아~지리산

누구나 이룰 수 없는 꿈 하나쯤은 마음속에 품고 살아간다. 나에게 있어 그것은 화가였다. 그러나 많은 사람들의 경우가 그러하듯, 나의 어린 시절 역시 꿈을 향해 달려가기엔 현실의 벽이 높았다. 결국 교대를 나와 학교에서 아이들을 가르치는 일을 업으로 삼아 오랜 시절을 흘려 보냈다. 하지만 특별히 아쉬울 것 없는 삶을 살면서도 언제나 내 마음속에 잠재하고 있었던 그 꿈은 때때로 억누르기 힘들만큼 벅차 오르곤 했다. 불혹의 나이에도 하고 싶은 일과 이루고 싶은 꿈이 남아 있다는 것은 어찌 보면 감사한 일이다. 꿈을 이루는 후회 없는 삶을 위해 실천에 옮겼다. 주변의 만류는 신경 쓸 이유가 없었다. ● 그로부터 10년이 흐른 지금, 나는 산을 주제로 그림을 그리고 있다. 늘 그 자리에 있는 듯 하지만 사계절의 흐름 따라 끊임 없이 변화하는 신선한 소재이기 때문이다. 특히 이번 전시에서는 한국의 많은 산 중에서도 구례, 함양, 산청, 남원, 하동, 섬진강을 모두 품고 있는 지리산을 그렸다. 그 온화한 능선과 깊은 산속의 다정한 모습, 지리산과 한 짝을 이루는 섬진강의 청아한 모습을 담았다. 첫 눈에 화려하고 아름다운 그림보다는 보는 이의 마음을 씻어주는 청정제 같은 그림을 그리고 싶은 것이 나의 순수한 바램이다. ■ 현창옥

Everybody lives a life with an 'impossible dream' in his heart, and for me it was a painter. But as in the case of many other people, the wall of reality was too high for me to rush forward the dream. So I found myself graduating from a university of education, and spent a long time teaching children in schools. Though I was living a life with nothing particular to miss, 'the dream' lying hidden in my heart sometimes soared up with such power that I could not resist. In a sense, to have a work to do and a dream to come true at the age of 40, an age of no vacillation, is something to appreciate. I put it in practice for my life of no-regret, trying to make my dream come true. Dissuasion of people around was matter of no concern. 10 years have passed, and I am now painting pictures of mountain, a fresh subject for me, which seems to be always standing at the same place but continuously changing following the harmony of the plants, growing and withering with the flow of 4 seasons. Particularly in this exhibition, among many mountains in Korea I painted Jiri-Mountain, whose modest geographical features are spread in many folds around Gurye, hamyang, Sancheong, Namwon, Hadong and Sumjin River. The gentle ridge and tender look deep in the mountain, the pure appearance of Sumjin River paired with Jiri-Mountain are contained in my paintings. To paint a picture which looks like a purifier washing the minds of those looking rather than a gorgeous and beautiful picture at a first glance is my pure wish. ■ HYUNCHANGOK
