디지털도서관과 디지털 아트 ● 개관 1주년을 맞이하는 국립중앙도서관 디지털도서관은 첨단 미디어 환경을 시민에게 제공하는 포털 시스템이자 대규모 열람실로 백여 대의 PC와 복합상영실, UCC 제작 스튜디오, 대형 멀티비젼 판넬 및 멀티미디어 갤러리 공간을 갖추고 있다. 『아트@디브러리』는 디지털도서관 전관의 설비를 활용하여 다양한 영상매체 실험에 앞장서가는 작가들의 작품을 보여줌으로써 도서관 직원 및 이용객들이 디지털 콘텐츠의 다양한 차원을 경험할 수 있게 하며, 동시에 디지털아트 분야와 디지털도서관 간의 협력 가능성을 모색하는 전시이다.

1970년대의 비디오아트에서 미디어아트, 멀티미디어아트, 뉴미디어아트 등의 이름으로 진화해온 디지털아트는 정보산업에 대한 사회 전반의 관심과 투자, 첨단 테크놀로지의 대중화 환경 속에서 지난 10여 년간 한국 현대미술의 확장과 전개에 견인차 역할을 해왔다. 『아트@디브러리』는 디지털테크놀로지의 속성에서 작품내용과 형식의 창조적 근거를 발견하고 이 시대의 미디어를 통하여 동시대적 태도와 감성을 표현하는 작가 20명을 초대한다. 비디오, 애니메이션, 인터랙티브 영상과 조각, 디지털 그래픽 분야를 아우르는 작품 30여 점은 디지털이미징의 특성들을 보여줄 것이다, 반복과 증식, 거울구조, 픽셀과 프랙탈 구조, 가상현실, 인터액티비티, 데이터와 시스템의 사용으로부터 시간과 공간을 자유자재로 유희하며, 일상과 체험에 새로운 형태를 부여하거나 조직과 권력에 대한 새로운 우화를 만든 작품들이다. 테크놀로지의 첨단성 보다는 예술적 입장이나 시각에 무게를 두고 선택한 작품들은 오늘날 한국 디지털 아트의 의미 있는 단면이 될 것이다.

『아트@디브러리』에 특별 전시되는 백남준의 대형 비디오조각 「로그인을 할수록...」은 디지털 커뮤니케이션의 세계에 대한 백남준의 예지를 보여주는 작품이다. 원제목은 「More Log In, Less Logging」으로 '로그인'과 '로깅 (통나무 벌채량)'의 발음상 유사성에서 출발하여 '로그인' 할수록 종이 사용이 줄어들고 따라서 나무를 벨 일도 줄어든다는 생각을 나무 형태의 모뉴멘탈한 조각으로 표현하였다. 총 16개의 모니터 상에는 백남준 특유의 다양한 이미지 소스를 혼합하여 보여주는 색과 리듬의 현란한 영상 춤판이 펼쳐져 주술적인 분위기의 '버드나무'에 생명을 부여한다. 「로그인을 할수록...」은 디지털도서관이 지향하는 친환경적, 비물질적 커뮤니케이션의 이상을 상징적으로 보여주는 작품이다. ■ 김애령

Exhibition 『Art @ Dibrary,』 held by the National Library of Korea to celebrate the first anniversary of its Digital Library (Dibrary) , presents works of artists pioneering various image media with the Library's display equipments. Evolving from the video art of the 1970s, media art, multi-media art and to new media art, digital art have steered the expansion of Korean contemporary art in the last decade amidst the society-wide attention and investment on IT industry, and the popularization of cutting-edge technology. 『Art @ Dibrary』 invites 20 artists who discover and inspiration from the properties of digital technology, and express contemporary attitude and sensitivity through the present day's media. The three dozen works ranging from video, animation, interactive installation and sculpture, and digital graphic, will clearly display the qualities of digital imaging. By means of repetition and multiplication, mirror structures, pixels and fractal structures, virtual reality,interactivity, data and systems, the works play with time and space, apply new forms to the quotidian life and experience, or freshly allegorize organizations and authority. Selected by artistic stance or artistic vision rather than by the cutting-edge level of technology, the works will serve as meaningful aspects of today's Korean digital art. ■ Kim Airyung
