부산국제비디오페스티발

부산국제비디오 페스티발이 6회를 맞습니다. 지역에서 상대적으로 미약한 영상미술에 대한 관심과 영상작가지원 그리고 영상미술의 저변확산과 관심을 위해, 비영리 예술단체인 대안공간 반디에 의해 2004년부터 부산비디오 페스티발이 시작되었습니다. 부산은 부산국제영화제(PIFF)로 인해 영화의 도시로 불리기도 하고 부산비엔날레를 개최하는 도시이기도 합니다. 하지만 미술 분야 작가들의 활동여건은 항상 어려웠으며 특히 영상미술 분야는 그 저변과 교육 환경 등이 열악하고 미술계의 관심 또한 미약합니다. 이러한 지역미술내부에서 상대적으로 소외되어 있는 영상미술에 대한 재인식과 관심을 위해 그리고 동시대 영상미술의 흐름을 파악하기 위해 해외의 젊은 비디오작가들과 국내 영상작가들의 작품을 선정하여 소개해왔습니다. ● 올해 국내 공모를 통해 50여 편의 작품이 지원되었고 경쟁작(대상 1점과 선정작 8점)이 가려졌습니다. 작년의 경우 기술적 완성도는 떨어지지만 신선하고 재미있는 작업들이 많았다면 올해는 기술적 완성도는 이전에 비해 나아졌으며 대부분 작품들 역시 진지한 편이었습니다. 개인의 정체성에 대한 고민을 담아내는 작업들과 함께 이민이나 이산의 기억을 담아내는 작업들도 눈에 띄는 부분이었습니다. 또한 비디오라는 매체에 대한 고민을 반영하는 작업들도 크게 늘었으며 영화, 게임 등 대중문화 장르와 연계성을 갖는 작업들도 있었습니다. 달리 말해, 비디오로 작업의 주제와 의식 자체가 몇 가지로 묶을 수 없을 정도로 다양했다는 사실입니다. ● 올해 특기할만한 점은 부산지역 거주 작가들의 지원이 현저하게 줄어든 데에 비해 타 지역과 해외에 거주하는 분들의 지원이 늘었다는 점이었습니다. 이는 부산 지역 미술대학에서 영상미술에 대한 이해나 관심이 여전히 부족한 상황을 반증하는 일이며, 영상미술을 자신의 작업으로 채택하는 작가가 생산될 수 있는 기반 역시 취약하다는 것을 뜻합니다. 한편으로 비디오 작업이 재생산되고 유통할 수 있는 기반이 거의 없다는 사실을 새삼 확인하게 된 결과로 받아들이게 만들기도 했습니다.

해외작은 부산국제비디오 페스티발 조직위원회가 직접 선정한 작품들과 몇 몇 커미셔너가 추천한 작품들이 상영됩니다. 해외작은 마카오, 터키, 미국, 리투아니아, 러시아, 중국, 캐나다, 스위스, 스웨덴, 덴마크, 이탈리아, 일본의 영상작가들의 19작품이 상영됩니다. 그리고 여성 비디오 작가들의 정체성, 젠더, 히스테리 등을 주제로 한 4개의 작품, Hey Bud(Julie Zando), I'm Not The Girl Who Misses Much(Pipilotti rist), Permutations(Theresa Hak Kyung Cha), Head(Cheryl Donegan)이 특별상영 될 예정입니다. ● 해외작품 작품추천에 도움을 주신 신보슬(토탈 미술관 큐레이터), 프랭크 리(마카오, 옥스하우스 디렉터), 정만영(미디어 아티스트), 오픈 스페이스 배 등 해외 커미셔너 역할을 해주신 분들과 공간, 작품을 심사해주신 강선주(부산시립미술관 학예사), 김만석(미술평론가)님, 심준섭(미디어 작가), 그리고 상영을 위해 도움 주신 데자뷰 영상의 이광기 작가님, 번역을 해주신 추명지님께 감사를 드립니다. 그리고 세미나를 위해 기꺼이 원고를 써주시고 발제를 해주신 박만우(독립 큐레이터), 김만석(미술 평론가), 두 분께도 감사드립니다. 또한 아쉽게도 상영되지 못한 작가들에게 죄송한 말씀을 전하며 내년 페스티발에서 꼭 만나기를 기대하며 앞으로도 많은 관심과 지원 부탁드립니다. 더불어 부산시의 지원, 파라다이스 문화재단 및 개막 상영의 시설과 공간지원과 같은 후원을 해주시는 시청자미디어센터 관계자 분들께도 감사드리며 다양한 장르의 발전과 함께 국제 네트워크 형성에 많은 도움이 되었다는 말씀을 드립니다. ■ 신양희

Welcome to 6th Busan International Video Festival. Initiated in 2004 by non-profit art organization Space Bandee, the exhibition was held to expand interests on the field of video art and to support its artists. Busan is identified as the city of film due to Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) as well as Pusan Biennale. However, working conditions for the artists were always poor, especially in field of video art with inferior base and educational environment along with lack of interest from world of art. ● We have been introducing works of young foreign video artists and Korean artistst ogaininterests, to encouragereper ception, and tounderst and the flow of contemporaryfield of videoart, which is relativelyneglectedintheregion. ● In this year, there's the works more than 50 were participated to the domestic competition, and finally total 8 competitive works were selected. In the case of last year, although the completion standards of the works were relatively low, many fresh and enjoyable works were introduced. On the other hand, the selected works in this year are high completed in its technique and have more serious point of views in its contents than before. It is the prominent point that the works about the speculation about individual identities, immigration and dispersed are including. Moreover, the works deals with the thought about video work of itself have been increased and pop culture like movie, game seems another significant theme also.So to speak, the diverse themes in video work are appeared even cannot be categorized. ● However, the most remarkable matter in this show is that the participants to the competition in Busan decreased remarkably, on the other hand, from other areas in domestic and abroad increased. It is the clear proof that interest and understanding of video art in Fine Art College in Busan region is still in lack as used to be and the base of video art is inferior. Furthermore, it is also the opportunity to confirm the true that the formation of the base of reproduction and distribution for video art is almost not completed yet. ● Foreign works were selected by Busan International Organization Committee and nominated works by commissioners will be put on the screen. They are total 19 works from different countries including Macau, Turkey, American, African-American, Russia, China, Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, Italian and Japan. And there is special projection of 4 women artists' works dealt with identity, gender and hysteria, Hey Bud(Julie Zando), I'm Not The Girl Who Misses Much(Pipilotti rist), Permutations(Theresa Hak Kyung Cha), Head(Cheryl Donegan). ● WethankcuratorBo-seulShinoftotalmuseum,directorFrankLeeof, Artist Man-young Jung and Open Space Bae for the nomination of foreign works and Seon-ju Kang of Busan Museum of Art, art critic Man-seok Kim and Jun-seob Shim for the judge and Kyang-Ki Lee of Dejavu Pictures for the support and Myung-ji Chu for the translation, as well as art critic Man-seok, independent curator Manu Park for the writing and lecture. We also would like to show our gratitude and regrets to every artists participated in competition, and we hope to see your consistent interests and supports toward the festival. With the technical and spatial supports of Community Media Center and the city of Busan, we were able to develop diverse genre of art while successfully establishing the global network.
