변화 Changes

변화 ● 이 세상에 존재하는 모든 것의 형상이나 고유의 성질이 달라지는 것을 변화라고 한다. 무형의 흙을 기(器)로 만드는 과정도 변화이고, 건조 과정을 거쳐 굽을 깎고 기물 표면에 조각도로 파내어 작업을 하는 과정 역시 변화이다. 가마에 기물을 넣고 소성이라는 과정을 거치고 나면 처음 흙의 성질과 달리 단단하고 치밀한 상태의 기물이 나오게 된다. 이 또한 변화이다.

나의 작업은 기물의 매끄러운 표면을 조각도로 파내는 작업을 동반한다. 기물 표면을 음각으로 가득 채워 넣는 과정 역시 기존의 기물이 변화 했다는 것에 틀림없다. 기물 전체를 조각도로 파내는 과정에서 자칫 단순하고 무료한 음각 크기에 변화를 주어 음각의 생성과 소멸의 과정의 변화를 기물에서 보여주고자 한다. 조각 작업은 내가 기존에 가지고 있는 그릇된 의식과 편견을 떼어내는 의미와 같다. 기물에서 떨어져 나간 수많은 편린, 이것들을 버림으로써 나의 작업은 시작되고 변화한다. 존재하는 모든 것은 변한다. ■ 김훈철

It is a change that shapes and inherent qualities of all existing entities of the world become altered. The whole process of making shapeless dirt into a vessel, drying it, trimming its bottom, and carving also means a change. After baked in a kiln, a vessel is created, as its original material, dirt, becomes hard and dense. This is a change, too. ● My work usually involves a carving on a smooth vessel. The process of engraving on the surface also attests to the change of the vessel. To avoid too simplistic or monotonous patterns, sizes of engravings are alternated, showing the formation and disappearance of engravings on the vessel's surface. For me the activity of engraving is like taking out erroneous ideas and prejudice that I have had in me. Once those innumerable bits and parts are completely removed from the vessel, my new work begins and changes. Everything under the sun changes. ■ KIMHOONCHUL
