나는 좀비와 함께 걸었다

GALLERY P L A N T에서는 두 번째 전시로 김소연의「나는 좀비와 함께 걸었다 I walked with a zombie」를 소개한다. 1943년도 흑백영화의 제목에서 가져온 이번 전시는 죽은 듯하나 살아서 움직이는 좀비와 같이 그 끝이 언제일지 명확하지 않고, 언제 어디서 갑자기 나타날지 전혀 예측할 수 없는 어떠한 상황들에 대해서 말하고 있다. ● 김소연은 인터넷과 TV 등에서 쏟아져 나오는 전 세계 사람들의 이목을 끄는 사건들에 대한 이미지들을 조합하고 거기에 약간의 소품을 등장시키는 방식을 통해 그 동안 끔찍하다고 여겼던 이미지를 언제부턴가 무심한 표정으로 바라보고 있는 우리들을 비추어 냈었다.

이번 전시는 김소연에 의해 선택되었던 이미지들의 좀 더 근본적인 출처를 묻고 그로 인한 현재를 이야기한다. 글로벌 스탠다드라는 슬로건 아래 행해지는 세계화 작업에 동조 하지 않겠다는 의지를 폭력과 죽음의 메시지로 전달하고 있는 테러리즘은 911 사건 이후 우리의 일상에서 구체적으로 드러나고 있다. 국가와 국가 간의 전쟁이 불러오는 역사 속의 먼 죽음이 아니라 세계인이라면 누구나 주말 해외여행 중 쇼핑센터 안에서, 혹은 호텔에 묵을 때 갑작스러운 죽임을 당할 수 있게 된 것이다. 이에 대한 최강국의 대응을 지켜보자. 대응최첨단 장비의 물량공세로 맞서고 있지만 그 끝이 보이지 않는 미국의 대처를 지켜보면서 딱히 별다른 해결방안이 없는 우리들은 불안감의 해소를 위해 점점 더 정보력에 집착하게 된다. 이에 대한 최강국 미국의 대응은 첨단 장비의 물량공세이지만 그 끝은 보이지 않고 그렇다고 딱히 별다른 해결방안이 없는 우리들로서는 불안감의 해소를 위해 점점 정보의 수집에 집착하게 된다. 그러나 정보력에 대한 욕구는 그저 습관화로 변질될 뿐 언제 끝날지 모르는 막막함에서 치밀어 오르는 공포심을 덜어내는 것에는 전혀 도움이 안 되는 것처럼 보인다.

"…테러는 끝이 없다. 자살이라는 비싼 대가를 치르기 때문이다. 타자가 이미 죽음을 선택했고 떠맡았기 때문에 우리는 테러리스트를 사라지게 할 수 없다. 사실상 그는 이미 사라졌기 때문이다.."(장 보드리야르) 회복이 불가능할 것 같은 지루한 상황을 살아가면서 어느덧 개인적인 안온함과 자극을 바라는 심리로 세계화 논리를 격려하고 있는 우리들은 살아있으면서도 죽은 상태, 말하자면 '숨쉬는 죽음의' 카니발에 참여하고 있는 것이다. 작가의 작업에서 불쑥 불쑥 모습을 드러내는 현실은 앞서 언급한 습관적인 정보수집의 일환이며 어쩔 수 없는 무기력함을 반영하고 있다. 고문당하는 코피 흘리는 남자와 부시 행정부에서 국무부 장관을 지냈던 콘돌리자 라이스의 얼굴은 어둠 속을 걷는 군인과 그 뒤를 쫓는 좀비의 모습과 뒤섞여 현실과 악몽의 흐릿한 경계를 구성한다. ● 우리는 좀비와 함께 걷고 있다. ● 어지러움을 느끼며 몽롱한 기운이 지속되는 가운데 의무적으로 물리적 시간에 조응해가면서 그냥 그렇게 걷는다. 무언가를 분명한 무언가로 만들어 내는 것이 무의미해 보이는 시대에서는 어떠한 비판도, 어설픈 실천도 더 이상 흥미롭지가 않다. 여기에는 음악도 없고 우스운 이야기도 찾아볼 수 없다. 단지 서로 뒤섞여 새 삶을 살아간다. ■ 갤러리 플랜트

Gallery P L A N T is proud to present Kim Soyeon's "I walked with a zombie"as its second exhibition. The exhibition's title is taken from an eponymous black-and-white 1943 film, and refers to situations whose end is uncertain and which suddenly come upon us at any time, in any place, with utter unpredictably – like zombies, which are seemingly dead but live on and carry on moving. ● Kim Soyeon prepares images of events that jump out from the Internet and TV and grab the world's attention, introducing small additional elements to them. She uses this method to draw attention to the way we, from a certain moment, start regarding with indifference the images that once appalled us. ● This exhibition questions the fundamental origins of the images chosen by Kim, and speaks of the reality they bring about. Terrorism, which conveys through violence and death its refusal to go along with the project of globalization that proceeds under the mantra of global standards, has been a concrete part of our everyday lives since the events of September 11, 2001. Now, unlike the historical pattern of faraway death in the course of wars between states, any global citizen can be suddenly killed while on holiday abroad, in a department store or hotel. How has the world's superpower reacted to this? When we look at the response of the United States, which has employed cutting-edge equipment and overwhelming force but is still nowhere near achieving its aims, we gradually cling more to the power of information to alleviate our unease. But our desire for information merely deteriorates into a habit and appears to be of no help whatsoever when it comes to relieving the fear that wells up at the daunting thought that we do not know when all this will end. Living through these tiresome, seemingly irrevocable circumstances, while cheering on the logic of globalization in the hope of finding our way to personal peace, we are at once alive and dead, taking part in a carnival of "breathing death". ● We are walking with zombies. ● Feeling dizzy and maintaining an indistinct form of energy, we simply walk on in enforced accordance with physical time. In an era when making something into something into something clear seems meaningless, no criticism, no clumsy conversion to practical action is of interest any longer. Here, we find no music or funny stories. We simply mingle together and live our new lives. ■ GALLERY P L A N T
