7 FILMS: Slightly Fantastikal [Vol.1]

이 작업은 7개의 필름 연작 중 첫번째 것인데 이것은 도시적 환경에 초점을 맞춘 2개의 짦은 시퀸스들과 함께 5명의 인물들의 삶이 서로 연결되어 있는 비디오 컬렉션이다. 인물들의 삶에서 '실제 상황들'로서 촬영된 음향과 시각적 자료들을 구성해 나감으로 인해 이 작업은 재구축/재구성/시간 안에서 무상한 순간의 추출이 되는 것이다. 이미지와 사운드를 수정하면서, 연결점들은 작가가 대상들을(그들의 특징, 성격, 삶의 접근방식) 관찰한 것과 기록되어진 것 사이에서 이끌려 진다. 그 결과 작업은 인생의 예상치 못한 측면들을 들어내게 된다. 종종 환상적인 느낌과 가상적 이미지의 순간을 통해 작가는 현실로서 지각된 것과 가공의 것으로 믿어졌던 것 사이의 애매함과 모순을 쉴 새 없이 교정한다. ● 켑쳐 된 이미지와 사운드를 변형시키는 과정에서, 작가와 그녀의 대상들은 도시라고 부르는 놀랍게도 인간이 만들어낸 환경에 의해 포함된다. 물리적 구조와 사회적 규범과 형식이 강하게 연계되어져 있는 도시는 끊임없는 기계적 소음과 함께, 작가에게 각각의 대상을 관찰함으로 관계성을 제공하는 것이다. 인물들은 그들의 삶을 물리적이고 정신적인 그물망을 통해 펼치고 있는 동시대의 도시인들이다. 인물들의 삶을 다양한 층위에서 구성하면서 작가는 강박적이고 독점적이며 고립된, 혹은 욕망하는 강제된, 도시가 그 모든 것들은 잘 나타내고 있는 그와 같은 정신의 상태를 발견한다. 인물들 사이와 그 안에서 연결점들의 발견은 7개의 필름의 개념적이고 미학적인 구조를 창조해내었다. 이렇게 하여 작가는 내러티브 필름과 다큐멘터리 그리고 메시지를 전달하는 방식에 대한 전통적인 사고에 도전한다. ■ 양소영

This work is the first volume of the 7 FILMS series, a collection of interlocking videos about the lives of five human characters, along with two shorter sequences set in an urban environment. Built out of audio and visual materials filmed as "real situations" in the characters' lives, this work is a reconstruction / reconfiguration / extraction of transitory moments in time. In modifying the images and sounds, connections are drawn between the author's observations of the subjects [of their characteristics / personality / approach to the living] and what was recorded, consequently the work comes to reveal an unexpected aspects of life. Often conveyed through the moments of fantastical feelings and illusory images, the author incessantly negotiates the ambiguities and ambivalences between what is perceived as actuality and what is believed to be imaginary. ● In the process of translating these captured images and sounds of the subjects, the author – along with her subjects – are contained by a startlingly man-made environment called the city. Intensely knitted with physical structures and social norms and rituals, the city, with its constant mechanical drone, is what provides the context for the author in observing each subject; the characters are contemporary city dwellers whose lives unfurl through these physical and psychological webs. The Author finds such states of mind as being obsessive, possessive, isolated or connected, desiring and driven, all of which the city represents so well, framing the characters' lives to varying degrees. Discovering this linkage between and within the characters created both the conceptual and aesthetic architecture of 7 FILMS. In this way, the author challenges the conventional notion of narrative films and documentary and their method of conveying messages. ■ YANGSOYOUNG
