Gallery P L A N T는 첫 번째 전시로 정서영의「괴물의 지도, 15분」을 선보인다. ● 2008년 광주 비엔날레에서 벽과 바닥에 먹지를 이용하여 복사한 드로잉과 텍스트로 이미 선보인 바 있는「괴물의 지도, 15분」은 이번 전시에서 드로잉 원본들과 새롭게 추가된 오브제들이 함께 전시된다.

일상적인 사물 혹은 하나의 현상 그 자체를 차용하면서 조각, 먹지 드로잉, 텍스트 드로잉을 통해 펼쳐지는 정서영의 미술언어는 보는 이로 하여금 여러 가지의 움직임, 즉 갖은 추측과 오해, 발견, 기억 등을 불러일으킨다. 정서영의 드로잉은 조각을 만들기 위한 설계도나 메모가 아닌 이미 만들어 놓은 조각에서 새로운 관점을 발견하는 작업이기도 하며 사물에 대한, 그리고 사람이 갖고 있는 현실의 조건에 대한 기억이 무화 되는 순간을 기록한 것이기도 하다.

이번 전시「괴물의 지도, 15분」은 괴물의 이야기가 아니라 '괴물의 지도'에 관한 작업으로, 정서영이 단 15분간 작업실 주변을 고개를 숙이고 걸으며 보았던 것들을 마음대로 편집하거나 과장하고, 때로는 그것들에 호응하면서 그려낸 드로잉들이다. 정서영의 작업에서 '괴물' 은 등장하지 않으며 '지도'의 형상도 보이지 않는다. "현실에 늘 출몰하는 비현실"이 '방향'과 '영역'이라는 구체성을 만들어낸다는 생각이 "괴물의 지도"를 만들어낸 것이다. 정서영이 이 작업을 진행하는 과정은 체계를 알 수 없는 지도를 따라가는 것이었으며, 그녀의 작업을 따라가는 우리 역시 그 좌표에 따라 위치 지워지지만 언제나 그러했듯이 그곳에 대입할 수 있는 기존의 요소란 존재하지 않는다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. ■ 갤러리 플랜트

Gallery P L A N T is pleased to present, as its first exhibition, Monster map, 15min. by Chung Seoyoung. ● Along with the texts and drawings that were transferred with carbon paper to the walls and the floor in the 2008 Gwangju Biennale, a new version of Monster map, 15min. in this exhibition includes the original drawings and new objects. ● Appropriating an everyday object or a phenomenon, Chung''s artistic language shown through sculptures, carbon paper drawings and text drawings evokes your mind fromjn all kinds of mental movements such as countless conjectures, misunderstandings, discoveries, memories and so on. In this sense, these drawings are neither a draft nor a memo: they are not only an attempt to find a new perspective in the already-finished sculptures but also a record of the moment when the memory of the actual condition of a thing or a man suddenly comes to nothing. ● The new version of Monster map, 15min. is not a story of the monster but about the 'monster map' drawings and sculptures made by freely editing, exaggerating, or sometimes responding to what the artist saw during walking around her studio with her head down for only fifteen minutes. There appears neither a 'monster' nor the image of 'map' in the work. It is the idea that "the unreality haunting the reality" creates the concreteness of 'direction' and 'territory' that brought forth to the "monster map." The process of producing this work was like following a map whose system is unknown, and we ourselves, who are following her work, are located in the coordinates, only to find no existing element exactly corresponds to these coordinate points. ■ GALLERY PLANT
