투명한 공간에 부유하는 인간상에 대하여... ● 작가 이재원은 그리드 단위의 투명한 큐브들을 연결하여 부유하는 인간상을 공간에 구축해 내거나 뇌의 형태를 한 오브제들을 투명판 위에 쌓아 올려 후기현대 상황에서의 인간의 존재 방식에 대한 사색들을 시각화하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 그의 작업 중 특별히 mirror, walking , Cell Portrait 등의 작업을 살펴보면 투명한 아크릴 큐브가 층층이 겹쳐진 아크릴판들 사이로 조직 되고 구축하여 만들어낸 공간 속에서 인간 형상의 입체적 이미지 들을 볼 수 있는데, 이러한 인체의 형상들은 일반적인 조각작품처럼 그 표면이 만져질 수 있는 , 다시 말해 물질적인 표면에 의해 내부와 외부가 구분되는 형상을 갖고 있는 것이 아니라, 인체의 형상이 갖는 3차원적 공간만을 지시하고 있다. 왜냐하면 뚫린 공간 속에 구축된 투명하거나 반투명한 물질들 사이로 새어 나오는 빛들의 난반사 때문에 인체의 구체적 형상이 보여지는 것이 아니라 빛의 산란 속에서 단단한 물질이 아닌 모호한 인체 형상에 대한 일루젼만을 보여 주고 있기 때문이다. 그래서 그가 이러한 작업에서 실제로 보여 주고자 하는 것은 구체적인 인체의 형상이 아닌 가상적 인체를 지시하는 동질의 공간적 좌표들이며, 현대의 디지털적 가치체계 속에서 인식되는 가상 현실적 공간 속의 인간의 현전 그 자체이며 작가는 이것을 시각화하여 상징적으로 드러내고자 하는 것으로 보인다. 작가가 만들어 내고자 한 것은 구축된 물질에 의한 형상 자체라기 보다는 물리적 형상을 다시 영상적으로 번안한 조형물인 것이며, 이것은 인간을 지시하는 형상 그 자체가 아니라 인간을 지시하는 형상을 다시 지시하는 시각적 구조 와 인식적 구조에 대한 기호체계라고 말 할 수 있다. ● 그리고 이 시각적 구조를 현대의 미디어적 패러다임 속에서 재발견하고 재인식하게 하기 위한 기제로 디지털적 단위체를 연상하게 하는 그리드의 구조를 작가는 작업 방법으로 도입하였고, 다른 한편 디지털적 격자구조에 투영된 형상에 대한 일루젼을 빛과 물질의 반응과정에서 물질적이기 보다는 영상적으로 연출하여 보여주고자 하는 것이다. 따라서 그가 구축해낸 공간 속의 인간 형상은 실제 공간과 치환되거나 교차되고 있는 가상 공간이라는 컨텍스트 가운데 발견되는 인간의 일루젼적 시각 구조이며, 이것은 텅빈 실재 속에 부유하는 인간의 기표적 한계처럼 기의에서 지속적으로 미끄러지고 부재화 되고 있음을 발견 할 수 있다. 또한 Brain Pillar, Exa Brain 등의 작업에 있어서도 투명판의 단위 면적 사이 사이를 뇌의 형상을 한 오브제를 일정한 간격으로 배치하여 단위 구조적인 설치작업을 보여주고 있는데 그의 작업 설명을 보면 그가 말하는 큐브는 정보 단위인 digit를 생체적 단위인 cell로 치환하여 유기체적 생체구조 역시 네트워크화되고 디지털화된 현대 의 가치체계 속에서 일찍이 포이에르 바하가 "사물보다 형상을, 원본보다 복제를, 현실보다 표상을, 본질보다 가상을 선호하게 된다"면서 이미지 시대를 예고 했던 것처럼 디지털시대, 이미지 복제 시대의 가상공간에 펼쳐진 인간상을 일루젼이라는 허상 속에서 익명성이라는 이름으로 읽어내며 현대인의 부재화된 현재를 말하고자 하는 것이다. 결국 그는 디지털적 패러다임 속에서 인간의 가치체계가 규격화된 단위체의 복제와 치환 그리고 증식과 같은 시대적 증후 아래 있는 가상적 공간을 시각적으로 형상화 하고 실재공간과 가상공간 간극 속에서 현대 인간의 실존적 문제를 고민하면서 인간의 본질적 의미와 좌표에 대해 질문하고 그 존재의 의미를 되새겨 보고자 하고 있는 것이다. ■ 이승훈

모든 인간은 인간으로 귀의한다. ● 처음 '왜' 라는 질문을 던졌을 때부터 모든 질문의 기준이 되고 답이 되어지는 것들은 우리가 인간이라는 진리 안에서 이루어진다. 삶의 가치를 이해하고 죽음을 이야기 하는 것, 시대의 공허를 보며 현실을 비판하는 일, 예술을 위해 작품을 만들고 담론을 형성하는 것, 사람들과 관계를 맺으며 종교를 믿고 삶을 살아가는 일련의 과정은 모두 우리가 인간이라는 명제 아래 인간으로 귀의한다. 유전공학이 발달하고 기존의 가치가 깨어지고 전복되는 기준 없는 세상 같지만 결국 유일한 기준은 우리의 존재에 대해서 묻는 것이다. 나에게 있어 작업이란 인간이란 존재에 대한 현재적 물음이다. 따라서 인간은 인간으로 귀의한다는 나의 담론은 이러한 과정과 내면의 탐구를 통해 우리의 존재와 삶의 탐구로 이어진다. 나는 현재 뇌, cell 등 인체의 기관, 일부분을 단위화 하여 집적하는 방식으로 상징적 이미지를 구축하고 만들어 내는 작업을 진행하고 있다. 작업 앞에서 나는 연구자이자 관찰자 혹은 창조자의 위치에 서서 그들을 집적하고 배열하며 공간을 제공하고 다시 틀을 제한한다. 우리사회 안에서의 개인의 모습 혹은 전체의 모습 ● 브레인 타워를 시작으로 우리가 일반적으로 알고 있는 뇌의 속성과 형태를 역설하고자 하였으며 유리판 위에 쌓는 형식으로 사회구조의 틀을 은유 하며 사람들에게 관념화 되어있는 가치의 허상을 보여주고자 하였다. 뇌는 일반적으로 인체의 가장 중요한 부분으로 인식되지만 작업 안에서 다른 부분은 삭제된 채 보여지게 된다. 이것은 한 인간으로서의 개체가 아닌 사회구성원 혹은 거대한 구조 안에서의 구성인자로 보여짐을 뜻한다. 그리하여 뇌는 개인이라는 개체의 표현에 있어 더 이상 의식 없음, 혹은 일반화된 개체를 은유 하고 있다. 뇌는 실제적인 이미지와 대비되게 호두알 처럼 작은 크기로 만들어져 그 실제성이 가벼운(가소로운, 별거 아닌) 것으로 비춰진다. 일정한 배열에 의해 유리판 위에 쌓여지며 그 위에 다른 보조물 없이 유리판이 놓임으로써 그 무게의 압력을 고스란히 견뎌 내야 한다. 반복을 통해 쌓아진 결과물은 선진국의 상징인 높은 빌딩을 연상케 하거나 건물을 받치고 있는 기둥처럼 보여 지기도 하며 cpu의 구조 안에 들어있는 연산체의 일부로 보여 지기도 한다. 또한 연결선상에서 개인을 작은 큐브의 형태로 치환하여 수학적 가상공간을 제한하였다. 그리고 하나의 큐브는 나에게 있어 cell(세포, 작은방)이라는 단위로 인식하고 내가 만든 가상공간에 재배열하여 형태를 구축하고자 하였다. 적게는 3000개에서 1만여 개 이상의 cell들은 배열되고 쌓여져 인체형상을 이룬다. 걷고 바라보는 일상의 그들의 모습은 부유한다. 작품 안에서의 인체는 한 개인이면서 동시에 우리사회 전체를 의미한다. 표정 없는 인간형상은 익명의 누군가, 곧 관객 자신의 모습을 투영하게 되며 우리들의 허상을 바라보게 된다. 판과 판 사이에 배열 되어진 cell로 인해 형태는 난반사가 일어나며 수많은 일루젼을 만들어 내는데 이로 인해 자연스레 환영적 이미지를 보여준다. 이는 우리의 세계구조 안에서 부유하는 존재, 실재하는 것과 실재하지 못하는 존재의 두 가지 간극을 동시에 반영한다. ■ 이재원

