묵음黙音의 조건 ● 좋은 소리는 마음을 다스린다. 듣기 좋은 말소리가 그러하고, 조화로운 음악소리가 그러하다. 안타까운 것은, 살면서 좋은 소리만 들으며 늘 마음이 평화로울 순 없다는 사실이다. 그보다 훨씬 자주 우리는 소음에 시달리며 거의 늘상 마음은 어지럽다. 평범한 사람이 마음을 평정한 상태로 유지하기란 매우 어려운 일인데도 모든 사람들은 평정심을 원한다. 이일우의 신작 『침묵의 소리』는 다양한 정서 상태를 보여주는 인물들을 다루었다. 그의 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 슬픔, 분노, 좌절과 같은 강한 정서적 표현을 적극적으로 드러내는데, 이는 현대 인물사진에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 모호하고 애매한 표정이나 제스처와는 확연하게 차별화된 모습이다. 그런데, 사람보다 더 눈길을 끄는 것이 배경이다.

사진의 배경은 바닷가임을 짐작케 하는 단서들을 지니고 있지만 구체적이지 않다. 수평선이 정확하게 가로로 놓이도록 일관성을 유지하면서 인물이 상세히 보이게 노출을 조절하다보니 하늘과 바다는 그야말로 배경일 뿐 현실적인 이야기를 끌어낼만한 구체성은 최소화되었다. 한적한 바닷가는 등장인물들이 평정심을 잃게 된 일상의 장면들과 분리된 어떤 장소의 상징이다. 다른 사람을 의식하지 않고 자신의 정서를 표출할 수 있는 곳, 그래서 평정심으로 돌아갈 수 있는 이상적이며 한시적인 공간을 상징하는 것이다.

절제된 자연 풍경은 시간을 압축하는 효과가 있다. 오랜 시간을 품고 있는 자연은 보편성과 맞물려 있다. 개개인의 등장인물이 그토록 힘겹게 토로하고 있는 구구절절한 이야기들을 일일이 열거하지 않고도 그것이 모든 사람에게 보편적인 고통이라는 사실을 공감시키는 맥락이 되는 것이다. 그리하여 우리는 그들의 사연에 귀를 기울이게 된다.

그들은 서로 다른 옷차림, 서로 다른 자세, 서로 다른 표정으로 서로 다른 정서, 서로 다른 삶의 무게를 보여준다. 사진 속 인물들을 변별시키는 힘은 정서로부터 나온다. 정서란 본디 외부의 자극을 통해서 추론되고 촉발되는 특징을 지니므로, 그들의 정서에는 사연이 담겨있을 것이다. 우리는 작품에 등장하는 인물들이 드러내는 정서반응을 보면서 처음엔 그 이야기를 궁금해 하기도 하고 그 다음엔 그들의 정서 상태에 공명하기도 한다. 정서적 공명이 일어나는 것은 그들의 정서를 거울처럼 비춰내는 것과는 다르다. 우리들 각자 자신의 마음속에 누구에게도 쉽게 털어놓기 힘들어 숨겨둔 사연으로부터 불러일으켜지는 것이기 때문이다.

현실에서 다른 사람의 강한 정서 반응을 관찰하는 것은 드문 일일 뿐 아니라 심리적인 부담도 크다. 하지만 작품 속 인물들은 소리를 내지 않는다. 나는 그들에게 아무 것도 해줄 필요가 없다. 그래서인지 묵음黙音 상태로 울려오는 그들의 고통은 쉽게 나의 것이 된다. 내 안에 깊숙이 눌러왔던 희노애락애오욕喜怒哀樂愛惡慾의 소리가 공명한다. 때론 침묵이 어떠한 소리보다 절실하게 느껴지는 건 딱 그만큼의 인간적인 이유이다. ■ 신수진

The Reason Why We Keep Silent ● A good sound, an agreeable voice, and harmonious music bring peace to our minds. Regrettably however, we cannot live, hearing only good sounds, and always remaining in a peaceful state. We much more often suffer from noise, and our minds are always disturbed. Although it is very difficult to find peace of mind everyone seeks it. ● Lee Il-woo's recent work The Sound of Silence addresses figures in various emotional states. Obviously different from contemporary figure photographs featuring ambiguous, vague gestures and expressions, his figures reveal intense emotional expressions such as sorrow, anger, and frustration. More eye-catching than the figures is his work's backdrop. The backdrop seems to be a seashore, but appears insubstantial and unclear. As Lee tried to put the horizon in the center and adjust exposures to makefigures look vivid, the sky and sea appear vague. A sequestered seaside is a symbol for a place separated from the everyday world that causes us lose our tranquil mind. This place is suggestive of an ideal, temporal space where we express our emotions without considering others, and thus return to a state of tranquility and peace. ● Tempered natural scenery seems to compress time. The timelessness of nature is associated with universality. There is the context in each individual's narratives that make us sympathize what they suffered is pain universal for all. We thus pay attention to what they narrate. Each individual shows diverse emotions and lives in different garments, gestures, and expressions. The figures in his photographs are distinguishable form others with their emotions. Emotions are usually triggered by external stimuli. We react to the figures'emotional response, and sympathize with their emotional states. Our emotional sympathy with them is not a reaction to their emotionalresponse but an evocation of our own narratives. ● It is rare to observe others' strong emotional responses, and it is somewhat burdensome. Figures in his work make no sound. There is no need to do something for them. Their pain in silence becomes my own. The sound of joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure, shame, and disgrace resonate within me. Silence sometimes sounds much more beautiful than any sound. ■
