'환유적바다' Seaofmirage

사유적인 바다 ● 바다는 사람들에게 꿈과 희망을 심어주고 감정을 불러일으키는 특별한 공간이다. 그래서 사진가를 비롯한 시각 예술가들뿐만 아니라, 수많은 문학가들에게도 관심과 표현의 대상으로 자리매김 해 왔다. 특히 형식주의적인 20세기 모더니즘 사진가들이 늘 동경하고 소재로 삼은 공간이 바다이다. 그리고 동시대의 많은 현대 사진가들도 여전히 현대적인 관점과 감각적인 감수성을 바탕으로 바다를 재구성하여 보여주고 있다. 그래서 다른 작가들과의 차별화된 독창적인 이미지를 생산한다는 것이 결코 만만한 일이 아니다.

2000년대 초반이후 현대사진은 디지털테크놀로지의 발전과 일반화로 인하여 혁명적인 과정을 거치고 있다. 실험적이고 아방가르드적인 수많은 사진가들이 디지털표현매체와 디지털프로세스를 작업과정에서 적극적으로 수용하여 독특하고 감각적인 결과물을 생산하여 새로운 형식의 작품을 많이 발표하고 있는 것이다. 이번에 바다를 표현대상으로 선택하여 초감각적인 색채로 재구성된 이미지를 생산하여 전시하는 창남도 디지털표현매체를 효과적으로 수용하여 자신의 미적인 감수성과 사유세계를 드러내고 있다.

작가는 밤 시간대에 바다의 표면을 미시적인 시각으로 접근하여 찍었는데, 그 최종 결과물이 드러내는 컬러가 현실에 존재하는 자연적인 컬러가 아니라, 작가 자신의 상상력과 미적인 주관을 바탕으로 창조한 인공적인 컬러이자 현대적인 감수성을 드러내는 또 다른 표상이다. 이번에 발표하는 작품들을 한 장 한 장 세부적으로 살펴보면 카메라메커니즘의 특성과 인공조명 그리고 표현대상의 외형적인 느낌이 유기적으로 얽혀서 보는 이들의 정서를 자극하는 결과물이 생산 되었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 그리고 작가가 보는 이들의 정서와 최종 결과물의 시각적인 자극이 교감하는 지점을 찾아내려고 노력한 흔적들이 작품 여기저기에서 느껴져서 더욱 더 깊은 공감대를 형성한다.

사진작품을 비롯한 당대의 시각예술작품이 작품성과 존재가치를 인정받으려면 최종 결과물에서 독창성과 현대성 그리고 작가로서의 진정성이 느껴져야 한다. 그러한 관점에서 창남의 작품을 분석해보면 디지털매체의 특성과 작가의 독창적인 미적 세계가 효과적으로 상호작용하여 완성도를 보장해주고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 사진은 매체예술이므로 매체의 특성을 잘 이해하고서 적극적으로 수용하는 것이 무엇보다도 중요한데, 작가의 작품에서는 그것이 원초적인 바탕이 되어 있기 때문에 현대성을 반영하는 의미 있는 결과물로 읽혀지는 것이다. ● 창남이 이번에 전시하는 작품들은 미술적인 상상력과 감수성 그리고 사진적인 테크닉이 유효적절하게 어우러져서 생산된 최종 결과물이다. 그래서 그 결과물이 당대적이면서도 보는 이들의 정서를 순화시켜주는 감각적인 디지털사진영상이미지로서 역할을 하는 것이다. 그리고 이미지 자체가 작가의 정신적 영역의 상징적인 기호로 느껴진다. ■ 김영태

Speculative sea ● The sea is a special place that gives us dreams and hopes, and provokes our emotions. That's why the sea has been an object of attention and expression for visual artists as well as writers of literary works. Especially, formalistic modernist photographers of the 20th century have a longing for the sea and use it as subject matter for their work. Today, many contemporary photographers show the sea reconstructed within a modern point of view and sensibility. Therefore, it is not an easy task to create a unique image. Since the early 20th century, modern photography has been revolutionized by the development and spread of digital technology. Quite a few pioneering avant-garde photographers have wholeheartedly accepted digital processes and digital media, producing new varieties of work. ● Here, Chang Nam holds a private exhibition with images of the sea regenerated with extrasensory colors, which show her delicacy and perceptiveness in using digital media effectively. The artist captures the surface of a night sea microscopically, and the colors, as a result, are not natural ones but artificial ones based on her imagination and desire to recreate. Looking into each work closely, you can tell that camera mechanisms, artificial lighting, and the external shapes of objects are intimately combined into images which stimulate the audience's emotions. In addition, her work arouses our sympathy at the point where the visual stimulation of the finished work meets the viewers' feelings. ● For the quality and value of contemporary art works including photographs to be recognized, the work must contain originality, modernity and sincerity. In this respect, Chang Nam's works are a perfect combination of the characteristics of digital media and her aesthetic originality. Photography is a medium art, so it is essential for artists to understand the features of digital media. Since her works are based on this principle, they are interpreted as a meaningful and valuable reflecting freshness. ● Chang Nam's works in this exhibition are successful outcomes connecting her artistic imagination and sensibility with professional techniques.
