회전날개에 의한 죽음과 부활 ● COOP, Inc.은 한국에서 시작된 근거 없는 속설인 "선풍기 사망"에 대해 고찰해 보는 매우 흥미롭고 유쾌한 전시, 회전날개에 의한 죽음과 부활 을 열게 되었다. "선풍기 사망"이란 밀폐된 방에 선풍기를 틀어놓고 자면 질식사 혹은 저체온증으로 사망한다는 것이다. "선풍기 사망"이 설명되는 방식은 다음과 같다: 1. 선풍기의 회전으로 인해 생긴 소용돌이가 방안의 산소를 빨아들인다. 2. 선풍기가 산소 입자를 잘게 부수어 숨쉴 수 있는 공기를 앗아간다. 3. 선풍기가 방안의 온도를 낮춤으로써 저체온증을 일으킨다. 4. 선풍기는 이산화탄소의 농도를 높여 방안의 산소를 대체하게 함으로써 질식사를 유발한다. 한국인 부모에게서 났지만 미국에서 자란 아티스트들은 선풍기의 위험성에 대해 교육받아왔다. 하지만 이제 그들은 그들 세대의 많은 이들이 그렇듯이 선풍기 사망에 대한 경고와 약간의 불안감을 가지고 "선풍기 사망"론에 대해 의혹을 제기하려 한다.

본 전시는 "COOP, Inc."으로 활동하는 임연진(Jean Rim)과 오현경(Katherine Oh)의 인연의 결과물이라 할 수 있다. 두 사람은 미국을 비롯한 여러 나라들을 함께 여행하면서 많은 대화를 나눴고, 특히 현재 거주하고 있는 서울에서 독특한 한국적 현상인 "선풍기 사망(fan death)" 에 대해 관심을 가지게 된다. 이는 본 전시가 생겨나는 바탕이 되었다.

회전날개에 의한 죽음과 부활은 여름을 아무 탈 없이 잘 지낼 수 있도록 선풍기 신(Fan Gods)에게 빌고 이를 축하하는 자리이다. 관객들은 COOP. Inc,의 페인팅, 드로잉, 조소, 설치 등 다양한 훈육 장치를 통해 조심스럽지만 축하하는 여행을 하게 될 것이다. 선풍기 사망에 대한 실제 기사들이 갤러리의 메인 창문에 전시될 것이며, 갤러리 내부 공간은 관객들이 제단과 만다라, 전경기(prayer wheel)를 경험할 수 있는 기발한 사원으로 재탄생될 것이다. Celebration: Saturday, August 28, 2010 (Time, DJ and band to be announced) About the Exhibition ● COOP, Inc. has created an intriguing and amusing exhibition Death and Resurrection by Rotating Blade that explores fan death, an erroneous belief held by Koreans. It is believed that an electric fan left on overnight in a closed room can cause death by suffocation or hypothermia. There are several theories: a vortex is created by the fan and sucks the oxygen from the room; the fan chops up all the oxygen molecules in the air leaving none to breathe; the fan contributes to hypothermia by lowering the room temperature; the fan displaces oxygen and raises the concentration of carbon dioxide gas without affecting the nitrogen gas content, causing asphyxiation. [1] Raised in America as offspring of Korean parents, they were relentlessly cautioned about the perils of the fan. They believed in the warnings and tales with anxiety but began to doubt the theory like many of their generation. ● Death and Resurrection by Rotating Blade is a celebration and offering to the Fan Gods for surviving the summer unscathed. Visitors will journey on a cautionary yet celebratory voyage through COOP's multi-disciplinary practice of painting, drawing, sculpture and installation. Actual reports of fan death will be displayed on the main window of the gallery. The space inside will be transformed into a quirky temple, where visitors can pay homage to the Fan Gods while basking in the virtue of the altars, floor mandala, and prayer wheels. COOP will sleep in an enclosed room with a running fan for one night at Space Hamilton in hopes of debunking the myth of fan death.
