IN THE RAGGED MOUNTAINS

풍경의 단면과 부분 ● Armin Hartenstein과 정주영은 그들의 작업에서 공통적으로 풍경을 다루고 있다. 자연과 인간, 풍경과 풍경화에 대한 동서양의 역사적, 회화적 전통의 유사성과 변별점은 두 작가의 작업 속에서 흥미로운 비교를 자아낸다. 독일 뒤셀도르프에서 함께 수학하던 시기부터 풍경의 재현에 대한 공통의 관심사로 교류하던 둘의 작업 여정은 그로부터 일정한 시간을 지나 이번 전시를 통해 한 자리에서 보여 진다. ● Hartenstein은 최근까지 「 Mes Amis de Emmanuel Bove 」 로 명명한 모형과 같은 형태의 작은 오브제 작업을 발전시켜왔는데, 나무판에 정교하게 그려진 바위와 협곡, 분화구의 이미지들은 10~30cm 내외의 작은 크기 속에서 극히 정밀한 풍경의 재구성을 제시한다. 프랑스 작가 Emmanuel Bove의 첫 소설인 『 Mes Amis 』 에서 따온 일련의 작업제목에서 엿보이듯이 그가 참조하고 있는 문학적 상상과 회화-조각으로서의 공명은, 나무판의 잘림과 결을 십분 이용하여 그려진 풍경의 면면들 속에서 그 자체로 놀라운 풍경의 세부를 보여준다. 가상과 실제 풍경의 환영 사이에서 그의 모델과도 같은 미니어처들은 인간과 자연/풍경의 연속성에 대한 서구 인식론과 회화사에 대한 의미 있는 단절로 나타난다. ● 정주영의 작업에서 산의 이미지들은 풍경을 매개로 한 전통에 대한 사유로서 발전되어 왔다. 풍경과 그것의 전형에 대한 회화사적 언급을 통해 정주영은 과거와 현재를 아우르는 풍경 모델의 원형을 그의 산(山) 그림 연작을 통해 환기시키고 있다. ● 자연과 풍경을 바라보는 인간의 시선은 동서양을 막론하고 유구한 것이지만, Hartenstein과 정주영의 작업은 풍경의 전형을 자신의 전통 안에서 다룬다는 점에서 자연과 원형에 대한 각자의 질문과 통찰의 과정을 거치는 듯 보인다. 또한 파편/부분을 통해 전체를 획득하는 시선을 의식한다는 점에서 유사한 지점을 공유한다. 그리하여 그 둘의 작업에서 보이는 풍경의 단면과 부분에 관한 접근을 통해 비로소 풍경은 통합적 시선으로 수렴되는 하나의 총체적 장소로 나타난다.

Sections and Parts of Landscape ● Both artists Armin Hartenstein and Zuyoung Chung deal with landscape in their artworks: similarities and distinctiveness in the historic and pictorial traditions of the West and the East on landscape and landscape paintings invite intriguing comparison of the two artists' works. The two's artistic journey whose encounter had been centered on the common interest in the representation of landscape began from their student years at Düsseldorf, Germany, and their works are presented in this exhibition after some elapse of time since then. ● Hartenstein has developed a series of model-like objects in the group of sculptures entitled "Mes Amis de Emmanuel Bove" till now, where the sophisticatedly depicted images of rocks, canyons and craters on the wooden plate suggest the starkly precise reconfiguration of the landscape in sizes between ten and thirty centimeters. As implied by a series of works whose titles originate from 'Mes Amis,' the first novel by the French writer Emmanuel Bove, the resonance he refers to as literary imagination and painting-sculpture shows the details of the stunning landscape per se in each facet of the landscape portrayed using the cut and grain of the wooden plate. His model-like miniatures in the illusion between the virtual landscape and the actual one are represented as significant chasm on the Western recognition theory and the history of art on the continuity of humans and the nature/landscape. ● Images of mountains in Zuyoung Chung's works have developed as the reasoning on traditions with landscape as the media. By touching upon landscape and the art historical aspect of the landscape model, Zuyoung Chung reminds one of the prototype of the landscape model that transcends the past and the present through her series of paintings on mountains. ● Humans' view on the nature and landscape has been existent for long, be it in the East or the West. Yet, as artworks of Hartenstein and Chung deal with the landscape model are addressed within their traditions, they seem to undergo the process of individual question and insight. They also share commonalities in that they are aware of the view that the whole is acquired through fragments/parts. As such, landscape is represented as a single holistic place where integrated perspectives are converged into one by approaching certain sections and parts in the two's works.

1968년 독일 Schwenningen에서 태어난 Armin Hartenstein은 독일 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트아카데미(Kunstakademie Düsseldorf)에서 Fritz Schwegler교수에게 수학하였다. 주요 개인전으로는 2005년 Armin Hartenstein- tagnachtgleiche, RUZICSKA /// WEISS GALERIE FÜR ZEITGENÖSSISCHE KUNSt, Düsseldorf, 2006년 Armin Hartenstein- Caldera- Galerie Haus Schneider, Uschi Kolb, Karlsruhe, 2010년 Mes Amis de Emmanuel Bove- Neuer Kunstverein Gießen e.v., Gießen과 2010년의 11. Triennale Kleinplastaik - Larger Than Life - Stranger Than Fiction, Fellbach 등 다수의 단체전에 참가하였다. 2010년 국립창동스튜디오 국제 교환 입주 작가로 선정되었다. ● 정주영은 1969년 서울에서 출생, 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과와 독일 쿤스트아카데미 뒤셀도르프(Kunstakademie Düsseldorf), 네덜란드 드 아뜰리에스(De Ateliers)를 졸업하였다. 현재 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형예술과에 재직하고 있다. 1999년 금호미술관에서의 개인전을 비롯해 최근 몽인아트센터에서의 전시 『하나이면서 둘인一而二- The Same Yet Different 』 까지 10회의 개인전을 가진 바 있으며 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다. ■ 갤러리 소소

Armin Hartenstein born in Schwenningen, Germany in 1968, studied under Professor Fritz Schwegler at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany. His major solo exhibitions include the 2005 Armin Hartenstein- tagnachtgleiche, RUZICSKA /// WEISS GALERIE FÜR ZEITGENÖSSISCHE KUNST, Düsseldorf, the 2006 Armin Hartenstein- Caldera- Galerie Haus Schneider, Uschi Kolb, Karlsruhe, the 2010 Mes Amis de Emmanuel Bove- Neuer Kunstverein Gießen e.v., Gießen, and numerous group exhibitions including the 2010 11. Triennale Kleinplastik - Larger Than Life - Stranger Than Fiction, Fellbach. He was also selected as a residency artist in the 2010 international exchange program at the Changdong National Art Studio. ● Zuyoung Chung born in 1969 in Seoul graduated from Seoul National University(BFA in Painting), Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany and De Ateliers in the Netherlands. She is Professor of the School of Visual Arts at Korea National University of Arts. She has held ten solo exhibitions including the one at Kumho Museum of Art in 1999 and the recent one titled "The Same Yet Different" at Mongin Art Center, Seoul and participated in numerous group exhibitions. ■ GALLERY SOSO
