아름다움을 머금은 진한 페이소스 ● 어린소녀가 석양이 지는 마을의 어느 집 옥상에 앉아 비눗방울을 불고 있다. 그런데 비눗방울을 불고 있는 순수한 아이의 모습에서 천진함 대신 애틋함이 느껴지는 이유는 무엇일까? 그것은 소녀를 비추고 있는 석양의 빛 때문이다. 작가는 세상의 모든 빛은 어둠을 밝힘과 동시에 기쁨과 환희, 슬픔과 애잔함까지 그 고유의 감정을 가지고 있기 때문에 자신은 그저 빛이 가진 고유의 감정을 시각화시켜 캔버스에 옮겨 담는데 충실할 뿐이라고 했다.

"せつない(세츠나이)" 작가는 자신의 작업에 대해 이야기하면서 유독'せつない'라는 말을 자주 사용했다. 'せつない'는 '애잔함', '애틋함', '안타까움'등등 단순히 언어로 정의하지 못할 다양한 감정을 표현하는 단어이지만 작가는 말과 글로 자신의 작업을 설명하기보다 관객 스스로 눈이 아닌 가슴으로 느낄 수 있는'せつない'를 그리고 싶어 했다.

화가인 동시에 조각가인 '오하타 신타로'의 작업은 '빛'을 주제로 처음부터 끝까지 오랜 시간 수작업을 통해 완성되기에 아날로그적 감성이 깊게 스며있는 동시에 제작방식 또한 상당히 독특하다. 작가는 캔버스에 빛을 담은 풍경을 그리고 강화스티로폼 위에 색을 입힌 화지(일본종이)를 일일이 붙여가며 인물을 조각한다. 이렇게 완성된 빛의 풍경(회화)속으로 사람(조각)이 들어가면서 이루어지는 2차원과 3차원의 조합은 관객으로 하여금 마치 작품 속 인물과 함께 같은 공간에서 같은 감정을 싣고 서 있는 것과 같은 생생한 현장감을 불어 넣고 있는 것이다. ■ 갤러리 포월스

Deep Pathos Soaked with Beauty ● In the evening at sunset, a girl sitting on the one's roof is blowing bubbles. But, why do we feel grief instead of innocence from this girl? That might be because of the light from sunset that shines her. Since all the lights include indigenous emotions such as pleasure, joy, sorrow and grief, while it also shines darkness, the artist says that he focuses on visualizing the indigenous emotions into the canvas. ● "せつない(Setsunai)" The artist mainly uses the word 'せつない'while explaining his works. 'せつない'cannot be translated into a word as it includes different emotions such as "grief," "sorrow," "pity." Nevertheless, the artist wants to create 'せつない'that the viewers can feel with their heart instead of eyes, without any explanations. ● The works by Shintaro OHATA, a sculptor and painter, involve in deep "analogue" emotions in the theme of "lights" whilst the time-consuming process of creation is also unusually fascinating. They are meticulously created by hands from the beginning to the end. Ohata paints a landscape that reflects lights on a canvas and sculpts a figure by pasting colored Japanese papers onto the reinforced Styrofoam. Using the combination of two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements, with a figure (sculpture) in a landscape of lights (painting), Ohata invites the viewers to experience the same emotions in the same space, with the figure in his dramatic work. ■ GALLERY 4WALLS
