樂! 樂! 樂! ● 여기저기에 언뜻언뜻 낯익은 동물들, 친숙한 만화와 영화 속 주인공들이 보이고 저 한 쪽에 어렴풋이 보이는 것은 엉뚱하다 싶지만 앉아 있는 모습이 영락없는 불상이다. 이들이 어떻게 한자리에 모였을까? 자못 그 이유가 궁금해져 좀 더 가까이 가 그들의 이야기를 들어보고 싶어진다. 樂_新선인의 新풍류 ● 불상인줄 알았는데 가까이 가서 보니 빨간색 쫄바지를 입은 백수 청년이 조그마한 나무의자에 앉아있다. 가지런한 눈썹, 지그시 감은 두 눈과 두터운 귓불, 우아한 손짓, 반가부좌의 자세는 반가사유상의 그것과 닮아 있다. 하지만 그의 귓불엔 반짝이는 귀걸이가 우아한 손 끝에는 달콤한 막대사탕이 들려있고 그는 손에 든 사탕에 살짝 혀를 내밀어 맛을 보고 있다(「반가감유상 半跏甘惟像」). 명상을 하듯 지그시 감은 두 눈은 사탕의 그 달콤함을 음미하고 있는 것이며 반가부좌를 틀고 앉은 곳은 연화대 대신 단순한 형태의 나무로 된 꼬마의자이다. 유려한 날개 짓의 우아한 학의 등에 올라타 하늘의 기운을 만끽하고 있는 이(「승학선인 乘鶴仙人」)는 한 손에 번쩍이는 배달가방을 들고 다른 한 손으로 오토바이 핸들을 잡고 보란 듯이 곡예 하듯 도로를 질주하던 중고생 '철가방'들 중 하나다. 차들 사이를 요리조리 빠져나가 듯 달리며 경적을 울려대던 오토바이가 순백색의 학이 되자 질주 본능으로 위태로워 보이던 '철가방'은 만면에 웃음을 가득 안고 선인이 된 양 발아래 세상을 내려다보고 있다. 종교적인 의미를 덜어내더라도 반가사유상에 대해 우리는 정적이고 사색적이며 뭔지 모를 범접할 수 없는 분위기를 느끼게 된다. 학이라는 새에 대해서도 신선과 짝을 이루어 생각할 정도로 다른 새들과는 차별되는 격을 인정한다. 백민준의 작품은 언뜻 보면 부처의 손에 사탕을 들리고 옛 그림 속 승학선인의 손에 철가방을 들린 것으로 생각하기 쉽지만 그는 청년 백수에게서 반가사유상의 반가와 사유를 철가방에게서 학과 신선의 풍류를 끄집어낸다. 세상의 시스템 안에서 자신의 자리를 찾지 못하거나 밀려나 자신의 존재감을 드러낼 수 있는 자리를 다시 찾고자 노력하는 '백수'와 책과 씨름하며 학업에 몰두하는 학생의 신분 대신 오토바이와 함께하는 아르바이트에 집중하는 '철가방'은 우리가 알고 있는 인간 세상을 떠나 자연과 벗하여 사는 선인(仙人)이나 종교적 수도자에서 한참 빗겨나 있다. 그러나 구인 사이트를 뒤지다 지쳐 집어 문 사탕의 단맛에 빠져 그것을 음미하며 잠시 그 동안의 고민을 모두 내려 놓고 자신의 현실에서 벗어날 수 있는 무아도취 백수와 곡예질주와 스피드로 도로 위에서 오토바이와 자신의 일체감에 몰입해 무아지경에 있는 철가방의 모습에서 새로운 의미의 선인, 새로운 의미의 풍류를 읽어내는 樂! 이것이 바로 우리가 고달프다고 말하는 현실 속에서 그리고 관심을 두지 않거나 무시해 버리기 쉬운 소소한 대상에서 즐거움을 찾아내는 백민준 식의 풍류이다.

