쌓기와 채우기의 시간과 삶

삶, 응결된 리얼리티 ● 그에게 있어 쌓는 다는 것은 채운다는 것이기도 하다. 흙을 빚어 돌담을 쌓듯 혹은 돌을 켜 탑을 쌓듯 무언가를 쌓는다는 것은 공간을 채우는 일이며, 상징을 채우는 작업이다. 돌담이 채운 집의 품은 사람살이의 공간학이며, 탑이 채운 공간은 사리장엄의 상징론인 셈이다. 이민경의 작업은 시각적 이미지나 기호와 달리 본질적으론 쌓거나 채우는 데에서 그 의미를 찾게 된다. 그러므로 산이나 꽃, 잎과 탑의 기호는 그의 작품을 해제하는 중요한 상징이라 할 수 없다. 그것은 화면을 채워나가기 위한 '쌓기'의 공간학이 빚어내는 단순 기호일 가능성이 크다. 실제로 그는 거의 모든 시간을 이 쌓기에 할애한다. 닥종이를 고르고 구입하는 일, 집으로 와 잘게 절단하는 일, 그런 다음 화면에 쌓는 일은 시각적 이미지를 뛰어넘는 미학적 개념이라 할 것이다. 물고기의 비늘이나 물빛의 물비늘처럼 화면위에 부착된 종이들은 그 밑에 깔린 채색들 사이를 유영하며 가볍게, 그러나 묵직하게 자신의 존재감을 발산하고 있다. 그런데 우리는 그런 그의 개념과 시각적 판타지가 너무 강하게 어필하는 시각기호들에 의해 약화될 수도 있음을 확인하게 된다. 그는 자신의 일상을 지배하는 시간의 결을 이런 작업으로 풀어내 보고자 하였다. 즉 쌓기와 채우기라는 개념으로 집적된 일상을 표현하고자 했던 것이다.(부분) ■ 김종길

Life, solidification of reality ● To her, stacking up is about filling up. Like stacking up stone walls with shaped clays or making a tower by piling up stones, stacking up something is about filling a space and identifying a symbol. Inside of the house within stone walls is the study of space for people's living, while the space made by tower is theory of symbol for Sarijangeom (bunch of Buddha's bones found in a Korean traditional tower). Works of Lee Min-kyung is different from visual images or signs and is about searching meanings by stacking or filling things up essentially. Thus, signs of mountains, flowers and towers cannot be considered as important elements to understand her works. This is more likely to become simple signs that are made by the spaces produced by actions of stacking up that fulfill the canvas. Actually, he spends most of her time on this process of stacking. Choosing and buying Dak papers, cutting them at her home and then stacking them up on the canvas will be something more than just a visual image - it can be considered as an aesthetic concept. The papers, which are stuck on the canvas like scales of fish or reflections on the water surface, heavily reveal their existence by lightly flying out from the background that is covered under them. However, we can see how her concepts and visual fantasy can be weakened by other visual signs that appear strongly. she wanted to express the texture of time that controls his daily life with her artworks.