About floating image of human on the transparent space ● The artist, Lee Jae-won has been working to visualize about the speculations of the existing way of human in the circumstance of postmodern era. It was constructed the floating image of human on the space by connecting the transparent cubes in the unit of grid form, or piled up the objects with the form of brain on the transparent panel. In the middle of his artworks, specially, examining the works such as Mirror, Walking, Cell Portrait, it can be shown the three-dimensional images of human figure in the space organized and built up transparent acrylic cube between the overlapped acrylic panels after another. These figures of human body can be tangible like a general sculpture; in other words, it is not taking the figure dividing with inside and outside by the material surface, but pointing at the three-dimensional space with the figure of human body. Because of the non-reflection of lights emerged from between transparent or non-transparent materials constructing in the space with a hole, it is not shown the specific figure of human body, but the illusion of ambiguous human body not a solid material in the scattering reflection of light. Therefore, he would show the homogeneous spatial coordinates pointing at the imaginary human body, not the specific figure of human body. It can be visualized in the symbolic way about the existence of human being itself in the imaginary space recognizing in the digital value system of contemporary era. The artist would reveal not the figure itself by the constructed material, but the artwork adapted the material figure in video image again. This can be told about not the figure itself representing human being, but the symbolic system in visualization and recognition system instructing the representing human figure again. ● And as the mechanism to rediscover and recognize this visual structure in the contemporary media paradigm, the artist adopts the way of the grid structure reminding of the digital units. On the other hand, he tries to show the illusion of reflecting figure on the digital plaid structure in the reacting process of light and material, by the way of displaying not material but video image. So he suggests about that the human figure in his constructing space can be the illusion visual structure of human being discovered in the context of replacing or exchanging the real space with the virtual space. It can be shown the fact getting to be consistently slipped and absent from the signified like the limitation of signifier of human being floating in the emptying reality. Also in the artworks of Brain Pillar, Exa Brain, they show the unit structural installation by arranging the object with the form of brain between the unit surface of transparent panel in a certain gap. In his comment of the artwork, he said that the cube can be replaced the digit as the written symbol of data with the cell as the biological unit, as the organic biological structure as well in the network and digital contemporary value system. Formerly, as previously Feuer Bach mentioned "it will be prefer the form to the object, the original text to the copy, reality to symbol, and the essential nature to the imaginary". It would be talk about the absence of identity of contemporary people can be regarded the image of human being revealing in digital, virtual space of image duplication as the anonymous existence in the illusion. In eventual, he would suggest that the human value system could be embodied to visualize the virtual space in the tendency of