Twelve Faces 구조 - 형태와 수학 ● 이번 전시에서 프린트워크와 조각을 통해 처음으로 선보이는 3개의 조형물을 포함한 Twelve Faces 시리즈는 수학적, 기하학적 구조에 대한 나의 관심을 반영하고, 그로부터 영향을 받은 형태들을 탐구하는 프로젝트이다. 나는 플라톤의 구조, 아르키메데스 구조, 카탈로니아 구조, 그리고 존슨 구조의 무한한 형태의 입체 중에서 규칙적이고, 불규칙적인 구조에 근거한 열두 개의 면을 가지고 있는 기하학적인 오브제를 3D 모델링 소프트웨어를 통해 만들어낸다. 기하학 구조를 가지고 있는 오브제들은 미학과 수학의 관계에 대한 나의 관심을 나타내주고 있으며, 이는 아름답고 복잡한 기하학 형태를 여러 가지 변형된 모습으로 제작했던 르네상스 시대의 예술가들로부터 받은 영향이라 할 수 있다. Twelve Faces는 첨단 테크놀로지를 도구로 삼아 고전의 기하학과 수학의 미학에 접근하는 나의 해석을 보여준다.

테크놀로지와 재료 ● 나는 오브제와 이미지 제작을 위해 컴퓨터뿐만 아니라 다른 첨단 디지털 테크놀로지들을 이용하고 있다. Rapid Prototyping (3차원 고속 성형기) 테크놀로지는 내가 선호하는 도구이며, 그 중에서도 특히 Special plaster 와 Ink jet system을 결합시킨 Z-corp 프린터로 작업하는 것을 좋아한다. 조형물 제작에 이용되는 Rapid Prototyping기술, 그리고 프린트워크에 이용하는 Flatbed print는 한 주제에 대한 두 가지 다른 형태 (평면과 입체)의 재현기술이지만, 이들은 모두 고전적인 잉크젯 프린팅 방식에서 비롯된 테크놀로지들로 이는 한 주제에서 파생된 두 가지 표현 방식간의 연계성을 보여준다.

라벨 ● 프린트워크에서 눈에 띄는 곳에 위치한 라벨은 여러 곳으로부터 영감을 받았다. 첫 번째는 산업제품의 포장에 있는 라벨이고, 둘째는 원소주기율표의 구조 , 세 번째는 동양화에서 서명으로 사용되는 낙관으로, 나는 각각의 프린트에 이 세 가지의 요소를 모두 포함한 고유의 라벨을 만들어 부여하였다. 라벨의 왼쪽에 있는 3개의 번호는 면, 각, 꼭지점의 개수로 기하학적 조형물의 형태를 설명해준다. 그리고 바코드는 조형물의 유형의 이름을 이야기 한다. 한편, 라벨의 오른쪽에는 연도와 월, 그 달에 그 작품이 몇 번째로 만들어진 것인지에 대한 숫자가 표기되어있다. 산업 제조공정에서 이용되는 이 라벨은 본래 기능인 제품의 표식이라는 기능 이외에도 나의 내가 서명을 할 수 있는 공간으로 이용함으로써 예술 작품의 공산품화를 보여주는 기능도 가지게 된다. ■ 요아킴 바인홀트

Some notes on the "twelve faces" series ● Constructionㅡ Shape & Math ● The „twelve faces" series – of which the first three objects are here represented by printworks and sculptures for the first time – is again a project that reflects my interest in shapes, that are inspired by geometric solids. Basing on the regular and irregular solids of Platonic-, Archimedean-, Catalan- and Johnson-solids I develop these sculptures with a 3D modeling software. It will only contain geometric solids of the above mentioned that have twelve faces. My work with geometrical solids represents my interest in the relations between aesthetics and mathematics. It is therefore evidently inspired by artists of the Renaissance that produced beautiful and complex drawings of geometrical shapes in many variations. „Twelve Faces" is my approach to reflect on the art of that kind by using contemporary technologies as a mirror. Technology & Material ● Using the computer for my sculptures and images I am consequently using other digital technologies for the realization of my work. Rapid Prototyping (and –manufacturing) technologies are therefore my preferred tool. Usually I am working with a Z-corp Printer, that binds a powder of a special plaster with an ink-jet system. The rapid prototyping technology with which the objects are realized and the flatbed print-technology that I use for the printwork are both basing on the principle of inkjet-printing. This is another relation between the two representations of the shapes, which I develop digitally. Label ● The Label that has a so prominent place in the printworks has several sources of inspiration. The first to mention are the Labels on the wrapping of industrial goods, secondly the list of the periodical system of the elements and as the third the seals that are used in oriental paintings to sign them. In my prints I am using functions of all these sources to individualize the single prints. The three numbers on the left side of the label describe the type of geometrical object by its number of faces, edges and vertices. The barcode is basing on the name of the type. On the right side of the label the year and month and the number of the picture related to the month are mentioned. The prints of this series are again unique. Similar to the function of such labels in the industrial production process they serve here also as the place for my signature. ■ JOACHIM WEINHOLD
