Celebration of Girlishness: 소녀 배우기

"소녀배우기" 프로젝트는 소녀라는 상징에 대하여 다소 비판적이거나 아니면 무관심한 여성작가 5명이 소녀시대의 안무를 배우는 적극적 개입의 과정을 담은 퍼포먼스 도큐멘테이션 작업이다. 이 시대에 여성으로서 살면서, 여성성에 대하여 얼마나 생각해 보았는지 특히 모든 여성이 한번쯤 반드시 겪었을 '소녀'에 대하여 어떤 기억과 생각을 가지고 있는지, 이번 프로젝트를 통해서 자문해보는 기회를 삼고자했다. ● 이 전시 기획의 초기에는 남성들의 판타지로서 상품화된'소녀'를 비판하거나, 반대로 자신에게 실종되었을지도 모른다고 가정할 수 있는 소녀적 감성을 생각없이 우상화하는 의도는 배제했다. 다만, 여성이 바라보는'소녀시대'의 몸짓은 왜 사람들을 현혹시키고 그들(특기 남성들)의 마음을 움직이는지 궁금증을 해소해 보고자, 그녀들의 노래와 안무를 모방해보는 방법을 택했다. 프로젝트가 진행되면서 5명의 여성작가들은 작가로서 다른 사람의 작품에 출연하는 것/ 여성으로서 '소녀시대'에 대한 생각/ 프로젝트 진행 전후 심경변화를 이메일을 통해 서로에게 질문하고 답했다. ● 비디오, 퍼포먼스, 사진 등 다양한 매체를 사용하는 5명의 여성 작가들(김혜지, 박소영, 수니 마코소브, 이유리, 주하영)이 이 전시를 통해서 어색하나마 카메라 뒤에서 앞으로 나와 피사체로 참가해 주었고, 독자적인 작품세계를 잠시 떠나 작가로서/여성으로서/동지로서/다른 생각을 가진 인간으로서 서로에 대한 이해도를 넓힐 수 있는 기회가 되었다. ■ 벡터 스페이스

Celebration of Girlishness: 소녀 배우기_퍼포먼스_00:02:10

The project, "Celebration of Girlishness" is a performance documentation by five female artists who are somewhat skeptical of or disinterested in the notion of "girlishness" as it is often portrayed in Korean media.  These artists learned the choreography of a popular Korean female pop music group, "Girls' Generation," and documented their final performance by video. This project attempts to encourage us to question what it means to be women, to reassess how we think about the notion of feminine at this current time.  Also, it is an attempt to revisit the memory of being girls. ● From the early days of planning, the project was lead with open-mindedness by maintaining a distance from criticism on male fantasy-based, commercialized notion of "girls".  At the same time, we attempted not to idealize the notion of innocent "girls" based on individual nostalgia. Instead, the project tried to question why people, especially men, are mesmerized and seduced by the dance movements of the "Girls' Generation" by the artists mimicking the very same dance movements.  As the project progressed, the participating artists questioned each other through an email 'Q&A relay' and documented how their thoughts &feelings have changed. ● Through this project, these five female artists (Heaji Kim, Soyoung Park, Sunee Markosov, Yuri Lee, Hayoung Joo) who work in diverse media – video, performance, photography among others - stood in front of the camera and became subjects.  By leaving their individual art space momentarily, in this project they found an opportunity to expand their understanding of each other as artists, women, colleagues, and as people with different ideas. ■ Vector Space