樂_新선놀음을 즐기다 ● 백민준은 그의 관심이 미치는 주변의 것들에 신선(神仙)의 격(格)을 부여하고 이름을 붙여 新선인을 창조해 낸다. 그의 손끝에서 새롭게 태어난 선인들의 모습들이 흥미롭고 그 신선(新仙)들의 이름 또한 외양 못지않게 보는 이의 호기심을 자극하는 요소가 있다. 이는 각 신선들의 이름을 쫓아가 보면 작가가 각각의 대상에 걸맞게 부여하는 격의 방식과 이야기들을 유추해 볼 수 있을 것만 같기 때문이다. 긴 날개 옷을 휘날리고 양쪽에 분홍, 노랑 꽃들을 흩날리며 자유로이 하늘을 날고 있는 것은 「익희 翼嬉」라 불린다. 분명, 큰 머리에 긴 팔을 흐느적거리며 짧은 다리로 느리게 걷고 꼬마 친구들과 자전거에 올라타 하늘을 날던 영화 속 E.T이다. 아이들을 공중으로 날아오르게 했던 E.T가 이번엔 익희가 되어 날아 올랐다. E.T가 익희로 분 하는데 작가는 비천(飛天)의 깃옷을 가져왔다. 그는 외계에서 와 지구의 어린이들과 우정을 나누는, 괴상한 외모에 무기력해 보이는 E.T에게 하늘에 살면서 하계사람과 왕래한다는 비천의 이야기를 끌어들여 날개 옷(翼)을 입고 비상을 즐기는(嬉) 익희라는 신선(新仙)으로 만들었다. 디즈니 만화 속에서 쉴새없이 움직이며 쫑알대던 말썽꾸러기 미키마우스는 작가에게서 작은 바람에도 흔들리는 댓잎을 넘겨받고 「희풍 戱風」이 되었다. 지긋이 눈을 감고 바위에 올라 앉아 사색에 잠겨있는 품이 마치 동양화 속 바위에 걸터앉아 주변 풍치를 즐기는 신선과 같은데 이는 종래에 볼 수 없었던 미키마우스의 모습이다. 과거부터 지금까지 전 세계에서 활동하고 있는 디즈니 만화 영화의 대표적인 캐릭터가 백민준의 눈에는 너무도 피곤해 보였나 보다. 작가는 그에게 휴식을 주고 바람(風)을 느끼며 가지고 놀(戱) 수 있도록 대나무 잎 하나를 그의 손가락 위에 살짝 올려주었고 그는 기꺼이 그 유희를 만끽하고 있는 듯하다. 어려서부터 보아온 외국 영화와 만화의 캐릭터에 자신이 갖고 있는 감성과 상상력을 깃옷과 작은 댓잎 하나로 연결시키는 백민준의 樂은 단순한 기지나 재치, 유머를 너머 그들을 신선(新仙)으로 만들고 그들에게 경험해 보지 못한 신선놀음의 맛을 그리고 그들을 바라보는 관람객에게 새로운 신선놀음을 청한다.

樂_1막 1장 ● 내가 백민준을 처음 만났을 때 그는 조그마한 초콜렛볼 상자 안에 조심스럽게 담겨있던 '알'을 들고 있었다. 깨진 달걀 껍데기처럼 생긴 조그마한 방 안에는 그림이 그려져 있고 주인 없는 목마가 놓여있었다. 그 작은 작품을 보면서 작고 오목한 그 공간 안에서 얼마 전까지 홀로 목마를 다듬고 있었을 것 같은 작가가 그 방에서 나와 어떤 이야기를 세상에 내놓을지 궁금하고 기대가 되었다. 남들보다 조금은 늦은 이번 첫 개인전에서 그는 본인의 樂으로 엮어낸 이야기를 전시장에 풀어 놓는다. 드디어 그가 자신만의 세계에서 나와 소통을 시도한다. 자신의 樂을 조그마한 방에서 혼자 즐기던 놀이에서 함께 즐기는 놀이터로 옮겨왔다. 자신의 기억과 일상 속 대상들을 독특한 감성과 이야기의 얼개로 만들어낸 신선(新仙)들이 흥을 돋우며 그의 新선놀이 1막 1장이 관객들 앞에 펼쳐진다. 그의 이야기를 듣고 작품들이 만들어지는 과정을 가까이서 지켜본 기획자로서 그 만큼이나 관객의 반응이 궁금하다. 그리고 누구보다 먼저 작품을 만나는 행운을 가졌던 한 명의 관객으로서 그의 2장, 3장…2막, 3막…으로 끝없이 이어질 다음이 기대되고 기다려진다. ■ 송희정

Pleasure! Pleasure! Pleasure! (樂! 樂! 樂!) There are familiar-looking animals and characters from the well-known animation and movie here and there. However, a strange object in a sedentary position that is seen vaguely at one corner looks exactly like a Buddhist statue. How can all of these be gathered at one place? I become curious about the reason and go closer to them to hear their stories. ● Pleasure_New Pleasure of New Hermits However, with a closer look, the statue turns out to be a young jobless man, wearing red stretch pants and sitting on a tiny wooden chair. Tidied-up eyebrows, gently closed eyes, thick earlobes, elegant hand movement and half-lotus posture resemble a Buddhist statue seated in traditional half-lotus position for meditation. And yet the earrings are glittering in his ears, a sweet lollipop is held in his hand and he is sticking out his tongue to taste it 'The Bodhisattva Enjoying Lollipop, 半跏甘惟像'. His closed eyes as if he was meditating indicate that he is enjoying the sweet taste of the candy and where he is sitting on is a tidy little chair made of wood in simple shape instead of a lotus seat. A person on a crane flapping wings who embraces the energy from the sky 'Riding the Crane, 乘鶴仙人' is one of those students dashing along the road to deliver Chinese food with a sparkling metal bag in one hand and the motorcycle's handlebar in another hand as if showing off in a circus show. When the motorcycle going between cars while honking the horn transforms into the white crane, the delivery boy looks down the world under his feet with a broad smile on his face as if he became a Taoist hermit. Aside from religious meaning, the statue in half-lotus position gives us tranquil and contemplative impressions, in which we even dare not approach. In addition, the crane is recognized as a sacred bird (distinguished from other birds) that goes hand in hand with the hermit. At a glance, Min June Baik's works show the Buddha with a candy in his hand and a Taoist hermit riding on a crane from a traditional painting who holds a metal delivery bag in his hand. However, the artist draws the half-lotus posture and meditation from the young jobless man, and the crane and the pleasure of the hermit from the delivery boy. 