가로지르고, 멈춘다. Cross and Pause

2010년 11월 조현화랑에서 정직성 작가의 7번째 개인전 『가로지르고, 멈춘다.』가 열린다. 이번 전시에서 정직성 작가는 15점의 신작들을 선보인다. 무질서하고 복잡한 서울의 주택가 구조물과 골목길의 형태에서 질서를 찾아내어 화면을 재구성하고, 부산 산업공간의 거대한 기계 덩어리와 역동적 움직임을 화면에 구현했던 정직성은 이번 전시에서 선보이는 신작들에 이르러 강렬한 색채와 자유로운 붓질로 다시 한 번 변화한다. 돌이켜 보면 정직성 작가는 매 전시 마다 꾸준히 변화와 쇄신을 시도해왔다. 이번에 보여주는 그의 작품이 낯설기도 하지만 동시에 반가운 이유도, 작품 속에서 보여주는 그의 변화가 언제나 새로우면서 동시에 전작들과의 질긴 연속성을 드러내기 때문이다. 삶의 불확정성을 화면에서 받아들여야 하는 때가 된 것 같다는 작가의 말에서 이번 전시를 위한 고민과 고된 수고로움이 느껴진다. 그의 노력이 앞으로의 우리 화단에 중요한 역할을 하게 되길 기대해 본다. ■ 조현화랑

"역설적인 것은, 존재하고 있었으나 외면하고 있던 것일 수도 있고, 어느 순간 갑자기 생겨난 것일 수도 있는 이 불안과 불확정성은 물리학의 측면에서도, 신화의 측면에서도 늘 질서의 모태라는 점이다. 우주의 질서와 신의 섭리가 모두 혼돈과 무질서에서 비롯되었다면 정직성이 목격한 불안과 불확정성, 그리고 그것이 만들어낸 무질서 역시 그것을 관통하고 있는, 혹은 작용이 예정되어 있는 더 큰 질서의 모태로 보는 것도 타당할 것이다. 정직성은 새 작업을 준비하는 동안 질서와 무질서의 역설과 관계를 발견한 듯 하다.

새 작업이 가진 가장 큰 미덕은 이 지점에 있다. 정직성은 불확정성과 불안요소가 만들어낸 무질서함을 과대평가 하거나 외면하지 않는다. 새롭게 발견한 사실을 통해 이전까지의 확신을 의심하거나 버리지 않고, 그대로 받아들여 작업에 녹여낸다. 정직성에게 불확정성의 발견이 의미하는 것은 삶과 작품 속 질서의 붕괴가 아니라 질서의 가장 원초적인 형태, 질서의 본질을 발견하는 것이다. 작가의 연속적인 발견을 통해 정직성의 새 작품들은 낯선 이미지에도 불구하고 작업의 꾸준함을, 전작들과의 질긴 연관성을, 태도와 의지의 일관성을 부여 받는다." ■ 함성언

In November 2010, Johyun Gallery cordially invites you to Jeong Zik Seong's seventh solo exhibition, 『Cross and Pause』 presenting 15 new works. Jeong's style has changed by using more vibrant colors with freely painted brush strokes whereas before, she reenacted order within cramped and swarming house constructions in the city of Seoul and dynamic movements of Busan city's heavy industrial machineries. Looking back, the artist always attempted some kind of renovation in every exhibition. Jeong's new approach may seem unfamiliar but it is pleasurable to witness the transformation yet still sustaining her signature features as well. Through artist's words about acceptance towards life's doubts, we can imply the change seen in this exhibition. We highly expect to see her continuous efforts to shine further in the art scene. ■ JOHYUN GALLERY

"Paradoxically, whether this uncertainty and unease always have existed but ignored or have suddenly appeared in front of us, in perspectives of physics and mythology, they ultimately come from strict organization. If we accept the fact that order in universe and divine providence are born from chaos, then doubts and anxieties that Jeong witnessed, and also the confusion that came from them maybe implies or even it is right to say that a larger matrix of order is expected. While working on her new works, Jeong Zik Seong seemed to have found a relationship between paradox of order and disorder. ● At this point, we can see the biggest virtue that the artist's new works carry. Jeong never overrates nor ignores the disarray that doubts and insecurities have created. She accepts the newly found truth without questioning of what was assured until now. To Jeong, the discovery of this indefiniteness means the most basic shape of order and finding its essence, not obliterating it within the work or even life. Her new style may be something we are not used to see from her, but through her perseverance in uncovering, they show their consistent connection to her past paintings, and the artist's untiring persistence." ■ Kurt Sung-un Hamm
