스타워즈-에피소드 Ⅲ : New Future展의 1000자 이야기 ● 세계 경제가 불황을 겪으면서 국내 미술 시장 역시 작품의 전시와 거래가 주춤해지고 많은 사람들이 적지 않은 불안과 당혹감을 가지고서 시장이 살아나기를 고대하고 있다. 하지만, 이러한 경제 한파 속에서도 한 가지, 기분 좋은 낙관을 가지고 지켜보는 분야가 있으니, 바로 한국의 젊은 작가들의 경쟁력이 그것이다. 이에 UNC 갤러리는 매년 연례 기획전으로 해오던 스타워즈-에피소드 기획전을 통해 2010년 새롭게 조명을 받을만한 작가 5명을 소개하고자 한다. ● 『스타워즈-에피소드 Ⅲ』 기획전에 참여하는 5명의 작가는 21세기를 살아가면서 유행에 따라 제기되는 주제가 아닌, 개인 및 사회의 원초적인 문제점을 자신들의 인문학적 상상력을 통해 확대 재생산해내고 있다.

작가 위영일은 복잡하고 변화 무쌍한 현대사회에서 인간의 욕망이 만들어 낸 초인적 존재들의 허구성을 보여주고 있다. 가장 완벽한 존재들의 합이 완벽함의 극치가 아닌 우스꽝스러운 모습의 극치로 재생산 해 냈다. 이렇듯 인간의 과도한 욕망이 보여주는 불합리성의 단면을 제시하고 있다.

유진영이 우리가 살고 있는 세상이 점점 더 세분화되면서 사회에 적응하기 보다는 타인의 간섭을 외면하는 자기만의 공간을 만들고자 하는 현대인의 단상을 보여준다면, 현재 미국이라는 다른 문화권에서 작품활동을 하고 있는 문지하는 타인과의 관계, 다른 사회 속에서 나와 다른 타인, 타문화에 대한 접점과 소통의 방법을 찾고자 한다.

한지석은 내가 살고 있는 사회 속에서 개개인의 정체성을 엮어주는 것들이 어디에 담기느냐, 어떤 환경에 처해 있느냐에 따라 고정되어 있는 것이 아니라 변할 수 있다라는 가변성, 즉 사회가 개인에게 강요하는 보이지 않는 폭력을 회화를 통해 보여주고 있다.

변경수는 기술과 문명이 발전함에 따라 사회는 점점 더 복잡해지나 실질적으로 복잡한 현대생활을 살아가는 인간들의 단순한 삶을 추구해나가는 현대인의 본성을 뛰어난 색채와 단순한 형태를 통해 보여준다. ● 이번 UNC 갤러리에서 소개하는 2010년 『스타워즈-에피소드 Ⅲ』 기획전은 시각적 재능을 통해 쾌락과 안식을 주는 단순한 행위자가 아닌, 동시대를 살아가는 사회구성원으로서 개인에 대한, 사회에 대한 자신의 철학과 의지를 조형적 언어를 통해 현재의 반성과 미래 방향을 제시하는 젊은 지식인들의 토론의 장을 제공하는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다. ■ UNC 갤러리

Star Wars-Episode Ⅲ – New Hope – A Thousand-Character Story ● As the world economy has been receding, the domestic fine art markets have been stagnating with exhibitions and trades decreasing, while many people have been anxious and embarrassed, hoping for the markets to regain their strength. In such gloomy economic circumstances, however, we may well harbor a hope. It is Korea's young artists' competitive edge. UNC gallery would like to introduce via its annual event plan 『Star Wars Episode 3 Exhibition』 to the audience 5 artists who are qualified enough to be spotlighted anew in 2010 ● The 5 artists participating in Star Wars-Episode Ⅲ Exhibition are reproducing some personal and social fundamental issues in the 21st century rather than the themes raised following the fashion by mobilizing their imagination. ● Artist Wi Young-il shows us the fictitious nature of the supermen created by our human desire in this rapidly changing complicated contemporary society. He reproduces the most perfect beings combined not as an extreme being but as a ridiculous look. Namely, he attempts to suggest some aspects of irrationality shown in our human beings' excessive desire. As the world we live in is more and more disintegrated, people attempt to create their own spaces rather than adapt themselves to the society, turning their backs from others. Yu Jin-young shows us such contemporary men's fragmented images. In contrast, Moon Ji-ha who is based in the different cultural sphere or the United States attempts to find the contact point between his native and foreign cultures, exploring a way to communicate with other cultures in his relationship with others ● Han Ji-seok wants to prove that individuals' identity does not remain fixed in their society but vary depending on wherein it is contained or what environment it faces. Namely, he attempts to show us through paintings the invisible violence enforced upon the individuals by the society. ● Byeon Kyoung-soo shows us that the society becomes more and more complicated as technologies and civilization develop, but that our contemporary men pursue a simple life in the complicated contemporary society; he depicts such nature of our contemporary men through excellent color sense and simple forms. ● 『Star Wars Episode』 exhibition aims to offer an arena of discussion to the young intellectuals who endeavor to reflect on the present and suggest some directions for the future through their philosophical view of people and society and will represented by their formative language rather than just make us pleased and comfortable through their visual talent. ■UNC gallery