'The jobless boy' who tries to reclaim his position within a worldly system where he was unable to find his own place and pushed back, and 'the delivery boy' riding on a motorcycle who works part time instead of dedicating to study as a student are far from the Taoist hermit who lives apart from the human world and in harmony with nature or a religious ascetic. And yet, from the images of the jobless who is tired of finding job openings on the Internet and enjoys the sweet taste of a candy, leaving his worries behind and self-absorbed apart from reality, and the delivery student who finds himself incorporated with the motorcycle in the circus-like ride and speed on the road, the artist draws the hermit and pleasure in a new sense! This is the art of Min June Baik who seeks pleasure from trivial subjects that can be often overlooked and ignored in our harsh reality. ● Pleasure_Enjoy New Pleasure The artist upgrades the class (level) of surrounding objects of his interest to that of Taoist hermits, name them and create new hermits. The images of the hermits who are reborn in his hands are interesting and their names also attract people's curiosity together with their appearances. This is because their names may allow us to infer the method and stories applied by the artist according to each object. The object flying freely in the sky in long wing-like clothes and scattering pink and yellow flowers at both ends is 'Enjoying Flying, 翼嬉'. Apparently, this is E.T. with a big head in a movie that walks slowly with short legs and wavering long arms and flies in a bicycle with his little friends. E.T. that lifted his little friends up is now flying up into the sky as Enjoying Flying. To transform E.T. into Enjoying Flying, the artist brought the wing clothing from the Heavenly Maid. In other words, by bringing a myth of the Heavenly Maid who lives in heaven but meet people on earth, he changed the strange- and helpless-looking E.T. that shares friendship with children into a new hermit named Enjoying Flying wearing 'wing clothing (翼)' and experiencing 'joy (嬉)' of flying. A trouble maker, Mickey Mouse, who endlessly moves and chatters in Disney animated films was transformed into 'Playing with Wind, 戱風' with a bamboo leaf waving in the breeze which was handed over from the artist. The posture of sitting on a rock with eyes closed for meditation is reminiscent of a hermit who appreciates surrounding sceneries on a rock in an Oriental painting. This is an unusual Mickey Mouse. The most famous cartoon character that has been engaged in activities around the world until now since its debut seemed to be very tired to the eyes of Min June Baik. The artist gave him rest and a bamboo leaf softly on his finger to feel 'the wind (風)' and 'joy (戱)' and, in turn, Mickey appears to enjoy the pleasure willingly. Min June Baik's pleasure of linking his own emotions and creativity towards the Western animation and character that he has watched since his childhood with the wing clothing and tiny bamboo leaf generated new hermits beyond simple wit and humor, brought them new pleasure of a solitary life that they have never experienced before, and invite the audiences to enjoy such a new pleasure while watching the new creations. ● Pleasure_Act 1, Scene 1 When I first met Min June Baik, he was holding 'an egg' nestled softly in a small chocolate box. A tiny room that looked like a broken egg shell was painted and had a wooden horse without an owner. While looking at the small artwork, I had expectations for stories that the artist would unfold after getting out of the oval room where he seemed to trim the horse alone a while ago. In his first solo exhibition that is somewhat belated compared to other artists, he unfolds his stories woven with his own 'pleasure'. Finally, he comes out of his own world and attempts communication with the outer world. His own 'pleasure' was transferred from 'his private room (art studio)' for his own enjoyment to 'the playground (exhibition hall)' for playing together. The beauty of the subjects in his memories and daily life was enhanced by the new Taoist hermits created out of his unique emotions and stories. And Act 1, Scene 1 of his new hermit play begins in front of the audience. As the curator who listened to his stories and watched the process of his artwork, I am eager to know the audience's reaction as much as the artist. Moreover, more than anyone else I expect and look forward to his next stories that would lead to Scene 2 and 3 … and to Act 2 and 3 … and continue forever. ■ Heejung Song
