이토록 뜨겁고 황홀한 만남

2010 오픈스페이스 배 국제 레지던스 프로그램 'Open to You'-이토록 뜨겁고 황홀한 만남 ● 오픈스페이스 배는 여타의 미술관련 공간과 달리 부산의 거의 끝자락 일광산 중턱에 자리하고 있다. GPS로도 찾기가 거의 불가능할 만큼 오지에 미술관련 공간이 있다는 것이 믿기지 않을 만큼 그 환경과 위치가 어쩌면 처음 방문한 이에게는 충격일 수 도 있다. 문명의 것들이 드물 것 같은 곳에 자리하고 있다는, 이러한 환경적 특성은 오픈스페이스 배로서는 접근성의 제약이라는 큰 단점만이 아닌 여타의 공간과 다른 오픈스페이스 배만의 개성과 정체성을 이야기하는 긍정적 방향으로의 변화를 노력하였다. 그러한 노력들이 작년 레지던스 프로그램을 통해 어느 정도 구체화 하였고 또 올해 역시 이러한 노력들이 지속적으로 하고 있다.

오픈스페이스 배의 2009년 레지던스 프로그램은 최장 6개월 동안 입주가 가능하였고 또 상, 후반기로 구분되었으나 2010년 프로그램은 최장 3개월 및 분기 구분 없이 5~9월 사이에 거주가 가능하도록 되었다. 이는 작년 프로그램에서 발견된 단점들을 극복하고 또 작가들 간의 소통의 밀도를 높이기 위해 좀 더 짧고 빡빡한 일정으로 구성된 것이다. 또한 작년의 그것은 작가들만을 대상으로 공모를 하였으나 올해는 세 명의 기획/비평가가 입주하여 시각적 기반을 배경으로 한 것만이 아닌 이론적 배경을 첨가하도록 디자인 된 것이 작년과의 차이라 할 수 있다. 이는 레지던스 프로그램을 통한 새로운 네트워크 형성의 가능성과 서로 다른 위치에서 다른 사회를 이해/소통할 수 있는 역할에 기인한다고 본다.

5월 중순 구인성, 정혜령을 시작으로 올 해의 첫 항해가 시작되었으며, 곧 임현정과 리테쉬 아즈메리가 합세하여 본격적인 모양새를 갖추어 나아갔다. 이들은 2~3개월의 입주기간을 가지며 올해의 대부분의 프로그램을 참여하는 주축 작가들이다. 이후 해외 기획/비평/작가인 우다쿠엔, 슈양, 리춘펑이 참여하였고 각 1개월 혹은 2개월 동안의 거주와 무빙 테이블, 로컬 투 로컬, 문화탐방토론 등의 프로램에 참여한 후 각국으로 돌아갔다. 이후 아마르사이칸 남슬라이자브, 토마스 린드프라이쉬, 마르티나 라페디우스가 합세하여 9월 까지 올해의 프로그램을 함께 이끌어 나아가고 있다. 오픈스페이스 배의 레지던스 프로그램은 작가에게 무료 창작공간을 제공하는 일차적인 목표보다 상호간의 소통을 바탕으로 작가 또는 참여자로 하여금 좀 더 확장된 영역의 미래를 제공하는 것에 큰 목표가 있다고 할 수 있다. 창작 공간을 제공하는 것도 무척 중요한 일이지만 '물리적 공간' 보다 '네트워크 공간'을 제공한다는 것은 장기적 안목을 실현하는 것이다. 레지던스 프로그램이 한때의 유행으로만 치닫지 않기를 바라기에 오픈스페이스 배는 이러한 귀찮은 일을 마다하지 않았는지도 모른다.

오픈스튜디오 'Open to You'는 그간의 정글 속에서 벌어진 좌충우돌의 과정들을 대중과 관련 비평가 기획자들에게 공개하는 자리이다. 물론 올해의 모든 작가들이 참여하는 것이 아닌 현재 거주하는 작가들만 참여한다는 한계는 있지만, 지나간 이들의 흔적을 오픈스페이스 배 곳곳에서 찾을 수 있으며 또 그들의 동료들에게서도 발견 가능할 것이다. 나는 '오픈 스튜디오'라는 행사가 아주 거창하거나 혹은 작가를 광고하는 이벤트로만 나아가는 것을 바라지 않는다. 무더운 여름밤을 짧은 예술에 관한 이야기와 그리고 긴 삶의 주변이야기를 작가들과 함께 어울려 나누고 그리고 다가올 가을에 대해 나즈막이 같이 나누기를 기대한다. ■ 김대홍

Unlike other art-related institutions, OpenSpace Bae is situated halfway up the Mountain Il-Kwang, geographically at the edge of Busan. It is actually unbelievable to have an alternative art space in up-country where can not even be detected by a GPS system. This kind of environment and location may be a shock for first-time visitors. This environmental trait of being located in a desolate mountain path might cause a limitation of the public accessibility. Therefore, Bae put an effort to make a positive change that supports Bae's uniqueness and identity and differs from other art spaces. By making full use of these enthusiasms the systems have been materialized through previous year's Artist-in-Residence program, and we put continuous effort in this year as well. Bae's 2009 Artist-in-Residence program was initially open for artists twice a year with allowance of staying up to six months. However, since 2010 Artist-in-Residence programs the artists could accommodate themselves in Bae Residence between May and September without any specific date-division as well as staying in Bae for a maximum of three months. By doing so, we would be able to strengthen the strength and make up for the weakness through evaluating last year's program. For that very reason we tend to provide a tight schedule in order to make most of every opportunity as well as enhancing the density of communication among artists. Furthermore, three members are newly consisted of art critics and curator in comparison with the last year's program which only called for artists in 2009. The significant difference from the previous program is that the 2010 Artist-in-Residence is designed to utilize theoretical background based on consolidating its visual foundation. We believe that this newly introduced system would be able to play a pivotal role in making a new kind of network as well as understanding and communicating with different societies from various perspectives. The voyage of the 2010 program started with 구인성 and 정혜령 in mid-May followed by the involvement with 임현정 and 리테쉬 아즈메리. These artists are the main artists of the 2010 Artist-in-Residence program who will be participating in most of the programs over the year. They also have right to stay in Bae for two to three months. The art critic/curator- 우다쿠엔, 슈양, 리춘펑 from overseas also participated in this program for one or two months and got involved in several programs(such as moving table, local to local, culture debate) during their stay. After abovementioned artists' leave, 아마르사이칸 남슬라이자브, 토마스 린드프라이쉬, 마르티나 라페디우스 are now joining the program until October. Bae's Artist-in-Residence program holds a prime goal to offer an extended future to artists and participants based on providing an environment for communication as well as making a mutual relationship among them. Although it is crucial to offer a creative space without any condition or profitable purpose on the ground level, we also believe that we should make a long term goal in terms of providing a 'networking space' in realization. We hope not to see the shortage of this kind of residence program in a near future due to current trends. The open studio so-called 'Open to You' is to introduce the episodes happened in Bae to public audiences and critics. Of course we are aware of the limit of inviting and focusing only on currently in-residence artists rather than involving all the artists of the 2010 Residence program. However, we believe that the traces of formerly stayed artists will be found around Bae area as well as through their colleague artists. I do not want that this Bae Program would be understood as a temporary advertising event of artist or a big event. I anticipate sharing our amusing anecdotes and life stories with our fellow artists while enjoying the scent of the upcoming season in quietness. ■ KIMDEAHONG
