삶을 조각하다

삶을 조각하다 ● 나는 삶을 조각합니다. 사전적 의미로 삶이란 사는 일, 또는 살아있는 모습을 뜻합니다. 그러니까 살아있다는 것은 아무것도 하지 않는다손 치더라도 그 자체가 편안한 안식이 아니라 힘겨운 일이라는 생각이 듭니다. 나는 강인함에 대한 막연한 환상과 꿈을 가지고 있습니다. 그래서 유년기의 우상이던 만화주인공 아톰과 한국의 수호거인 금강역사상을 합치시킨 인간상을 창안하고, 단단한 검은 화강석과 같은 강인한 물질을 사용하여 형상을 완성시켰습니다. 그 인간상은 삶이라는 힘든 일에 초연해지고자 하지만 늘 그 안에서 갈등할 수밖에 없는, 완벽하지 못한 초인(超人)입니다. 「바람이 불어도 가야한다」에서 보듯, 주먹을 불끈 쥐고 한 걸음 내딛는 초인의 모습에는 꿋꿋하게 살아남고자 하는 나의 염원이 담겨있습니다. 내 작품 속에서 강인함은 「금 나와라 뚝딱」에서처럼 한국 전래동화 속 도깨비방망이의 형태로 나타나기도 합니다. 도깨비방망이는 하루하루 쌓여가는 일상의 고단함에서 벗어나고 싶은 인간의 소망을 우의적으로 형상화한 것입니다. 「신화」에서는 스스로 굳건해지고 싶은 마음을 상상속의 수호동물인 해태의 모티프를 끌어들여 표현하였습니다. 남을 두렵게 하기보다는 장난스러운 표정을 짓고 있는 호랑이를 통해 무거운 현실을 경쾌한 익살로 넘어서 보고자 의도했습니다. 삶은 불확실한 것이지만, 분명한 것도 있습니다. 그것은 반드시 살아본 자만이 삶을 이야기할 수 있다는 점입니다. 오늘도 나는 살아가면서, 삶을 조각하고 있습니다. ■ 김성복

Sculpting Life ● I carve life. Dictionaries say that life is the experience of being alive, or the course of existence of an individual. For me, the definitions seem to suggest that life is more hard work than a comfortable rest even when we spend time doing nothing. ● I've had an illusion about power. That is why I created a human figure in my work by combining Atom, a famous cartoon character that I admired in my childhood days, and Vajra Guardian, a Buddhist warrior protecting Buddha's law. I completed the figure by using hard materials such as dark granite. The human figure is an imperfect Superman who suffers from the hurly-burly of everyday life despite the effort to remain aloof from it. The Superman in "Walk in High Wind", in which he takes a gigantic step forward with clenched fists, reflects my aspiration towards heroic survival in life. ● In my works power appears in the form of a magic club carried by the Korean elves called dokkaebi in old folk tales or is expressed via the motif of haetae, a mythical creature marked by a lion's body with a horn at the center of its head, which is known as the guardian of truth. The ambition to at least temporarily escape the reality through joke is reproduced in the form of mischievous tiger in "Myth". I try to capture in a humorous allegorical manner the human desire to be released from the fatigue of daily life to protect themselves. ● Life is surely uncertain, but there is one thing that I believe is certain. That is, only those who live life can talk about it. Today, I continue to live, carving it. ■ KIMSUNGBOK
