Now, introducing...

"Now, introducing..."은 작가가 직접 운영한다는 점에서 기존의 상업갤러리와 차별성을 가지는 Vector Space의 첫 전시이다. 이 전시는 문래동 커뮤니티에 작가이자 동시에 예술을 즐기는 개인인 김혜지, 수니 마코소브가 Vector Space라는 공간을 2009년 12월에 설립하였다는 것, 그리고 두 작가를 알리는 것을 목적으로 한다. ● 가벼운 마음과 단순한 의도에서 시작했던 기획단계와 달리 전시를 위한 작업으로 들어서면서 두 작가는 심리적 압박에 시달리기 시작했다. 수많은 타인과 만나 새로운 관계를 맺고, 공적인 혹은 사적인 관계를 통해 이루어지는 다양한 층의 네트워크를 이루어가는 현대인에게 자신을 소개한다는 행위는 일상에 다름 아니라고 생각했으나 작품 제작을 위한 관념의 구체화에 이르러서는 '존재론', '정체성', '진실성' 등의 철학적 개념을 무시하고 진행할 수 없게 되었다. 두 작가는 그로 인해 상상의 범위를 무한대로 확대하는 데 어려움을 겪었다. 일단 내보이고 나서는 취소할 수도, 부연할 수도 없는 작품을 통해 자신을 표현하기 위해서는 자신과 관련된 모든 사항을 살피고 편집하는 과정이 수반되어야 한다는 사실이 부담으로 작용했기 때문이었을 것이다. 두 작가의 작업, "Self-portrait (자화상)"은 이런 가볍고 무거운 생각과 실제의 자신과 자신을 표현한 작품이라는 결과물에 대한 고민 사이에서 탄생하였다. ● 두 작가는 "Now, introducing…"을 통해 문래동 커뮤니티의 구성원들, 문래동을 찾는 관객들과 소통하고, 친밀함을 나누기를 바라며 향후 예술지역 문래동에서의 Vector Space의 의미와 지향점에 대해 이야기를 나눌 기회를 가졌으면 한다. ■ 벡터스페이스

"Now, introducing..." is the first exhibition at Vector Space. Unlike previously existing commercial galleries, Vector Space is an artist-run space which is fully owned and managed by artists. It was founded in December 2009 by Heaji Kim and Sunee Markosov who are artists as well as art fans. The purpose of this exhibition, as the title literally suggests, is to introduce the space and the two artists to Mullae-Dong community. ● Initially, at the planning stage of this exhibition, the two artists approached the project with a sense of lightness. They thought, after all, that the act of introducing oneself to another in this networking driven cotemporary society is something we do on an everyday basis and, therefore, such an everyday act cannot be too difficult. However, as their work developed further, they realized that they could not ignore such fundamental philosophical questions like "purpose", "identity", and "authenticity". Overwhelmed by these lofty notions, the two artists experienced difficulties in expanding their imagination. "Self-representation" required a careful examination of oneself, and many iterations of editing & re-editing, to decide what to show and what not to show about oneself. Their work exhibited here, "Self-portrait," was born in struggle between their initial sense of lightness and the heaviness that comes from questioning the self and self-representation through art. ● Through "Now, introducing…", Heaji Kim and Sunee Markosov hope to introduce themselves to the Mullae-Dong community and have an opportunity to discuss the meaning and the future of Vector Space within Mullae-Dong's artistic context. ■ Vector Space
