부산국제비디오 페스티발이 7회를 맞습니다. 지역에서 상대적으로 미약한 영상미술에 대한 관심과 영상작가지원, 그리고 영상미술의 저변확산과 관심을 위해, 비영리 예술단체인 대안공간 반디에 의해 2004년부터 부산비디오 페스티발이 시작되었습니다. 부산은 부산국제영화제(PIFF)로 인해 영화의 도시로 불리기도 하고 부산비엔날레를 개최하는 도시이기도 합니다. 하지만 미술 분야 작가들의 활동여건은 항상 어려웠으며 특히 영상미술 분야는 그 저변과 교육 환경 등이 열악하고 미술계의 관심 또한 미약합니다. 이러한 지역미술내부에서 상대적으로 소외되어 있는 영상미술에 대한 재인식과 관심을 위해, 그리고 동시대 영상미술의 흐름을 파악하기 위해 해외의 젊은 비디오작가들과 국내 영상작가들의 작품을 선정하여 소개해왔습니다.

올해 부산국제비디오페스티발에는 전해에 비해 더 많은 작품이 응모되었습니다. 국내 공모를 통해 67 편의 작품이 지원되었고 경쟁작(우수작 2점과 선정작 8점)이 가려졌습니다. 올해 전반적인 특징은 카메라와 이미지에 대한 성찰보다 이야기 자체를 전달하려는 경향이 많았고, 그에 비해 이미지를 시각화하는 작품들은 줄었습니다. 그럼에도 카메라-눈을 통해 현실에 직접적으로 개입하고 발언하는 새로운 움직임은 긍정적으로 평가되었습니다. 우수작 2점과 선정작 8점은 다양한 카메라-눈과 그것이 포착한 놀라운 이미지들을 조우하게 만드는 가능성을 열어주었습니다.

해외작은 부산국제비디오 페스티발 조직위원회가 직접 선정한 작품들과 몇 몇 커미셔너가 추천한 작품들이 상영됩니다. 독일, 미국, 영국, 이탈리아, 일본, 태국, 인도, 프랑스 등에서 실험적인 비디오 작업을 하는 작가들의 영상작품 25여점이 상영됩니다. 이번 페스티발에서 대만의 영상작가들의 흐름을 파악할 수 있는 『Stand-In Techniques"- New Taiwanese video Style』이라는 특별전과 프랑스 프레느와 국립현대미술 스튜디오 추천작을 마련하였습니다. 그리고 2010 대안공간 반디 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하여 부산에서 한 달간 거주하며 작업했던 작가들의 작품도 함께 상영됩니다.

This year marks the 7th Busan International Video Festival initiated in 2004 by the non-profit organization Alternative Space Bandee to enhance interest in video art, strengthen support for video artists, and expand the network of video artists and video art lovers. Busan is called the city of films due to the Pusan International Film Festival, and where the Busan Biennale takes place. Working conditions for artists here were particularly insufficient, and situations and environments, especially for video art remained inadequate due to lack of interests. The video art festival has chosen and introduced works by domestic and overseas up-and-coming young video artists to raise the awareness of and interest in video art, and to grasp the stream of video art. ● More artists applied to this year's video festival than last year. Two entries (award for excellence) and eight works (honorable mention) out of 67 pieces were chosen. The overall features of these works focus primarily on conveying narratives rather than reflecting on the camera and image. By comparison, less works visualizing images applied to the festivalthan last year. Nevertheless, a new movement to intervene directly in and make a statement on reality through the camera was evaluated positively. The two works awarded for excellence and the eight chosen pieces openedthe possibilities of capturing amazing images with the camera or the eyes. ● Someoverseas video works chosen directly by the Busan Video Biennale organizing committee and recommended by commissioners will also be displayed. 30 experimental video pieces by artists from Germany, America, Italy, Japan, Thailand, India, and France will be presented. A special exhibition titled Stand-in Techniques ? New Taiwanese Video Style will take place as part of the festival. Piecesby artists who worked for one month in Busan in Bandee's 2010 alternative space residency program will also be on show. ● I thank Rachel Jin-sob Kim (Sunggok Art Museum curator) for recommending artworks Caspar Stracke (artist and Dombo video festival director), Torsten Zenas Burns (Video artist), Woo Jing(Artist), and Lee Hee-won(Artist) for assuming the role of overseas commissioners Kim Man-seok (art critic) and Shim Jun-seob (media artist) for screening spatial works; Kim Byung-kwan for helping present works; and Lee Jung-joo and Lee Mi-jung for translating relevant texts. I would like to express my regrets for works not to chosen for the festival, but I look forward to seeing them at a festival next year.
