미물微物과 미물美物 ● 오래 전부터 우리 선인들은 삼월 삼짇날 나비를 보고 길흉을 점치는 습속이 있었다 한다. 하루 중 흰나비를 먼저 보면 그 해에 상복을 입고, 색깔 있는 나비, 즉 노랑나비나 호랑나비를 먼저 보면 길한 일이 있다고 하였다. 나비는 일반적으로 부귀, 아름다움, 행운, 행복의 상징이다. ● 흰나비를 보면 상복을 입는다고 한 흉조의 상징은 흰색의 상복을 연관시켜 그렇게 예단豫斷하는 습속 때문일 것이다. 원래 흰색은 서방색西方色으로 죽음을 상징하며 유색有色(특히 붉은색)에 비해 불길하게 여겨진다. 물론 흰색에는 이와 상반되는 여러 상징적 의미가 있음은 물론이다. 신성, 순결, 고귀, 재생 등이 그것이다.

또한 우리 선인들은 죽은 사람의 영혼이 나비로 환생還生한다고 믿어왔다고 한다. 나비 자체를 죽은 사람의 영혼으로 보았기 때문에 나비로서 길흉을 판단했던 것이다. 삼월 삼짇날 하루 중, 제비, 개구리, 뱀, 벌 등 나비보다 먼저 볼 수 있는 것이 많으나 하필 나비를 보고 점占친 것은 이 때문이다. ● 사람들은 이렇듯, 아름답지만 미물微物에 불과한 나비에게 상징성을 부여한다. 상징성은 추상적이지만, 상징성이 부여된 나비는 구체적인 어떤 의미가 되어 되돌아온다. 내가 만난 나비는, 흰색도 유색도 아니었다. 언뜻 보면 박제나 곤충채집되어 버린 것처럼 보이지만 살아생전의 우아함은 잃지 않고 있었다. 사후(死後)와 같이 느껴졌지만 여전히 끊임없이 변화하고, 멈춘 듯 위장된 시간들로 계속 흐르고 있었다.

미물微物들의 세계가 불안정하고 불규칙적으로 보이면서도 나름의 질서와 규칙성을 지니고 있음을 알게 된다. 우리는 작은 변화가 예측할 수 없는 엄청난 결과를 낳는 나비효과처럼 안정적으로 보이면서도 안정적이지 않고 불안정해보이면서도 안정적인 현상들과 만날 수 있다. ● 죽어 말라가는 나비, 고인 물에 핀 물이끼, 차가운 밤공기 속의 수증기, 영원히 부식되지 않을 것만 같은 타일 조각, 비닐 속에 핀 곰팡이 등.

우리가 끊임없이 마주치고 있는 미물微物들은 빗물에 씻겨 지고 바람에 몸이 마르기를 반복하다가 마침내는 썩거나 부서져 버릴 것이다. 서서히 마모된 미물들은 사라지는 것이 아니라 언젠가 또다시 움트는 생명체로 태어나게 되리라. ● 무심히 지나칠 수도 있는 미물微物들은 우리의 삶 또한 여기에서 저기로 혹은 이곳에서 저곳으로 돌아가며 끊임없이 거듭된다는 것을 가르쳐 준다. 그러한 삶의 의미를 알려주는 작고 하찮은 존재인 미물微物은 때문에 아름다운 미물美物이 될 수밖에 없다. ■ 강유란

A trifling but beautiful thing ● Long ago, our ancestors had a custom of having their fortunes read seeing butterflies on the third day of the third lunar month. It was believed that the person who saw a white butterfly first throughout the day would wear mourning. On the other hand, the person who saw a colorful butterfly such as a sulfur butterfly or a swallowtail would have a good luck. The butterfly is generally the symbol of wealth, beauty, luck, and happiness. ● People might have recalled the custom to wear a white mourning when they see a white butterfly. That might have been the reason why a white butterfly became the symbol of an ominous sign. White is originally an achromatic color which is thought to be ominous symbolizing death. White, of course, has several conflicting symbolic meanings. They are sacredness, purity, nobility, rebirth and etc.

Also, our ancestors believed that the spirits of the dead were reincarnated in butterfly. As butterflies themselves were thought to be the spirits of the dead, people judged fortunes by them. Although there were plenty of things they could see earlier than a butterfly - like a swallow, a frog, a snake, or a bee and so on- throughout the third day of the third lunar month, people told fortunes by butterflies of all things because of the reason. ● People attach symbolic meanings to butterflies, which are beautiful but trifling, in this way. Symbolization is abstract but the symbolized butterflies fly back as certain specific meanings. The butterfly that I met was not white nor colorful. At a glance, it looked to be stuffed or captured. However, it didn't lose its elegance in its lifetime. It felt as if it had been dead, but it was still changing continuously and was flowing as time disguised to have stopped.

It comes to our knowledge that the world of trifling things has order and regularities of its own even though it looks unstable and irregular. Just like The Butterfly Effect which brings about unexpectable tremendous results by a small change, we come across phenomenons which look stable but not stable or which look unstable but stable. Butterflies dead and dehydrated, sphagnum moss formed in stagnant water, vapor in the cold nocturnal air, tile pieces that seems not to be corroded for good, mold mouldy in plastic etc. ● Trifling things that we meet constantly keep on being washed by rainwater and then dried until they decay or break down. Trifling things worn out slowly will not disappear but be born as a sprouting life. Trifling things that we could pass by indifferently teach us that our lives also keep repeating unceasingly circulating from here to there or from this place to that place. Trifling things that let us know such a meaning of life cannot help but be beautiful things for that reason. ■ KANGYOURAN
