도시 곳곳에서 천적이 사라지는 바람에 기하급수적으로 늘어난 길 고양이를 샴, 페르시안 고양이처럼 수출해 보자는 한 사업가가 있었다. 조선 시대의 회화에 등장한 고양이가 현재의 길 고양이와 흡사하다는 점에서 그는 아이디어를 착안했고 수 차례의 교배를 통해 한국인 최초로 조선 왕실 고양이의 전통을 잇는 다양한 샘플을 개발한다. 중국, 미국, 일본, 독일, 프랑스 등 세계 각지로 수출한다는 장기적 계획 아래 이 사업이 진행될 것이다. 과연 이 사업은 성공할 수 있을까?

'신윤 & 홍성재'는 2인으로 구성된 그룹 작가로 첫 번째 개인전 『On the Road』전에서는 「조선 왕실 표화묘」라는 제목의 영상 작업이 주를 이룬다. 「조선 왕실 표화묘」란 조선왕실에서 키웠던 얼룩고양이라는 뜻으로 앞의 가설에서 지어진 이름이다. 「조선 왕실 표화묘」는 흔히 길에서 볼 수 있는, 또한 고급 혈통으로 이름 붙여 지지 않은 길 고양이를 소재로 하고 있다. 「조선 왕실 표화묘」라고 적혀있는 사각 프레임 안에 길 고양이가 등장한다. 고양이들은 고양이 통조림으로 적혀진 그 글자를 먹을 뿐이고, 그 글자가 거의 사라져 흔적만 남은 순간 홀연히 사라진다.

현재 길 고양이라 불리 우는 한국 토종 고양이에게 도시의 '길 '은 삶의 공간이자 죽음의 공간이기도 하다. 길에서 먹이를 구하고 쉴 곳을 찾는 일은 그리 쉬운 일이 아니다. 그들 대부분이 버려진 음식물 쓰레기 봉투를 뜯는다. 이런 길 고양이들에게 고양이 통조림이라는 먹이는 굉장한 호사인 것이다. 길 고양이 위한 표화묘라는 이름 조차 통조림으로 쓰여져 그들에겐 그저 먹이라는 것, 또한 그 이름이 사라지면서 오히려 그들의 존재가 부각되는 아이러니를 볼 수 있다. 무심하게 지나치는 길 위에서 살아가는 혹은 존재하는 것들에 대한 이야기가 우리에게는 어떤 의미로 다가올까? ■ 신윤&홍성재

There is a businessman, who plans to establish street cats export business. He believes there's potential since cats multiply greatly in a short time like Persian cats or Siamese cats. He found that present road cats have a similar image of cats in paintings of the Jo-seon Dynasty period. He is the first man who improved various samples of cats that are descended from their ancestor cats through several interbreeds. This business will continue under a long-term plan that means an exportation of these cats to the four corners of the world. Can this business plan be success? ● This is an artist group of two members who are Shin Yun and Hong Sung-jae. Theirs video works that is entitled 「The brindled cat of Jo-seon dynasty」 are the principal part of this first solo exhibition 『On the Road』. 'The brindled cat of Jo-seon dynasty' is a name in the abovementioned hypothesis. It's a meaning of bred a brindled cat in Jo-seon dynasty. The main subjects and themes of this video works are common cats in the road or not a very noble kind of cats. The road cat appeared in the square frame with words「The brindled cat of Jo-seon dynasty」 wrote on. They just this words that are made of canned goods contents and vanished as if a magic when no traces of the original words remained. ● Now street have double-edged meanings to the native cats in Korea. Those meanings are life and death to cats. It is not easy to search foods and find place to unwind in the street. Most of them bite off garbage. The canned goods are a very special food to street cats. Ironically, the name for street cats written canned meets is just a prey of those cats, and also when this name disappeared brought into relief them.
