미키, 빛으로 성장하다 ● 작가 고기현(高琦賢)은 그동안 자연친화적인 소재로서의 광목이나 한지 그리고 먹, 천연염료 등을 매재로 하여 자연과의 일체감을 표현하는데 조형적 무게를 실어왔다. 그 근저에는 한지의 물성을 활용한 시간의 흐름 예컨대 과거에로의 회귀지향적 연민의식이 자리하고 있다. 그러한 실험정신을 기조로 하여 근자에 와서는 한지에 인공매체인 LED조명을 결합하는 방식으로 그만의 독특한 조형어법을 창출해 내고 있다.

그의 근작들은 영원한 동심의 캐릭터인 미키(Mickey)의 형상을 차용하여 현실과 이상의 괴리를 둘러싼 자기성찰과 함께 복잡한 일상에서 빚어질법한 내면의 심리상태를 조형화한다. 작가의 유년 시절에 절친한 마음의 벗이었던 미키는 시간의 흐름과 함께 성인이 된 후에도 여전히 정신적 위안의 대리물로 기능한다. 그로 인해 미키는 현대사회에서 겪게 되는 심리적 불안감이나 정신적 공황상태를 치유하고자 하는 잠재된 무의식의 소산에 다름 아니다. ● 이를테면 작가는 우리가 몸담고 있는 변화무쌍한 세상사의 편린들을 명민하고 섬세한 안목으로 응시하는 동시에 미키를 통해 삶에 대한 잔잔한 진실에의 믿음을 발언하고 있다. 화면 마다 어김없이 등장하는 미키의 형상은 LED조명과 조우하면서 관자로 하여금 무디어진 감수성의 촉매제뿐만 아니라 자신이 꿈꾸는 은밀한 심리적 낙원의 세계로 몰입하게 만드는 매개자 역할을 수행한다.

그는 빛의 조도가 인간 심리에 미치는 영향을 고려하여 한지의 두께를 의식하면서 가장 정적인 상태로서 철학적 사색을 가능케 하는 적절한 광도를 만들기 위해 몇 번에 걸쳐 순지를 배접한다. 나아가 LED조명의 다소 몽환적이면서도 미묘한 색조와 표현 대상에 수렴되는 빛의 파장과 리듬은 작가의 심안(心眼)에 의해 보다 밀도 있게 조율된다. 이러한 빛에 의한 선묘와 조도를 의식한 수공적 노력들은 전통한지가 지닌 물성에 함의된 사의(寫意)적 뉘앙스를 환기하기 위한 일환이라 할 수 있다. ● 예컨대 두터운 합판위에 홀(hole)을 파내어 그 배후에서 투영되어진 LED조명은 한지의 투과성이 갖는 빛의 스밈과 번짐 효과에 의해 독특한 명상적 분위기를 발아한다. 빛은 한지와의 고요한 대면으로 인해 마치 깊은 심연에서 여러 개의 작은 오색 빛 생명체를 건져 내는 듯 화면 전체에 자연스러운 생동감을 부여한다. 이처럼 조용한 가운데 움직임이 존재하는 그의 화면은 빛에 의한 정중동(靜中動)의 미학이 살아 숨 쉬고 있다.

Mickey, penetrated through light ● The artist Ko ki-hyun has described and focused on the correspondence with nature by using materials of cotton clothes, korean papers, ink-sticks and natural dyes, which are nature-friendly. ●On the base of it, there is the flow of time utilized the quality of the korean paper, for example, compassion consciousness which is like a return to the past-oriented. By experimental spirit on art, these days she started to create a unique her own way of formative arts by combining the artificial LED lighting with the korean paper. ● She borrows the image of Mickey as one of cartoon characters to portray self-reflection of chasms between reality and ideal, and at the same time, depict complex inner psychological states appearing in busy daily life. ● Mickey, the best friend of this artist during her infant days, still functions as the substitute of mental comfort even after she was grown up as time went by. In other words, Mickey mirrors potential unconsciousness deep within our human beings to overcome psychological anxiety or mental panics in contemporary society. ● In details, She attempts to view a lot of factors in rapidly-changing world, with sharp and subtle eyes, and at the same time, she observes her belief in true value of life through Mickey. Thus, the image of Mickey often appearing in each screen encounters LED lights and, plays a role as a catalyst to revive observers ' insensitive sensitivity and as a medium to make observers absorbed and assimilated into implicit psychological paradise world that she dream. ● Considering the effects of light luminance on human beings ' psychological state, this artist makes the repetitive works of light colors fit for philosophical thinking or ideas, by folding and patching right-sized Korean paper. ● Moreover, light wavelength and rhythm are more profoundly reflected by this artist's mental images through the with somewhat visionary and subtle LED lighting color tone and expressive objects. ● These manual works through line drawing and luminance by way of lights can be a bid to arouse picture images and nuances penetrated through physical properties that Korean traditional paper has. ● As an illustration, LED lighting penetrated behind thick plywood hole can create unique and meditative atmosphere through the effects of light reflection and absorption that Korean paper has in the aspect of permeation.
