between photos of the 2-dimensional plane and cubes of the 3-dimensional structure is somewhat vague and fluid, but it shows photos that reflect or track the reality and lets us go into the clandestine and ambiguous territory that potentially exists in the city space. The gap between surfaced realities and transformed realities created by artist's unique artistic imagination produces the space of "Quiproquo". By means of the world seen by the artist and another space for perception seen by audience, the artist tries to put them together in a huge communication frame by expressing floating meanings in the form of connected cubes. ● As an artist belonging to the new generation, Miss An, Hee Jeong is outstanding and amusing in her aesthetic experimental spirit where she seeks to remind us of the meaning of communication by providing us with the channel of perception that reverses the routine quality of objects. ■ Son, Young Sil
