조각조각 색깔풍경

매일 바라보는 주변의 풍경이 새로운 일상이 되어 나의 감각을 자극한다. 길을 걷고 있던 그 어느 순간의 황홀한 빛과 바람의 감촉이 온 몸을 통과하여 조각 조각 아름다운 색으로 나부끼는 듯하다. 조각보를 바라볼 때 마다 떨리던 나의 감정을 색채 풍경으로 나타내는 작업이 현재 내가 하고 있는 풍경 작업이다. ● 전통 조각보 방식의 바느질 작업을 시작으로 색색의 조각천을 풍경으로 이어간다. 조각풍경은 늘 미묘하게 변화하는 과거와 현재, 시간과 공간을 이어주는 매개가 된다. 풍경은 늘 같은 모습으로 존재하는 듯 보이지만 변화를 지속하고 있다. 때론 지극히 단순하고 복잡한 도시 풍경이 익숙한 듯 하면서도 낯선 이미지로 다가온다. 특별히 아름답지도 감동적이지도 않은 장소를 선택한 풍경작업들은 현재의 일상적이고 반복적인 시간의 흔적들을 기록하고 싶은 나의 욕망에 기인한 것이지만 이 낯선 흔적들은 어느 순간 전통조각보가 보여준 그 격조 높은 감각과 조화의 느낌을 닮아가는 것이 되었다. 언젠가 세련된 색상과 면 분할, 빼어난 구성미를 보여준 조각보에 대한 기억이 도시풍경을 색채와 감각의 구조물로 바라보게 하였다.

내 작업의 시작은 조각천을 모으고 꿰매는 바느질로부터 시작된다. 색색의 자투리 천을 서로 맞대어 바늘땀이 보이도록 촘촘하게 꿰매주는 감침질과 색실을 이용한 장식은 전통 조각보의 방식을 그대로 따르고 있다. 조각보가 가진 기하학적인 패턴의 아름다움, 현대적인 색채감각은 다양한 재질의 섬유가 주는 편안함과 친화력으로 극대화된다. 색채를 최대한 다양하고 풍부하게 사용하고 섬유가 가진 질감적인 요소를 살림으로서 새롭고도 보편적인 아름다움을 전달하고자 한다. 오랜 노동을 수반하는 전통적인 방식을 기본으로 한 작업이지만 조각보가 주는 즐거움과 조각천을 잇는 과정을 통해 공간과 시간의 궤적을 따라간다. ● 완성된 조각보는 배접의 과정을 거쳐 다시 해체된다. 조각보를 다시 자르고 붙이는 꼴라주 방식은 해체와 반복, 재구성되는 이미지들로 공간의 리얼리티를 낯선 풍경으로 다가오게 하고자 하는 의도에서 비롯된 것이다. 조각보를 해체하는 것은 허무한 일이지만 새로운 이미지의 구축을 위해 스스로를 위안한다. 그리고 일상적인 풍경들을 느린 시간의 흐름을 간직한 낯선 풍경으로 나타낸다.

친숙한 풍경에서 오는 이질감, 인적을 빼버린 풍경에서 오는 쓸쓸함, 그러나 담담하고 아름다운 색채풍경은 시간의 조각에 의해 메워지는 '바로 지금 여기'의 시간인 것이다.

나의 작업은 전통 조각보의 방식과 현대적인 풍경이미지의 조합을 통해 공간속에서 시간성을 포착하고 새로운 공간표현의 확장을 시도하고자 하는 것으로부터 시작되었다. 조각조각 색채들의 조합으로 표현된 대상은 현실을 새롭고도 낯설게 만나게 하였고 평면성을 더 풍부한 색채풍경으로 만들어 내었다. ● 전통 조각보 방식과 회화의 융합에 있어 일상의 담담한 풍경을 나만의 색채언어로 추구해본다. ■ 제미영

Colorful Scene Piece by Piece ● A new reality-world is displayed by dual senses of sight and touch in the usual scene. Colorful pieces of cloth make the scene of the current real world, which are prepared by the traditional needle-work. The scene by colorful pieces becomes the medium of the space and time between the past and present. The scene has the slight change continuously as I have the different senses and feelings each time. The perception of the changes of the invisible space and time leads the blend and compromise of theirself. The complicated cityscape looks like the simple one and the familiar scene feels one of strange images. The ordinary objects, which is not specially wonderful scene but common scene, are recorded as the traces of usual and repetitive time. ● My work starts with collecting pieces of cloth and sewing them. Hemming and the decoration of colorful threads purely follow the tradition. The beauty of geometrical patterns of the pieces and modernistic sense of color are maximized by comfortableness of fiber of various materials and their affinity. I intend to deliver a new and universal beauty by making the most use of rich and various colors and expressing texture-elements of fiber to the maximum. The work should be accompanied by a hard labor when following its tradition, but the pleasure from the patchwork itself and the process to connect the pieces together could be a course that follows space and time. The finish from a long hardworking is again dismantled by the piece-folding process. The collage where wrapping of cloth is again cut and attached is an image reconstructed by disassembly and repetition, and which makes the reality of space an unfamiliar scene. The futility of such dismantlement is given comfort for the construction of a new image. And ordinary landscape appears as an unfamiliar one which keeps a slow flow of time in it. Feeling foreignness from a familiar landscape, loneliness from the scene absent of the trace of human beings but serene and beautiful colors, the landscape is the time which is filled up by the scraps of the past time at the very moment. The combination of the traditional wrapping cloth style with modern image of landscape catches time in space and tries to expand itself as a new space expression. The product made of each piece of colors has us face our reality in a new and unfamiliar way and makes a two-dimensional planeness a scene of more rich colors. I try to pursue an ordinary calm scene with my own colorful language in the combination. ■ Je Mi Young
