그룹전 『5인의 연금술사』展이 브라이트 트레저 아트 프로젝트의 기획으로 런던 빅토리아의 에델 아산티 프로젝트 스페이스에서 선보인다. 이번 그룹전에는 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 다섯 작가 홍장오, 신미경, 줄리엣 로스끄, 고르카 모하메드, 바샬리 파탁이 참여한다. 다양한 아이디어와 독창성이 돋보이는 이번 전시는 크게 세 가지 섹션, 무색의 유레카(Colourless Eureka), 번역된 타임머신(Translated Time Machine), 바벨의 뷰파인더(Viewfinder of Babel)로 구성되어 있다. 각 섹션을 통해, 관람객들은 개별 작품이 들려주는 독특한 이야기들을 마주함과 동시에, 작가들의 다양한 해석이 상호 조화를 이루며 전체적 테마를 구성해가는 새로운 전시 형태를 경험하게 될 것이다. 이번 전시가 열리는 에델 아산티 프로젝트 스페이스는 기존의 비즈니스 사무용 빌딩을 개조시켜 새롭게 각광받는 아트 스페이스로 탈바꿈시킨 장소인데, 연금술의 시각적 다양성을 선보이는 이번 전시의 테마와도 일맥 상통하는 공간이다. 역사적으로 연금술의 가장 주된 목적은 평범한 금속을 황금으로 바꾸거나, 영원한 생을 약속하는 생명수,엘릭시르를 창조하는 것이었다. 현대 사회에서 연금술의 의미는 더욱 개념적이고 철학적으로 변모했다. 특히 컨템퍼러리 예술에 있어서, 이에 대한 인식과 한계는 지난 60년간 끊임없는 재평가와 재개념화 과정 속에 매우 극적으로 변형되어 왔으며, 이 과정에서 아름답거나 혹은 난해한 수많은 작품들이 탄생되었다. 이번 전시는 연금술의 가장 근원적 목적인 황금을 창조해 내는 인간의 욕망과 행위를 '시각적 황금'의 창조 행위로 은유, 재현함으로써, 관객들에게 작품과 테마를 함께 음미할 기회를 선사한다. 또한 이번 전시는 예술계에서 확연히 드러나는 몇 가지 트렌드를 보여준다. 철학적깊이와 정교한 장인정신을 담아낸 뛰어난 작품들뿐만 아니라, 다양한 출신의 예술가들을 통해 이른바 '글로컬(glocal)'의 개념을 상기시키기 때문이다. 누군가 현대의 '예술가'들의 활동에 충분히 동의하지 못하는 이가 있다면, 이번 전시를 통해 '개념화된 시각적 연금술사'의 시선에서 예술에 대한 새로운 의미를 떠올릴 수 있을 것이다.

『5인의 연금술사 』展에 참여하는 작가들은 모두 영국을 기반으로 활동하고 있으며, 저마다의 영역에서 매우 탁월한 작가들이다. 이번 전시에는 영국, 스페인, 아랍, 한국, 중국, 인도 등 다양한 문화적 배경을 가진 작가들이 참여했다. 이들 가운데에는 다른 이들보다 훨씬 더 복잡한 문화적 복합성을 가진 작가도 포함되었다. 작가들이 가진 배경의 다양성만큼, 세 층에 걸쳐 전시되는 작품의 매체(medium) 또한 주목할 만하다. 전시 공간 내내 다양한 매체의 조각, 회화, 설치 작품들이 끊임없이 상호 혼합되어 연금술적이면서도 '비현실적'인 분위기를 자아낸다. 전시에 초대된 관객들은 제일 먼저 건물 바깥으로 나있는 창을 통해, 입구에 설치된 신미경(b.1967) 작가의 '트랜스레이션- 유리 항아리' 시리즈를 마주하게 된다. 지하 층에는 홍장오(b.1974) 작가의 설치, 소형 조각의 혼합 작품들이 '무색의 유레카" 테마로서 펼쳐진다. 이어 2층에서는 '번역된 타임머신'의 테마로 신미경 작가와 영국 작가 줄리엣 로스끄(b.1978), 중국-인도계 영국 작가인 바샬리 파탁(b.1986)의 작품들이 선보인다. 마지막 3층의 전시에서는 '바벨의 뷰파인더'의 테마로 런던에서 활동하는 스페인 작가 고르카 모하메드(b.1978)의 회화 작품들이 관객을 기다리고 있다. 전시에 참여하는 다섯 작가들은 더할 나위 없이 작품을 통해 '보물을 찾는 몽상가들'이다. 이번 전시에서 그들이 보여주는 아름다움은 불멸의 창조물을 갈망하고 탐구하는 '희망'의 또 다른 이름이기도 하다. ■ 브라이트 트레저 아트 프로젝트

Bright Treasure Art Projects is proud to present a group exhibition 'The Alchemists' atEdel Assanti Project Space in the heart of London's vibrant Victoria. ● This group exhibition explores the diverse ideas and creative forms of five London-based artists through three parts - 'Colourless Eureka', 'Translated Time Machine', and 'Viewfinder of Babel'. Each section tells a story on its own which can be experienced by the viewerand when taken as a whole all the three parts with five artists'interpretation is inter-woven within the space that brought into the world. The alchemical visual diversity of the exhibition also coincides with this new project space that has gone through a great transformation from business offices to an emerging art space. ● Historically, the best-known goals of alchemy have been the transformation of base common metals into gold, and the pursuit of the elixir of eternal life. In modern days, meaning of 'alchemy' is more conceptual and philosophical. Especially in contemporary art, whose perception and limits have transformed dramatically over the last 60 years with continuing re-evaluation and new concepts.As with all progressions there have been many beautiful and disastrous works produced along the way, but in this show we try to pursue alchemy's purest roots in bringing its audience visual gold ● In this exhibition, a viewer can witness a few of the trends to be manifested in the art world. ● It has a 'glocal' sense of diversity in origins of artists as well as it shows art works of highly skilled craftsmanship with philosophically advanced concepts. Therefore, if one cannot agree with activities of contemporary 'artists', the alternative can be created as 'conceptualisedvisual alchemists'. ● 'The Alchemists' is showcasing five of the finest UK-based artists with diverse cultural backgrounds. Some artists are more complex than others in their cultural mix. In this group of artists, there is a handsome mixture of British, Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Chinese and Indian cultures. ● The medium of art works displayed over three floors is as diverse as artists' origins. ● Art works of various medium-sculpture, painting, and installation concurrently create a transmixed ambience. ● 'The Alchemists' greets viewers with Meekyoung Shin's 'translation-glass jar' series in the baywindow of the building. Then your journey begins with 'Colourless Eureka' on the basement floor created by Jang-oh Hong (b.1974) and continues with 'Translated time machine' on the second floor by Meekyoung Shin (b.1967), Juliette Losq (b.1978) and Vaishali Pathak (b.1986). It ends with 'Viewfinder of Babel' on the third floor with paintings by Gorka Mohamed (b.1978). ● Five artists in this exhibition are 'dreamers seeking treasures' in their own rights.