era such as the duplication, replacement and multiplication of regularized units in digital paradigm. Everyone returns to Human being. ● From the very first question of 'why, the criteria of all questions and answers can be found out the answer in the truth that we are human beings. It can be returned to the subject that we are human being in the process of a series of life, understanding of the value of life and death, criticizing the reality of emptiness in the era, discussing about the artwork, making a relation with people and returning to the religion. Although it looks like the world losing the criteria, which has been broken and subverted the existing value by developing the genetic engineering, in eventual, the only criteria should be asking about our existence. To me, creating is the present question about human being. Therefore, the discourse that every human can be returned to human being, connected with our existence and the experiment of life through these process and searching about the inner side. Currently, I am working to build up the symbolic image in the way of integrating by uniting the organ and a part of human body such as brain, cell and so on. In my artwork, I am a researcher and observer by integrating, arranging them, and offering the space and restricting the frame again. The Individual or Group Image in Our Society ● It stressed the attribute and form of brain that we have known in general with starting from brain tower. And it tried to show the illusion of the value that people were ideologically known as, by metaphorically expressed the frame of society structure in the form of building on the glass panel. Although brain is realized as the very important part of human body in general, it is shown without the other parts in the artwork. It means that it is shown as not an object, but the member of society or the organizing factor in a huge structure. Therefore, the brain can be metaphorically expressed the unconsciousness or the generalized object in expressing as an object. The brain can be regarding as a trivial thing by making a very small size like the kernel of a walnut in comparison with the realistic image. It should be supported under the pressure of the weight by putting on the glass panel by building in a certain arrangement without the other assistance. The result built in repetition can be reminded of the skyscraper as the symbol of the developed country, the pillar supporting the building, or the part of operator in the structure of CPU (Central Processing Unit). Also it was restricted the mathematical imaginary space substituted a small tube for an individual on the extension line. And a cube can be realized as the unit of a cell (small room) to me, it was arranged in my imaginary space and built the form. It was constituted in human body by arranging, building more than from 3000 to 10,000 cells. It floats their images in the daily routine walking and looking each other. In the artwork, the human body can be not only an individual but also the whole group of our society. The non-expressional human figure can be pointed out our illusion reflecting the anonymous, the viewer's image of himself or herself. By the cell arranged between the panels, non-reflection can be happened in the form and made numerous illusions, it shows the illusion in natural way. It reflects the existence floating in our world structure in the gap between the existence and non-existence at the same time. ■ LEEJAEWON
