A SECOND NATURE

귀엽고 사랑스러운 애완동물을 바라보다 문득, 그들에 대한 나의 관념이 송두리째 흔들려버리는 순간을 마주하게 되었다. 숨겨진 이면의 것을 깨닫게 되는 순간이 항상 그렇듯, 내가 새로이 발견한 것들은 그것이 마치 더 큰 진실인양 느껴져서, 더 이상 기존에 인식했던 과거의 모습들은 아무런 의미 없는 것들로 남는다. ● 이번 전시에 등장하는 토끼들은 작가가 경험한(그들의 외양과는 사뭇 다른) 이면적인 습성들이 반영되어 있다. 또한 그 이면적인 모습들은 주로 인간의 본능적인 이기심과 매우 닮아있고, 심지어 그들의 외양의 일부인 눈에서 작가는 의중을 알 수 없는 불가사의한 느낌을 받게 되었다. 모른다는 것은 우리에게 일종의 공포와 불안을 느끼게 한다. 우리가 함께 살아가며, 믿고 의지해야 하는 사람들에게서 그것이 느껴질 때, 우리는 그와 독립된 개체일 뿐이라는 불편한 사실을 새삼 인지한다.

토끼들은 매우 독립심이 강하고 생존의 욕구가 강한 생명체이다. 지능이 낮으며, 생존의 욕구가 충족되면 더 이상의 적극적인 활동을 하지 않는다는 점이 인간과의 차이라고 볼 수 있겠다. 그래서 작가는 이 사회화되지 않은, 순수하고 이기적인 욕망덩어리인 동물을 보면서 인간의 내면 깊숙한 곳에서는 이들과 크게 다르지 않은 모습들이 발견될 것이라고 생각하게 되었다. ● 작품에 표현된 토끼들은 보다 많은 사람들이 친근하게 받아들일 수 있도록 하기 위한 소재로 선정되었다는 의미와 온순해 보이는 토끼에 대한 여러 가지 이면적이고 실제적인 이미지를 표현하고자 했다. 토끼의 습성『A second nature : The rabbits』이라는 제목의 전시를 관람하는 동안 그들의 초점 없는 눈동자와 식탐, 다른 개체에 대한 무자비와 같은 이미지들이 작품을 바라보고 있는 인간인 우리들에게는 어떤 의미로 다가오는지 생각해주시길 바란다. ■ 한남수

While looking at cute and lovely pets, the artist has come to realize her conception of animals is a transition. Just like any time one thinks about common things at length, the artist found that there is something going on under the surface. There is something all-consuming and devious, a second nature if you will, about these seemingly benign furry creatures. This new insight seems to be a major and overlooked truth, which evokes a complete paradigm shift in her and perhaps our way of experiencing these adorable and fluffy creatures. ● The creatures from this exhibit reflect this second nature which the artist has attempted to reveal. You are invited to leave your preconceptions behind and experience an inner existence which sometimes seems the opposite of the outward appearances. These characteristics occasionally mirror the inner nature of humanity; selfish and mistrusting. Furthermore it is said that "the eye is the window to the soul", then just what can we see in the eyes of these rabbits. Knowledge of our ignorance of these facets of life make us feel uncomfortable and frightened. We fear the people we live with and rely upon; we suffer greatly in knowing that in the end we all die alone. ● Rabbits are very independent creatures. They have a strong desire for survival. They are animals of low intelligence and are largely inactive when they are in good health, which separates them from you and I. So, while the artist watches these animals, which are uncivilized, innocent, and yet selfish, and full of ambition, she assumes that human beings have little in common with them. The artist wants to stress that rabbits in her artwork stand for symbols that many people can easily relate to. ● She also wants to highlight several opposite aspects of the tamed rabbits and realistic image from them. I hope you have the time to think about this when you look at images such as their unfocused gaze, craving for food, and cruelty to other creatures whilst enjoying the exhibition, entitled "A second nature: The rabbits". ■ HANNAMSU
