투명한 벽, Transparent Walls

김정주는 철로 만든 투명한 격자 모양의 형태와 표면의 세계를 구축하고 있다. 이 3차원의 구성은 빌딩과 다리, 고속도로와 도시 구조물들을 참조한 것이다. 작가가 만든 미니어처 장난감 도시들은 어린 시절의 악몽으로부터 기인한 세계나 우리 시대의 실재하는 도시를 기하학적으로 추상화한 것 혹은 포스트 모던한 거대도시 아래의 피폐한 세계를 묘사한 것으로 볼 수도 있다. 작가의 고생스런, 거의 고집스럽다 할 수 있는 작업 방식은 창조적인 자극의 원천에 자리한 강박과 잠재된 어두움을 보여주고 있기 때문이다. ● 그러나 작업에 대한 그녀 자신의 분석에 따르면 작품 뒤에 내재된 본연의 동기가 있으며, 그것은 삶의 신체적, 사회적 그리고 심리적인 시각에서 존재의 본질에 닿으려는 욕구라는 것이 확연해진다. 내가 김정주의 작업 '투명한 벽'을 HIAP 프로젝트 룸에서 보았을 때 가장 인상 깊었던 것은 아주 작은 셀과 같은 구조의 작업이었다. 그녀는 우리가 당연시하며 사용하고 폐기했던 값싸고 일상적으로 사용되는 오브제를 특별한 의도 없이 옆에 늘어놓아 보여주고 있었다.

추상적인 형태와 실용적인 오브제들을 병렬시킨 이 작은 정물들은 시각적인 동시에 촉각적인 미세한 감각들을 만들어낸다. 그 작품이 철학적 함의는 데카르트적 심신이원론이나 라이프니츠의 병행론의 가벼운 버전으로 보여 질 수 있다. 시적으로 해석하면 아마 이 작품들은 눈에 보이지도 손에 잡히지도 않지만 우리를 벗어나지 못하게 하는 신의 세계와 우리 인생에 대한 본연의 멜랑코리한 감정을 표현하고 있는 듯하다. ■ 야코 러스타니우스

국립현대미술관(관장 배순훈)에서 운영하고 있는 창동미술창작스튜디오는 오는 11월 13일(금)부터 11월 19일(목)까지 창동스튜디오 전시실에서 7기 장기입주작가 김정주의 귀국보고전 『투명한 벽Transparent Walls』을 개최한다. 이 전시에서 김정주는 '2009 하반기 국제교환입주프로그램'을 통해 핀란드의 국제레지던스 프로그램 HIAP(Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Program)에 체류하며 3개월간 작업한 결과를 전시한다. ● 김정주는 경원대 환경조각과를 졸업하고 2번의 개인전과 다수의 그룹전에 참여하며 철침(staple)을 활용한 설치 조각을 해왔다. 작가는 차가운 은색 철침을 집적하여 도시(The City연작)나 놀이공원(Magic Land연작) 같은 현대적 공간을 구성하고 이를 사진으로 재현함으로써 재료와 소재의 뛰어난 결합을 보여주었다. 또한 설치작업과 병행하고 있는 드로잉작업(Cell연작)은 건축적이고 기하학적인 요소들이 결합된 밀도 있는 작업으로, 공간에 대한 작가의 다방면에 걸친 조형적 탐구를 보여주고 있다. ● 이제까지 줄곧 사진 이미지를 통해 작품을 전시하였던 작가는 이번 전시에서 처음으로 교환입주 기간 동안 핀란드에서 제작한 '투명한 벽(Transparent Wall)'이라는 설치작품을 전시공간에 선보인다. 김정주는 철침으로 제작한 그리드(grid)로 벽을 만들어 전시공간에 매다는 행위를 통해 2차원적 평면(벽)을 3차원적 설치작업으로 변모시키며 관람자의 시각에 일루전을 일으키는 의도적 개입을 시도하고 있다. ● 작가는 귀국 전 핀란드 HIAP 프로젝트 스페이스에서 동명의 전시를 개최하여 현지 미술계에 직접 작품 세계를 소개하는 기회를 가졌으며, 이번 김정주 귀국보고전은 입주 작가들의 창작의욕을 고취하고 국제교류를 활성화하는 소기의 목적을 달성한 바람직한 사례가 될 것이다. ● 보다 자세한 정보는 창동창작스튜디오 홈페이지 www.artstudio.or.kr 혹은 02-995-0995를 통해 얻을 수 있다. ■ 국립현대미술관 창동창작스튜디오

Jung Joo Kim keeps on constructing a world of transparent grid-like formations and surfaces made of steel. The three-dimensional compositions seem to refer to buildings, bridges, highways and other urban structures. Are they miniature toy cities, shadow worlds from the nightmares of her childhood, skeletal underworlds of post modern megalopolises or topological abstracts of our contemporary urban reality, it is difficult to say. The artist's painstaking, almost obsessive working method hints at darker undertones and neurosis at the root of the creative impulse. ● Judging from the artist's own analysis of her work it becomes obvious, however, that there is a genuine intellectual motivation behind her practice, a desire to reach to the essence of existence at the focal point of physical, social and psychological perspectives on life. What struck me most in Jung Joo Kim's show Transparent Walls at HIAP Project Room were the minuscule cell-like constructions which she presented alongside of cheap everyday objects that usually are taken for granted, used and disposed of without further thought. ● These small still lifes juxtaposing abstract forms with practical objects created a strong sensation of imperceptible becoming visible and tactile. Those philosophically inclined might have seen a lighthearted demonstration of the Cartesian mind-body dilemma or of Leibniz's parallelism. ● For us poetical minds, the works represented perhaps a melancholic interpretation of the feeling that something essential about the world and our lives will always stay hidden and out of reach, detaining us from the world of gods. ■ Jaakko Rustanius

The Changdong National Art Studio run by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea (Director: Soonhoon BAE) will open a return exhibition for the artist Kim Jungjoo called "Transparent Walls" from November 13th to the 19th.During her residency at the Changdong National Art Studio, Ms. Kim was selected by the International Residency Exchange Program to visit Finland's HIAP (Helsinki International Artist-in-residence Program) for three months starting from August 2009. The fruits of her efforts will be presented at this exhibition scheduled to be held at the Changdong National Art Studio gallery. ● Kim Jungjoo graduated from Kyungwon University's Department of Environmental Sculpture and since her graduation she has opened two solo shows and has been a part of a number of collective exhibitions with her staple-integrated installations. Ms. Kim constructs modern spaces with cool, silver staples and then reproduces these spaces through photography to create her "The City" and "Magic Land" series that demonstrate an excellent combination of materials and themes. Ms. Kim also draws and uses her drawings to create her "Cell" series, high-density works made from a combination of architectural and geometrical elements. They are also a culmination of the artist's extensive research into spatial dimensions. ● Ms. Kim continued to exhibit art based on photographic images until now.
