Topsy-Turvy World

연회색의 stucco로 만들어진 다층의 아파트. 중산층의 슬픔을 표현한 완벽한 보기이다. 발코니 난간에는 카펫과 도어매트가 널려있다. 이층에는 화분이, 아래층에는 갑판의자가 놓여있다. 어느 집에서든 흔히 볼 수 있는 일상적인 광경이다. 하지만 원초적인 시선을 배재하고 장면을 자세히 들여다보면 무언가가 잘못된 것을 알아챌 수 있다. 발코니 문은 어딘가를 향하지 않고 접근이 불가능하다. ● 작가의 기발하고 교묘한 장난은 우리의 인식력을 흐리게 하며 예상을 엎지른다. 'Topsy Turvy' 란 뒤죽박죽 또는 혼란스러움을 뜻한다. 뒤죽박죽으로 꼬이고 섞여있는 작가의 사진은 풍자와는 거리가 멀다. 대신 작가는 몇 주에서 몇 달 동안 판자와 플래스티신 이라는 점토와 페인트로 그의 아이디어를 입체적으로 재창조하는데 주력한다. 디테일에 민감한 작가는 흠 없이 완벽한 모형을 만들고 실물과 근접한 장면을 창조해낸다. 그는 모형이 완벽한 경지에 도달해 하나의 작은 세상이 만들어지면 사진기를 든다. ● 이 복잡한 모형들은 자체로도 훌륭한 작품이지만 이들을 사진 안에 담음으로써 정교하게 연출된 세상과 그 세상이 만들어내는 시각적인 환상이 더 큰 파장을 만든다. 작가는 컴퓨터로 사진을 합성하거나 동영상으로 표현하는 것을 거부한다. 그는 빠르고 간편한 작업이나 광택으로 치장되는 결과물을 추구하지도 않는다. 그는 관람객이 언제든지 그들이 보고 있는 것은 허상이라는 것을 깨우치길 바란다. 처음부터 그는 관람객들이 그의 작업이 모형의 사진이라는 것을 알고 관람을 하길 원한다. 사진의 "아날로그적"은 모두 의도적이며 실제 하는 대상의 이미지화가 작가만의 디지털화가 아닐까. ● 프랑크 쿠너트의 "뒤죽박죽 세상"은 다차원적으로 묘사된 소설이다. 작업에 있어 이미지와 제목의 공생은 중요하다. 우리는 일상에서 접하는 따분함과 무의미한 단어, 유행어 따위를 사진을 통해 직면하게 된다. 정형화되고 무의미한 인간의 의사소통은 시각적 매체에 비교해 문자의 전환으로 설득력 있게 베일을 벗을 수 없다. 쿠너트는 유머, 위트, 상스러움, 그리고 그로테스크함의 사이를 고의적으로 서성인다. ■ 고가희

Enigmatic German photographer Frank Kunert, born in 1963 in Frankfurt, excels at turning familiar narrative contexts upside down and forcing us to question reality itself. A multistoried apartment building, drab and grayish, has the requisite carpeted balconies, railings and lone flower box--even a deck chair. It's a familiar view. But on second glance, we sense something is gravely amiss: the balcony doors lead nowhere; in fact, the balconies themselves cannot be accessed. Kunert has not uncovered an architectural conspiracy; the building is his own creation. In the tradition of Thomas Demand, Kunert spends weeks constructing highly detailed, convincingly realistic models, then photographs them to exacting technical standards, creating vibrant images rife with subtle visual puns. This concise and engaging volume provides ample opportunity to study the witty intelligence behind Kunert's recent work. ● German artist Frank Kunert's "Small Worlds" are whimsical, grotesque, and pensive musings. By ingeniously playing with our sense of perception they leave us asking whether they are morbid, or simply funny? ● It's not until we take a closer look at his photographs that we recognize their irony and subversive nature. Frank Kunert manipulates scenes whose content appears to be familiar to us, disrupting the typical suburban idyll by minor but effective distortions. He describes the constant theme of his work as 'our longing for security and our fear of loss and transience.' ● Frank Kunert ignores current trends and does without the possibilities offered by digital photography, instead spending weeks and even months creating detailed model settings made of deco boards, plasticine and paint. ■ LEEHYUN SEOUL GALLERY
