Threshold Value

영국 리즈 메트로폴리탄 대학교의 랜드스케이프 아키텍쳐 대학은 자연공간에서 작업 하고 있는 한국의 김해심 작가를 초대하여 개인전을 열고 있다. 이 전시는2009년 9월에 신축 개관한 리즈 대학교 예술사회학부 빌딩 전시장의 오픈을 기념하는 첫번째 전시로 작가가 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 진행해 온 다양한 프로젝트의 과정과 결과물을 사진기록으로 보여줌과 동시에 작가가 최근에 탐구하고 있는 '문턱값'을 제시하고 있다.

'문턱값'은 한 개체가 외부환경에 반응하는데 필요한 최소한의 자극의 크기를 의미한다. 김해심은 이 전시를 크게 세 부분으로 구성하여 '역치'의 개념에 대한 작가의 해석을 제공하고 있다. 첫번째는, 야외공간에서 실행한 18개의 프로젝트를 사진기록으로 실내공간에 가져오는 것이며 밖에서 안으로의 이입이다. 두번째는, 사람들이 밖에서 안으로 들거나 날 때 통과하는 보이지 않는 경계를 제시하는 것인데 세 개의 흙 구조물을 빌딩의 출입문과 빌딩의 안밖에 설치하였다. 세번째는, 세 가지의 다른 주제로 구성된 비디오 작품이며 물질에서 정신으로, 육체에서 마음으로, 자연에서 예술로 향하는 문턱값을 보여준다. 이 세 개의 비디오 작품은 모두 명상적인 행동을 통해 우리자신을 내면의 자아로 연결해 주고 있다.

Threshold Value ● 'Threshold Value' is the first point at which the internal self is stimulated by the external world. Haesim Kim gives her interpretation of the threshold value within this exhibition in three different media. Firstly, exhibiting a retrospective of her outdoor installation inside the gallery space through photography. Secondly, an installation in the doorway of the building made from three blocks of clay earth indicating an invisible boundary from the outside to the indoor space. Thirdly, three pieces of video work demonstrate this threshold value through the connection of the material world to the spiritual, body to mind, nature to art. All of which links us to our inner self through meditative acts. ● The Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design, Leeds Metropolitan University invited Haesim Kim to exhibit. This included her past work and her current exploratory work called 'Threshold Value'. This is the first exhibition within this new iconic University building of Broadcasting Place. The Landscape Resource Centre based in campus outside the city, hosted and assisted the construction of Haesim's three piece installation which took place a week prior to her exhibition. As part of the installation making, Haesim held a workshop with post graduate Landscape Architecture students. ● Since 1986 she has 23 years of practice as an environmental artist and participated over 80 commissions and residences, symposiums and exhibitions throughout Korea, Japan, Thailand, Germany, Austria, England, Romania, Sweden and Poland. Haesim Kim graduated MA Fine Art in Chelsea College of Art & Design in London. She lives and works in Seongnam near Seoul in Korea and is a member of the Nature Artist Association YATOO. ■ LMU Art
